Many here are whining about old games (and the blast-furnace-heat dinosaur PCs that run them) but my guess is Apple is looking forward to hardware that allows new games. A billion iPhones, tablet market leading iPads and the 4th-largest PC selling Macs comprise a market devs will not ignore.
We are whining about full-fledged well done games. On computer (Windows and/or Mac) I can play Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike, Starcraft, Skyrim and so on.
Mobile gaming so far offers games of Nintendo 64 * level that good to spend 10 minutes on a bus stop.
I don’t think that running Insurgency or Portal requires blast furnace monster PC. Those games were not very demanding even at their beginning.

* - those old timer consoles and their games were often true masterpieces of programming. It was hard task to make decent game running on meagre hardware.
Meanwhile most of modern mobile games are just rubbish.

Gaming is so overrated and pointless. Solitaire, similar card games and chess is about all the games any user needs. These call of duty and whatever activision makes are just waste of time I don’t have a life gimmicks. I know, because I lived with a worthless roommate that played PC games all night and pretended to go to work. I enjoyed seeing him evicted. Bout’ he’s a game tester for Microsoft. 🙄 It’s one segment of the industry I wish never really existed. When geniuses like Gates and Jobs never got gaming you really know how stupid gaming really is.
That’s what you think. Don’t degrade people who play video games. There are people who are far more successful than you will ever be yet play video games occasionally.

I had IIci too. It was my first Mac.
My first Mac was a Power Macintosh 6100/60, running System 7.1.2, I think it was. The first PowerPC-native version! And, thus began my love of Macs! Owned the 8500/120 and then the G3 B&W, and then the G4 Digital Audio, and finally the G4 Quicksilver (which I still have and use for making MIDI music) When they went to Intel I hated them. Then they went to ARM and I love them again! :D

Even if Apple produces a gaming SoC that is on par with 4090 RTX, it won’t help if the rest of the ecosystem and developers don’t support the platform.

Apple has to work with Valve and others to build Proton like runtime for macOS and what are the chances of that?

We have better chance of getting games running via Asahi Linux with Steam + Proton + x86 > arm in several years when they get the GPU drivers done.
Even if Apple creates an SOC that is at the level of a 5090 or 6090, I still wouldn’t move over to it as a developer. Windows has the marketshare I need for ROI on my game.

Now as a gamer I STILL wouldn’t, as I have 500 games on my Steam library. I won’t be able to play those all on Mac.

So macs never will be “gaming” devices. Macs will need the marketshare of Windows for about a decade if not more before this changes. I’m not giving up my 500 games, some of which are 2003 games I still play.

Apple's naming has been really crappy over the past few years imo.

Pro, Max, Ultra, and most likely what ever comes next sounds cheap and gimmicky.

I really dislike the "Max" when referring to Macs. Reading it is fine, but discussing it out loud can be really confusing.

Maybe a letter or number indicating the generation and performances level would have been much better, similar with Intel and their i-chips. Like the M1 could have been the entry-level chip, M3 could have been the equalient to the M1 Pro, and M5 for the Max, M7 for the Ultra, etc.

Each generation could be identified by indicating the "Gen", M1 = 1st Gen M1, M2 = 2nd Gen M1, etc.

At least it would be a clear way of identifying generation and performance level, without sounding like it was created by a 9 year old.

Apple really screwed up with the naming of the Apple TV related things. You see it even on this tech forum, people confusing the Apple TV, Apple TV app, and Apple TV Plus, and that is with techies. People in the real world don't know that there is a difference between them.

I lost count how many times I seen posts saying that people thought they had the Apple TV built into their new Smart TV.
Agreed. I think they should have done a little what Intel does. M1 = M1. M2 = M1 Pro. M3 = M1 Max etc. then you put on generations. M1 2nd gen = M2 etc.

I totally get this, but few around here will, you are basically talking into an echo chamber. I have a gaming PC just for this, yes people build rigs just for games or single purposes, yet another thing around here people don't get. Also doesn't matter how good Apple hardware is, some publishers will not port to Mac because of Apple's past behaviours and snubbing the industry.

My Steam catalogue isn't that large only around 120 games, but some of them I have replayed just like you and I have no concerns they will stop working because of Apple's relentless moving things forward. And I can drop in a new GPU to keep up with more demanding games, just did this last month with a new 3060Ti. Sweet update to my 8 year old Haswell, which plays games just fine!

Case in point, you play too much video games to the point you can't seem to think before you write.

LOL I got thumbs-downed because I said I preferred Macs to PCs after using both for the same tasks. I mean, how dare I make such a personal decision like that, or express it here.

This place is really a journey 😂🤣
I’m the same way. 85% of my gaming is done on macs. I prefer that over windows any day. I have you thumbs up!

I love my base 14” MacBook Pro and base Mac Studio, but i am curious to see what they plan on doing for 3D graphics works and rendering. I still need a Windows machine for that so i do not see myself spending more than $2000 for an Apple Silicon Mac if it cannot compete with a Windows machine with a dedicated graphics card for that work flow.

Perhaps that is why they haven't released the Mac Pro. A lot of pros require more powerful graphics capabilities.

I agree with you somewhat. I prefer games like Factorio where you need to use your brain for both calculations and creativeness. It’s also why I like Minecraft and Terraria a lot. More on the creative side for those though. And these are all on Mac.

I don’t understand why people love Call of Duty so much.

Developers will not ignore the large market share the iPhone has. But Mac is different. Being 4th largest PC maker is not that large when you consider Windows has more than 80% of market share, and it's even higher in the gaming market.

I think Apple could improve their Mac / Apple TV gaming experience, but as today, Windows has a huge advantage in many aspects.
Yep. I’m making my game on Windows only just due to the marketshare. Even though any Mac hardware can play it without issues. It runs well on a crappy Windows laptop with integrated graphics from 2013.

You didn't get the point either. Most of the people here would like to have something to play on their Macs, rather than active 24/7 "cybersport" junkies. It's hard to be game junkie when you are MacOS or Linux user :D Well... some people can spend hours in Solitaire.

Lack of CAD software on Mac is hard too. Though, Mac version of AutoCAD is interesting.

If you have hours to play Solitaire, then either you are stealing time on your job or someone is paying your bills. In the case of the former roommate, he was not paying rent, forged government documents claiming he was on disability and refused a job offer I got him at my workplace because he claimed he was too sensitive to deal with customers who might shout at him. Yet he had no problem playing first person shooter games at 2 am in the morning!

And so you've taken your experience of a single person who wouldn't control themselves and use that to say anything beyond card games and chess is overrated and pointless wastes of time.

Apply the same logic to anything else "If you have hours to read books, then either you are stealing time on your job or someone is paying your bills." Or "Books are so overrated and pointless. The Odyssey, the works of Shakespeare and The Great Gatsby is about all the reading any user needs".

I'm with you that Call of Duty and most of modern Activision is drivel and I have zero interest but your roommate is gone so it no longer affects you, let people enjoy things.

And if you forge documents that you must be good in Photoshop. See that! Spending time in Photoshop is bad and criminal trait! XD

Two separate worlds, reading a novel vs playing a first person shooter game are different things. My anecdotal experience with my roommate is not a fluke. There are thousands of examples of these mindless games are not really making society any better especially among todays youth. They are more antisocial, more likely to develop schizophrenia, disconnect between reality and fantasy and lack moderation. There are others who have self control, but when I even look into developers by a lot of these games, their environment speaks volumes about workplace behavior. Anyway, I'm moving on, this is my experience.
