This talk of satellite radio in the iPod is ridiculous. You people realize that you must have line-of-sight to use anything satellite, right? True, XM and Sirius both have terrestrial repeaters but only in major cities. I think handheld satellite radio receivers are a usability nightmare (can't keep them in your pocket unless you use the special antenna-embedded headphones, or use them inside unless you have a terrestrial repeater in your area or keep it near a window). Too many variables here which is so not Apple. It won't happen.

Bluetooth won't happen either because the data rate is too slow.

Do you think Apple is likely to release an entirely new product before the introduction of x86?
Wouldn't that be a big waste of both money and time considering that they would have to redesign the contraption at the time of PPC -> x86 transition?
Just a thought... My guess is just as good as yours

What I wonder is why it couldn't run on Intel already?

They've had the software in the works for years behind the scenes, they've supposedly had a tablet in the works for a while as well, why not release it now to bridge the gap in the rest of the line getting Intel?

As far as running the major applications, maybe its not designed to do that. Maybe it runs special versions of Mail, Safari, iTunes, Pages, iCal, iChat etc. and thats all it runs. Would the tablet consumer need more than all the basic OS X functions? Its just like a PDA with a big screen. You can't run many other big apps on PDAs besides Word & Powerpoint readers and stuff, and Apple already has those in all its in-house apps.

Could this be so far off base, or am I missing something about the transition that could not be covered in this situation?

OMG New Headless iMac!!

Here it is guys, the new headless iMac. Reputedly called the John Travolta/Nicholas Cage iMac Special Edition it has all the specs of the current 20" iMac but without a screen.

Comes only in white but included in the box is a two disc special release of Face/Off.

Well now that we've had six days to blow things completely out of proportion here's my prediction:

Today Jobs will talk via the conference call about how great Apple's doing .At the end of this call he will say they're introducing some nice upgrades to the PB line, perhaps even the dual Freescale 7448 17in. PB.The 15in and 17in. will both have HD screens.12in. will be dropped.
Some speed bumps for the PowerMac line :
Dual 2.3 will be bottom line
Dual core PPC 970MP will be the top line. Dual 2.0 will be dropped.
End call...

Tomorrow : One More Thing..
iPod Video and iPod Nano Pink Madonna special edition..

Thats it folks..See ya next year when the first Mactels come out.
Happy Holidays!

What Time?

What time is the conference call for Financial Updates & Smoke? Anyone know? Of all the things I have read on here the last week, this posting above is the most feasible and sensible. I am curious about the time of the call and content. I would then think we will see (if the above is true) an update to the website this afternoon, and new PB line by this evening.

It's always updated on Tuesday mornings by this time. hmmmmmmm.... ;)

iTunes 5.1? Seems awful soon after a major iTunes release. The store can already handle PDFs and video, so I think we might just see new content. Plus, there's no major MAJOR album releases today. If there's a big content announcement, it's going to be catalog (Radiohead!!) or video (Zoolander!!).

But it's Apple, so who knows.

Sigh... that is 1:00 p.m. for us Central Time Zone people... oh well could be worse.. could be on Eastern Time haha!

Not to nit-pick, but for us Central Time Zoners, its actually noon, if there is a 10am release... two hour diff...mnt, and pacific.

All this talk of cannibalizing nano sales should stop right now. It's not 'cannibalizing' sales when your customer buys a more expensive model instead, it's called 'upselling'... ;)

It's like saying Apple shouldn't come out with a killer PowerMac, it might cannibalize Mini sales.

I generally agree, but it depends on margin. According to some of the analysist reports, Apple is getting a ginormous margin on the nano right now compared with other models, so the company would only have an incentive to roll out a new iPod before Christmas if it's a different enough product not to cut into nano's marketshare or has the same margin-per-unit numbers as the nano.

Hey MacRumors, how about some moderation here?! And Stridey, how about calling on the name you serve....

Christians in the forum, like myself, take offense to your rude dismissal of our Savior's name. This is a public forum, not your personal blog for blasphemy.

It is perfectly reasonable to assume that they wouldn't even bother doing it until the intel macs but I think most of the problems associated with the transition (new motherboard, processor, etc) would probably be independent of problems associated with a tablet (stylus doesn't work, screen not sensitive enough, screen latch breaks too easily). Transition problems for a tablet would almost be the same as with a powerbook because most of the parts are the same. You could definitely be right though.

Basically what I'm saying is that debuting the tablet now could be a way of reducing the amount of things that go wrong since they ppc platform has all it's kinks worked out.
Steve did say at the Intel announcement that there were still great PPC items in the pipeline. ;)

Seriously room. This forum has some pretty bad language in it. How about growing up a bit and respecting the Christians in the room. ????

imirror

anybody thought about apple having a product focusing a new target group - the ladies...a pink tablet device, size of a pda, built-in isight - fits in the ladie's bag and just works as a mirror...no music, no video, no apps, no osxlight, no nothing but showing the cam image...but it will look sooo cute...of course presented by madonna
after spending 6 months of reading nearly every single thread in this forum this was my poorly first post...

Riiiiiighhhhhht.....

Anyway, back to the topic....

Obviously there are no morning updates today - tomorrow morning's financial report should be very interesting but I don't see them releasing anything at it. Who knows I may be wrong, I'm still tasting humble pie on the Mighty Mouse.

As for "one more thing...." I'm not going to be splitting hairs on the connotations of "one more thing" and so I think it'll be like a very small MWSF style keynote - rehashing stuff from the financial conference then some product releases.

I was certain on the Video iPod but lately sense has been speaking to me and now I don't think so. I'm also thinking my very "safe" predictions of new PowerBooks I made before the Paris expo could be close to the real deal. I knew that would work...:)

Mactel's closer than we think?

The only problem is that Jobs rarely, if ever, appears on quarterly conference calls, it's mostly left to Oppenheimer.

I really don't think it is completely unfeasible that Apple announce a change to the intel switch launch. Wall street is already anticipating an earlier launch by as much as 2-3 months, rumours suggest as many as 4 configuration changes....'One more thing' usually suggests a major product annoucement..and Apple may need some decent momentum to keep the stock going through 1Q-3Q next year. I say Mactel's are closer than we think....

Um. If this is a joke, funny, if not..... blow it out yer bum. Jesus people (like yourself) are getting wayyyyyyy too comfortable with the demanding. No one anywhere has to change how or what they speak or do to suit you.

Wow, we've raised expectations WAY too high in the last few days. Updated iPods, PB and PowerMacs, nothing else. I'm keeping my expectations real low so that I'll be blown away should they announce something awesome.

I see a temporary ban looming, unless both of you wise up. Futurist, if you have an issue, take this over to community discussions where it belongs.

I've already been "bookmarked" (points to s/n) I admit it wasn't totally appropriate to go off topic, and I appologize to the other members, but, someone needed to. The New Nazi Order is taking over (and they *are* the new order), and I use any venue at any time to point them out; More need to do so. We already see a conservative "I love everyone (with a footnote "as we define "everyone") movement suppressing anyone and everything that doesn't act, speak, or think as they do.
There's a greater purpose to serve than a forum "oops" and/or moderators

Agree. Keep the preaching inside the church.
