Solid money on this being used as a crap excuse for needing to upgrade to the newest Apple Watch if you want it to work with the 2-way charging on your new iPhone.

If this is the "wow" feature that Apple has planned for 2019 it's going to be a snooze-fest and I'll just keep my iPhone X into a 3rd year of use.

No.
Sad is Apple doing things that are useless.
Sad is Apple accepting the limitations of Qi standard instead of doing wireless charging from the ground up.

When Apple went all in on Qi 2 years ago...it did so with the expectation (both internally, and toward customers) that they would not settle for the crap experience that passes for Qi...they would bring their own innovation to the space.
After 2+ years they've acknowledge that they failed to do so.

I blame Apple for making a bad bet 2 years ago that they would be able to work within the Qi standard to accomplish their goals. It should have been obvious at the time that the current state of Qi was exceptionally lame, and that they would be better off taking a full on Apple approach and starting from scratch with wireless charging. But, they gambled and lost instead.

Please. If Apple came up with a new wireless charging standard they'd get slammed for making something proprietary that wasn't compatible with existing standards. Apple can't win it seems.

The only way XSs is getting a 20%+ Battery Capacity increase is Apple ditching 3D Touch. Along with some other improvement to battery and layout.

Which is why XR wont be getting much battery improvement, it doesn't have the 3D Touch Taptic Engine.

While some may like this idea out of convenience, I would want to know how is this going to affect the battery life? I can see this increases the charging cycle quickly and reducing its life cycle. I won’t be the beta tester if this comes to fruition.

Iam good with a bigger battery as long as the phone does not become too thick.

when samsung and huawei does this "its a gimmick", when apple does this its "courage"
Who called it a gimmick? I think most said it was a good idea for something like AirPods or the Watch.

I hope thats not the case. I would 100% rather have 3D touch than a bigger battery.

This seems like the most pointless feature to offer on a phone. Does anybody actually want this?? Why not just buy a wireless charger? It would be much quicker and more efficient. I don't see any valid use cases for this tech.

  • Top off your AirPods or Watch when you're out and about
  • Don't have to carry around an extra charger/cable when you're away from home. Just plug in your phone to a charger and rest your Airpods/Watch on the back to charge it as well. Particularly useful for the Watch which has its own little charger you'd otherwise have to bring.

quite a number of reviewers of s10 and mate 20 pro, saying the low wattage to charge a wireless device is too slow and thus a gimmick

what i would love is if they built wireless chargers into macbooks.

Nope, it would only be possible if it loses it's aluminium body, and we know Apple won't change to non aluminium MacBooks.
Beside that, where would you put a iPhone XS (Max), there's no place, even a watch would be inconvenient while doing work on it.

Short answer, bad idea.

They should have just done this instead of trying to come out with another product (AirPower) that would have likely cost at least $200. If they had put their efforts into adding this functionality to iPhones and iPads, they would have created something more useful for people. Can't tell you how many times I wish I could just set my AirPods on my iPhone X to have them charge wirelessly... Samsung got that right on their latest devices.

well their grand idea airpower had failed)

Yeah, it would have been a terrible idea to use a proprietary protocol for wireless charging. There are already so many options for Qi charging, and the standard is fine. I've got a bunch of them scattered about my home, car, and office. I keep my phone fully charged without even thinking about it.

Apple doesn't need another lightning connection situation. Just use the standards. Qi. USB C.

You are currently on a rumor site. They are going to post rumors.

Ming-Chi Kuo is guessing about something that was not leaked. Is he starting a rumor? Sure. But the only time his predictions ever come to fruition, is when the inevitable eventually happens. He predicted 32GB RAM in MBP for years before it finally, eventually, happened.

What if I told you: I can charge my phone WITH my phone.....

Lol this is officially Apple catching up to Samsung now..and only select features.
This is really sad.
Used to be the other way around, and that’s why iPhone WAS great.
I own an Xs Max but I have almost no doubt I will be buying Samsung phones from now on.
better design,better features,better technology at lower/same price.

Eh. I'm using a Galaxy S10+, and I don't think this is a matter of Apple catching up. When different brands are coming out with similar features around the same time, it is just because the industry is moving in a certain direction. Apple likely would have included this feature regardless of what Samsung did.

I just bought two solar powered flashlights. I just leave them on and pointed at each other until they are both fully charged.
