It's not about forcing them to spend more. The 40 for the same price as the current 20 sounds good, until you realize that most people don't even need 20. When they realize that it's way more than they need and look at the next cheapest and see that it's 4GB (which is not enough), they'll look to other brands that offer what they want. Apple popularity and RDF aside, people buy what they need, and Apple would be creating a gaping hole in its product line.

It's sort of like those huge gas station soda cups. The small one is only ten cents less than the 40 ounce one, which is only 10 cents less than the half gallon one. A 20 ounce bottle is the same price as the 40 ounce fountain drink, but it doesn't matter if you don't WANT the 40 ounce one because you can't ever hope to finish it and end up not consuming 60% of what's in it. Bigger is not always better, but most Americans don't accept this as valid.

I don't know...I agree that bigger is not always better, but I just don't see mp3 player capacity in the same light as soda cups...

If Apple's competitors are selling 20 GB models for approximately the same price as Apple is selling a 40 GB, I just don't see people choosing the competitor becasue 'that's all I need'...

BTO Options across the entire PowerMac G5 line bump the shipping to 7-10 Business Days

BTO on the Powerbooks - 15 &17in...1-2 Weeks
12in is at 1-3 days.

BTO iMac - 5-7 days

Everything else seems normal.

From the looks of things, we will most certainly see a revision to the Powerbooks this week. I think we will see Powermac revisions no later than next week.

iMac shipping may just be a fluke.

Actually, only the 15 super is on 1-2 weeks. The 17 is one a few days, when BTO.

However, that 1-2 weeks on the 15 super makes me think the Powerbook updates might be one or two weeks away. The Powermac shipping dates, being shorter, 5-7 days, makes me think it would happen first.

In regards to a smaller update (like the Powerbook), I wonder if it could come on Tuesday morning. There have been many times when updates happened before the financial results (which will be late Tuesday). Something small like a Powerbook bump might not be suited for the Wednesday event, so happen the day before? Of course, this is assuming my other suggestion that the Powerbook won't be updated this week is incorrect. :)

802.11n hasn't been ratified yet, and isn't even close to being there. At best they could release pre-n products, but it probably makes more sense to just wait till next year.

dude, apple put out 802.11G pbooks before it was official, remember?

I think the cool thing about a new iPod won't be the larger capacities (although that will be there), but what they'll be banking on to add sales is the new design. Smaller, and a little cooler.

In regards to a Madonna (pink) iPod Nano, I say fine. If it gets some added sales, that wouldn't have been there, great. I think it would be better, if they could get a couple hundred artists to choose from, and then his or her autograph was engraved on the back, and you got a coupon towards that respective artist's music collection.

pink ipods certainly sell. my girlfriend's initial reaction when I showed her the nano was "they don't make pink ones anymore? Glad I got mine when I did."

Are you kidding me? We like to buy Double Jumbo Mambo Gulps at 7-11, drive huge SUV's with 3rd row seating, Super Biggie Extra size our fast food, and buy industrial barrels of Jiffy peanut butter at Costco.

20GB mp3 players are for wussy Frenchmen!!!! ;)

Seriously though, Apple wants to maintain its price points for the different models (as long as is reasonably possible.) I agree 20GB is already more than most people need, which is why Apple will also evolve the line and gradually add new features when they make sense (hint video!!) These are value-added features in addition to the extra storage, they're aren't meant to rock the free world or anything.

$299 for a 40GB that is thinner than previous versions, and can possibly output video to a TV, AND it comes in black. Come on, you know you want one! ;)

It will look great next to the 'other players' which cost $250 and have 20GB storage, and only play music. And don't have the iconic clickwheel as well as Steve's blessings...

EDIT- I do agree with your point about a possible 'hole' in the iPod lineup. To be honest 4GB is enough for most people (everyone was scooping up the 1G Mini's too), but I would like to see an 8GB 'Return of the Mini' at $249. The price overlap with the Nano is okay because you get to pick size or capacity. Everyone wins!

You need to start looking towards the sky and contemplate what the heavens may sing back to you. This will take Serious thought beyond what these postings have offered.

Again, please don't ask me to respond. Just know a few of you will be very happy with what is about to happen with your iPods.

So does this guy have actual inside dirt, or is he speculating like everyone else? I can't ask him directly to respond to my question...

All this talk of cannibalizing nano sales should stop right now. It's not 'cannibalizing' sales when your customer buys a more expensive model instead, it's called 'upselling'... ;)

It's like saying Apple shouldn't come out with a killer PowerMac, it might cannibalize Mini sales.

anybody remember how apple was talking with the sat. radio peeps a while back? what if that's what this is?

I think by serious he's referring to "sirrius" and by "look to the sky" he's referring to satellites...

2+2= sattelite radio on new iPods, which sounds like a total waste of space to me.

You're right there. I wouldn't either. It's just that competitors already have 20GB models for cheaper than the matching iPod, and the elimination of a sensible capacity could be what drives people to them because they could save 50-70 dollars and get what they need, rather than pay Apple premiums for more than they want.

But of course I'd like to see the $299 iPod be 40GB and thin! :) I just don't want them to off the 20GB to make it happen. The nano should come in a higher capacity, or there should be a 20GB at a new, lower price ($279? $269?) to keep those customers who already think 20 gigs is overkill for their needs and don't want anything bigger. For those of us who can never have enough, keep the high end going! (the thought of 100GB iPods make me drool.)

Yeah, that seems to be what he's pointing at (although I like someone's GodPod idea.) But I'd like to know if he's conjured up this inevitable outcome in his head, or he actually had info leaked to him.

If Apple doesn't even want to stick in an FM tuner, I'm not so sure they care about satellite radio. It would be interesting to know what percentage of people would actually subscribe to the service.

I'm also very doubtful that they could include satellite radio tuner and hardware and come out with a thinner iPod. Not that I know how much hardware is required. Also, would it necessitate an external antenna (for good reception)?

EDIT- That Sirius S50 looks pretty hot. It can record and timeshift content, and you can play mp3s on it. If Apple isn't doing anything with them now, they will need to keep an eye on them. I suspect the reason they haven't jumped aboard yet is the extra cost of hardware for a feature not everyone will use. I don't know if they could stick in Sirius in the $299 iPod, and keep the price.

BTW- everyones' talking about Sirius, what about XM?

I think its just one of those people 'predicting' that the iPod will be exactly what they want.

edit: and yes I completely agree with you, on every point.

This is true but, it depends on how close they are to a specification. From what I understand they aren't yet close enough to make any real products because until this week there were two seperate camps. Now there is a third group that is attempting to unify the design. This group seems quite large and should be successful due to the number of companies backing it and the fact that the big players are behind it. I don't think a draft spec even exists and so there's no way anybody could tell what 802.11n will look like exactly. Though I would imagine those companies have a pretty good idea of what it will look like, these developments seem far too recent to be able to come up with any kind of products outside of a lab yet.

sorry if i missed this anywhere else, but is this thing gonna be webcast??

Its at a cosy 5-6pm for us england folk, will make fantastic tea time viewing :)

I hope they get recycled instead of going to the dump. :)

Video on a small device has a very, very, very limited audience.
  1. People will not wait for the huge file to download.
  2. People will not watch the small screen.
  3. People would much rather go get a DVD, order from Pay-per-view, or use OnDemand before waiting 30 minutes - 1 hour to get the content.
  4. If this is for music videos or small clips, people will either turn on the TV or surf the web.
  5. The Video iPod will not happen, period.
  6. I heard you were on with the nano. I don't think you'll be right on video. If you are, I'll apologize and bow out. I'm not saying satellite is going happen. it just should.

No need to bow out. Hundreds of us are going to be right and hundreds wrong about what is coming. I will gladly post my d'khead avatar if there is no Video iPod (prepared just in case).

Wouldn't it confuse us if all of the possibilities discussed became available.

Pink, quad dual-core, satellite ready, G5 video iPod with a complete Barry Manilow music-video library. $299 while supplies last.

Firstly, I don't think it'll be some sort of Sirius iPod. Remember, other countries don't have sat. radio. I can't see them introducing a product that is useless around the world..

I think a madonna edition ipod could actually be likely - especially if it's pink and has all of her songs (not the silly voucher system like the U2 Box set)

and if it is a madonna ipod, perhaps we'll get a live performance? ;)

(edit: excuse my madonna-ness, i think i've just been hanging out at the kabbalah center for too long  )

So podfuture, do you work in an iPod factory in China? or do your friends?

Are they breaching NDAs or anything?

No on the factory job. No on getting any news from folks with NDAs (that would really be daring).

Seems that folks without NDAs are seeing iPods about a month before the market intro. Of course they brag about being one of the first. Nope, I have NOT seen a video iPod and never said so.

This is all getting kinda silly considering the hundreds of posts with predictions in all directions. Think I'll hang up my keyboard for the remainder. Just one more thing.... ANYTHING could happen.

3 am, USA central. No music store update. Usually this is a sign of an update on the way.

Well, it's gonna be a log day and a half. At least we get conference call tomorrow.

No, apple have not done live webcasts, for some time now. However, they usually get a delayed version available, at Apple.com, 5-10 hours, after the event.

A JTHM (a comic) black iPod nano SE-after all Jhonen Vasquez (did create Invader Zim), directed the Shut Me Up music video for Mindless Self Indulgence (I found the song and their music on the iTMS-but no video offered there, they could have a iPod SE or maybe Green Day, Franz Fernindad or Black Eyed Peas deserves one too.)

Not likely, in my opinion.

Madonna, though is most likely as she appeared via iChat at the last media event and the iTMS has her music on it.
