This makes sense. The clue is the os 3.0 backward compatibility. So there'll be a thinner/lighter phone that's basically all the same features as the current iPhone 3g for $99 or $149 for 2 year AT&T, and then a beefer, faster, video-camera bearing iPhone HD starting at $299 w/ 2 year AT&T.

Wow, familiar? They do the exact same thing with iPods.

I wonder if they mean smaller screen too, or if they just killed the bezel and made it skinnier?

That was my first thought for the Media Pad rumor. If Apple made a version of the Verizon Hub, you know it'd probably actually sell. But even with Apple creating the device, I think the Media Pad would end up being like the Apple TV, merely a hobby. Unless this turns out to be the tablet/netbook device...

iPhone Lite? I don't know how much smaller you can make iPhone without harming usability. There's plenty of apps on the App Store. How many would stay compatible? I guess the defining features of the iPhone are the iPod, internet communications device, and phone in one device. With a system-on-chip, that sounds like the limitation. It'd be closer in capabilities to the regular iPods with a copy of Safari and phone abilities.

Hell yes, bring on the new Apple Tablet/Pad or whatever it's called.

Revenge of the Newton - Coming this summer to an Apple store near you!

And i certainly don't see Apple doing any "lite" version. That' just not there business model at all.

Famous last words. That's what nearly everyone said about the Mac Mini rumors. And Apple TV rumors. And rumors of the first iPhone. "They wouldn't do that. They've never done that before!"

Apple Media Pad = Great

Have to buy it with a Verizon 2 year contract = Bad

What's next? Have to buy a Mini or a MacBook with a contract or pay some outrageous price for it (c'mon, $599 for a no-contract iPhone?)

Can't wait to see what's coming this summer. Originally I plan to switch to AT&T from T-Mobile for a new iPhone, now THIS!

Verizon or AT&T, whichever has what I want will get my contract.

DIE IN A FIRE VERIZON!

I hope these deals do not solidify and AT&T becomes the carrier.

Damn so there are people who actually prefer AT&T to Verizon, who would have thought with all the complaining on this board about how useless AT&T is and great Verizon is.

Yeah. I already have an AT&T contract with my iPhone. So I'd have to get another contract with another carrier if I want the Media Pad? No thank you. And a "Media Pad" would have to do more than just be a bigger iPhone for me to have a real interest in it. Handwriting recognition for one. :)

Verizon sucks period. Horrible service and horrible CS.:mad::mad::mad:

God I hate them, hope they don't get anything! Be wise Apple! AT&T has a great relationship with you keep it!:mad::mad::mad:

Handwriting would be a given - a resurrection of the Newton.

Funny, Im the only one of my friends that get service in my friends basement, even in the tile walled bathroom. Im the only one with verizon.

Go figure.

Why a media pad?

The Iphone was a super cool web surfing Ipod. The touch was the Iphone sans the phone.

What the heck would a media player be?

The touch fits in your pocket, something with a 10" screen would not.

The Touch is reasonably priced.

A 10" pad would likely cost $500 for the base model.

I just don't see what a media pad would do that the touch didn't?

If it has a 3 G connection then its basically an oversized Iphone, if its wifi only then its an oversized Ipod touch.

What is the niche of this product?

I just can't see where the market for such a device would be.

Thus I am skeptical of such a device.

The only thing I expect to come out of Apple this summer is the 3rd gen Iphone.

Sounds like a rumor only. I'm sure Apple has learned the art of mis-direction, so their competitors don't really know what true or false themselves. Apple is about a one size fits all with the iPhone. They haven't catered hardware to any of their carriers thus far so why start with Verizon?

Verizon will get what everyone else will get - the iPhone G3 or G4. It costs too much to design multiple dualing handsets. Ask Apple's competitors about that. It's about the software anyway.

I'm pretty sure they are talking about something portable...

Also on Verizon, no issues with service/quality/coverage (except trying to use 3G during CES in Las Vegas - backhauls completely overloaded).

The only consistent cellphone issue that I have is trying to understand what people using Iphones are saying. The voice quality is usually abysmal from my Verizon phone (but Verizon to Verizon is like a good land line).

Either the Iphone or AT&T or both are really bad.

I completely agree with this because this gels with my line of thinking. For AT&T, there is a fallback network to rely on because they are upgrading as opposed to brand new installations for Verizon. So not only does Verizon have to obtain customer satisfaction with the 4G network soon, it also has to ensure that it is done in record time. My guess is that they will introduce in major cities on the coasts and some prominent cities in the rest of the country, get that feedback and push it out to the rest of US.

.........
now for AT&T this is basically software upgrades to the existing network and compatible hardware. For vzw on the other hand it's a complete conversion from cdma to gsm technology which LTE is, if anyone here remembers when AT&T/Cingular made to conversion to GSM from tdma, it was a mess. And realistically vzw will not be able to completely quickly and smoothly, to convert their coverage they have will take atleast a year for the build out, and that is extremely optimistic. I wouldn't doubt vxw will launch big markets first and over a year or two complete the rest of their coverage. so 2011 to 2012 before verizon is completely 4G, would apple even launch a phone that only certain vzw customers could use?

Reg. iPhone Lite, I dont doubt that Apple has considered developing devices that can offer better functionality while maintaining the roughly same size but only offering high-definition videos over the current models? Nah, I dont think that the iPhone Lite is possible. It has to do other things more than the current functionality.

Reg. the media pad, that seems likely but what will it contain/be used for? My assumption is not the current mobile OS running apps for PMP but something truly unique and different (using a modified Snow Leopard) that somehow links iTunes. In other words, a niche product that fills the space between the PMPs and laptops but does something so radical and simple that we would be left scratching our heads again :)

Yea the only real qualm i have is the voice clarity isnt the greatest, but its deffinatly not garbage.

im gona vouch for AT&T here. (central california) in my city, i get 3G service everywhere where some some people on verizon can barely a couple bars while trying to use EVDO.

sure the iPhone's voice quality isnt great, but the actual service.. both bars and customer service are great here. There are some wonderful people working for AT&T or I just get lucky.

but either way im getting that tablet if it comes out.
