Two unreleased Mac models have been spotted in Steam's November 2022 survey, which gathers anonymous information from willing Steam users on specific details of their computers, including the computer's model, CPU type, memory, and more.

In the survey for November 2022, two unreleased Macs with identifiers "Mac14,6" and "Mac15,4" were spotted towards the bottom of the list, alongside model identifiers that correspond to the Mac Studio, 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro, M2 MacBook Air, and other models.

Both "Mac14,6" and "Mac15,4" are listed with 0% usage on Steam's platform, but their placement on the list does suggest Apple may be testing the unreleased Macs with upcoming Apple silicon chips on Steam's gaming platform.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time we've seen a reference to an unannounced Mac with the model identifier "Mac14,6." That same identifier has been spotted in two separate (1,2) Geekbench score entries with the M2 Max chip, which is likely to come first in upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Apple was expected to announce the updated MacBook Pro models during the fall of this year but then pushed plans until 2023.

The upcoming Macs are expected to feature M2 Pro and M2 Max chips with faster performance and possible options for higher memory configurations. Apple announced the M2 chip in June, marking the beginning of the second generation of Apple silicon, which came first to the redesigned MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro.

(Thanks, Kim!)

At least Apple knows, how poor macOS steam library is, after they killed thousands of 32 bit games. Such a strange feeling that you cannot play Portal 2 or Grid 2, that was inside of older macs presentations, just because this is too hard to make minimal compatibility layer on software level.

Praying to Apple Gods that Apple surprises us with an Apple event in January 2023. Start out the new year strong!🙏
Given the manufacturing log-jam that frees up later in December, I am speculating its more of a March event. Diffidently the latest news's of a more localized limited lock down versus entire cities policy that is being dismantled quickly shows January is too soon. Apple needs to get their iPhone 14 pros moving.

Maybe, just maybe, the advent of Steam gaming on Apple Silicon is upon us?
Even if Apple produces a gaming SoC that is on par with 4090 RTX, it won’t help if the rest of the ecosystem and developers don’t support the platform.

Apple has to work with Valve and others to build Proton like runtime for macOS and what are the chances of that?

We have better chance of getting games running via Asahi Linux with Steam + Proton + x86 > arm in several years when they get the GPU drivers done.

I think it’s looking more and more likely a January event is happening, if so this signifies major product launches…

MacBook Pro 14 & 16”
Mac Pro
Pro Display XDR
Headset

Is my guess, although I am still unsure if the headset is actually a real thing, or whether it’s just for internal testing.

M2:
Max
Pro
Ultra

I’ve already forgotten what those labels mean and even if someone jogs my memory, I’ll soon forget again. They’re all meaningless superlatives.
Extreme?
Ultimate?
Apple's naming has been really crappy over the past few years imo.

Pro, Max, Ultra, and most likely what ever comes next sounds cheap and gimmicky.

I really dislike the "Max" when referring to Macs. Reading it is fine, but discussing it out loud can be really confusing.

Maybe a letter or number indicating the generation and performances level would have been much better, similar with Intel and their i-chips. Like the M1 could have been the entry-level chip, M3 could have been the equalient to the M1 Pro, and M5 for the Max, M7 for the Ultra, etc.

Each generation could be identified by indicating the "Gen", M1 = 1st Gen M1, M2 = 2nd Gen M1, etc.

At least it would be a clear way of identifying generation and performance level, without sounding like it was created by a 9 year old.

Apple really screwed up with the naming of the Apple TV related things. You see it even on this tech forum, people confusing the Apple TV, Apple TV app, and Apple TV Plus, and that is with techies. People in the real world don't know that there is a difference between them.

I lost count how many times I seen posts saying that people thought they had the Apple TV built into their new Smart TV.

I don’t think anyone has or will buy a Mac for gaming. But that doesn’t mean they don’t want their Mac to also be capable of gaming.
Also, they are reusing the same SoC design with iPads now. So, even if there aren’t many Mac games, there are definitely many iOS games. But not enough AAA games or even AA l/A games.

I have in the past, so I ruined your argument. That was even one reason I use a M1 Max 16" MBP besides what I can run on a 24" iMac. :D

But yeah I think as M1 metal3 gaming becomes more prevalent, we can easily see an increase of available games, but not on a level comparable to PC's, or consoles.

Imagine buying a mac for gaming.
yeah, I bought my iMac 2021 2tb 16gb 8gpu/8cpu thinking parallels would let me play emulated easily.

not a chance in hell. I just listed on craigslist for 1600 brand new condition including the Magic Trackpad. got a bunch o scammers messaging me already. but yeah I only used it to trade stocks, now I am bored of the iMac.

I might keep the trackpad tho for iPad. I like it a lot. but yeah, 1000 bucks off. it should be gone soon.

after I sell my iMac I am going to probably buy a 2023 MSI ge76 with 13 gen intel cpu and Nvidia 40 series gpu 4070.

prob looking around 2-2.5k but I assume that will last me 5 years and will take no space what soever, fold up, and set aside.

stupid iMac just sits there, staring at me, and taking up my precious desk space.

first item I regret buying from apple. but its because I thought parallels would be awesome, and it turned out to suck. imo

I use my M1 MacBook Air for such simple tasks only it might just last me a very long time. We just got new designs for most Macs that will probably last years. I suspect there is only a very small percentage of people who will benefit of the faster silicone.
