It's handy for traveling light since you only need to bring one charger to charge everything (phone, watch, airpods) instead of multiple chargers.

Anker makes a nice 4 port charger. (iPhone, iPad and Watch) I just unplug the thing and wrap up the cables and I'm done.

The only way XSs is getting a 20%+ Battery Capacity increase is Apple ditching 3D Touch. Along with some other improvement to battery and layout.

Which is why XR wont be getting much battery improvement, it doesn't have the 3D Touch Taptic Engine.
Or Apple is adding 3D Touch to the Xr which is why it isn’t getting any extra battery.

Eh. I'm using a Galaxy S10+, and I don't think this is a matter of Apple catching up. When different brands are coming out with similar features around the same time, it is just because the industry is moving in a certain direction. Apple likely would have included this feature regardless of what Samsung did.
Highly unlikely.
I don’t know how many iPhone/Samsung models you owned, but me,I owned pretty much every iPhone starting with 4 and also few Samsungs (Note series) and it’s evident Apple stopped innovating and even very slow in adopting latest tech after iPhone 5s.
good examples : large screens,OLED screens,fast charging,4k video,reverse charging,etc
many features still missing with almost no feature that other brands don’t have.

If they'd have spent less time on Air Power (profit margins, another purchase, bend over for Wall Street) and more time making stuff work together, you could have pictured Steve on stage unveiling this last year with the Xr and Xs release. "Just place your AirPods on the back of your iPhone Xr or Xs, and they start charging. No cables or chargers, just magic". Crowd would have gone bananas.

That a sorry ass company like Samsung has beaten them to the punch again should alarm Apple.

Nope, it would only be possible if it loses it's aluminium body, and we know Apple won't change to non aluminium MacBooks.
Beside that, where would you put a iPhone XS (Max), there's no place, even a watch would be inconvenient while doing work on it.

Short answer, bad idea.

HP has already answered this question before, in a sleek-looking body.

Its mostly glass chassis can be modified to act as a wireless charging plate.

Apple just needs to be innovative with designs. They're too afraid to change anything. The MacBook's design hasn't evolved in over a decade. It's the same rounded rectangular block we've been carrying two presidents ago, just slimmer.

Even the HP Envy 17 is more attractive and refreshing than the new MacBook Pros.

Like I said about the new iPads, time for them to ditch Lightning in favor of USB-C. Finally, people would be able to charge their MacBook, iPad, and iPhone with the same cable.

Why don't they put this on the Mac where it would be infinitely more useful than on an iPhone that barely has battery capacity to keep itself working for an entire day?

This way you can travel with just one cable. Plug your phone into the wall, and your EarPods (and maybe watch, but i doubt it) don’t need a separate cable.

Great:p.. Everything can charge everything else? What do we have chargers for again? Apple is trying to put Mophie out of business.

Although convenient in one space, it will damaging another.

Because Apple cares more about the pone/tablet market.??... That's why most of these technologies come mobile first, like TouchID, and desktop after, if its a success.

Better yet.... What I have been itching for is an iPad with bilateral Qi charging.... place my iPhone *and* my AirPods *and* my Apple Watch on top of my iPad / iPad Pro and have the iPad charge the other 3 devices wirelessly while the iPad is plugged in to Lightning / USB-C. That would be my ultimate travel charger.

UPDATE: How about a Smart Cover or Smart Folio that draws power from the iPad and has embedded Qi charging coils.

Airpower failed with trying to accomplish less.

I honestly don't get the point of why you would need this unless you just want a check box list of features to compare with your Samsung friends. If you are using your Airpods that often, you really need to do some introspection because if you are using them often, I wonder about your productivity, your social interactions at work and home.

They probably want this feature present to justify the mediocre battery life of airpods...

I'd be really interested only if it charged the Apple Watch. I could bring only one lighting cable to charge my iPhone during a weekend or a short vacation and be able to charge everything.
Packing the Watch charging cable is an hassle, as I have a nightstand charger with the original cable inside, so every time I have to open it, get the cable then put it back

A single charge of AirPods case lasts 2-3 days, so I don't really care about charging it on the phone, and I haven't bought the Qi compatible case as Lighting in just fine for charging twice a week...

It's of no interest to me the two way charging as I don't have AirPods (they won't stay in my ears).
The increase in battery capacity is of more interest.

Two way charging will no doubt be an extremely useful feature to a lot of people though.

So wait, Apple failed to create a wireless charging device (AirPower) but somehow can turn the iPhone into a wireless charging device????
I mean if they can achieve that with the iPhone then how is it they cannot achieve that with a charging pad???
So will the 2019 iPhone be called iPhone Air (Power)?

It's seriously getting to the point where I'm now considering abandoning iOS and going for an Android based phone.

Not really....great feature if you are caught with a dead phone in a pinch. I suspect the criticism is coming because Samsung did it first....so the feature must be pointless.
Bingo, that the main reason some users here try to trash this feature, because Apple follows Samsung and Huawei by introducing it. If Apple would have introduced this feature before them the dynamics of the discussion here would be different and the main plot points would be: apple is the leader everybody follows, android manufacturers are just copycats etc.

The questions "why do I need this feature" is completely pointless when nobody is trying in the first place to make the point that this feature is needed. If you don't use it it's fine, it doesn't create any problems or affect the phone in any way.

It seems you never had an Envy 17...is not, the back is plastic, the hinge is weak, it has some issues, the heat is felt not on the top like on the MBP but even around "ASD.." row keys, so its clear you have 17" just for light-medium use, it has sensors issues and light affects the windows hello, speakers and audio drivers are weak, the lid has flex to it when its open and even when its closed, very hard flex, the display is 1 class under mbp and so on...so please...after spending and returning and exchange 3 HP envy 17, i went with surfacebook 2 and after that with mbp 2018
But again, the price says it all
