Wonder if the Apple App Store execs are feeling a bit squirmy in their seats...
Only if they have 80% of the app market.

There are other search engines (like Duck Duck Go and Bing), so I'm not sure if the DOJ has a strong case. Google is certainly the most-used search engine, but it's not as dominant as IE was back in the 90s. Most people might leave Google as the default on iPhones, but they aren't forced to.
The test isn’t whether other search engines exist.

The government really doesn’t yet know how to deal with things such as Google. The antitrust laws were put in for things like oil and phone, when there truly were no other options. If you needed gas for a car there was a single company that provided that. As Google said, you have many options for searching. I haven’t read the lawsuit details, but I personally think Google will win. At least here in America. IMO

Do what you will but people will still choose to use Google regardless of the options presented.

Remember folks, there is a world outside of this forum, where billions of people give absolutely zero ***** about search engine dominance, they just want to find things, on Google.

I'm not disagreeing with the "google is a monopoly" statement, but, to all the folks here screaming "break them up"... what do you expect to happen out of this? The is specifically about Google search and not necessarily Google as a whole. You can't exactly break that up like Ma Bell was. Breaking Google up would mean you'd have one company that is just Google search and the issue that the government is complaining about would remain.

I really believe if Google chose not to pay Apple, folks would still use Google on Apple devices.

Most people would use whatever the default is. Only tech nerds actually go into those settings and change the search engine. It would remain the same if Apple switched the default to, for example, DuckDuckGo (what I've been using for years).

To all the people that like this: What change are you hoping for?

A better search engine? - go pick another one
A lower quality one? - go pick another one
Google off of Apple? - see above
A search engine you pay for? - Really?

I cant imagine what change could occur here that would benefit any of us.

Alphabet (Google) has much more than a search engine behind its monopoly.

They are also the #1 for web advertising and buy up competitors just to stay on top. The digital advertising market is probably as strong of a case as the web engine. Years ago, I had an AdMob account that brought in $12k in a single month as revenue for my app. The following year Google finished the acquisition of AdMob and with the EXACT SAME clicks and view counts on my ads I got less than $500 of revenue. I was also paying for advertising at the same time and my advertiser rates did not change; only my income.

I don't have a problem with Google selling advertising to cover expenses for Search Engine including premium spot ad "rankings", but the majority of the advertising business needs to be split off into a different company.

Split into separate companies for:

Ads
YouTube
Search
Cloud Services (Mail, Docs, etc)
Android

You mean MSFT is a monopoly even after the previous anti trust lawsuits.

Break. Them. Up.

In. To. What?

I can sorta see the case for making Alphabet separate Google Search, Youtube, Gmail, etc into separate legal entities...

But they'll still be related. And they'll still be sharing information between them... only they'll have to pay each other for the data. But it's all the same wallet in the end.

It's kinda like Samsung. We just think it's "Samsung" but it's actually a conglomerate if interconnected companies. Samsung Electronics has to buy chips from Samsung Semiconductor... and screens from Samsung Display... etc.

If Google gets "broken up" into separate companies... won't it just be the same thing but with different letterhead at each company?

I don’t even use it on my Samsung. Not that it matters the way that phone hemorrhages data about me. I preferred Bing for awhile, but now use DuckDuckGo. It’s not even about privacy. Google just doesn’t bring me the best results and hasn’t in a long while.

are end users really just baby ducklings incapable of thinking on their own? I haven't used Google search for at least 5 years. It's NOT THAT HARD to not use it- just click a different icon (that says DDG)

LOL
Meh, Not a monopoly because there are others.
Meh, Just because there are others doesn't mean they aren't a monopoly

Because....Consistency. Thank you for putting it in a single comment :p
I realize its more complicated than that, but since I am always on the opposite side of you on the App store....I just needed to frame this one and put it on the wall...

So funny, people saying finally, break them up, etc.. Yet Apple is just as bad or worse when it comes to locking down their ecosystem and forcing people to use their apps. Heck Apple is a direct benefactor of Google, Google pays them to make Google the default search engine. Wish they would pay Apple to make Google Assistant the default voice assistant too honestly! There is a reason they are number 1 and people have the option to easily switch search engines, this lawsuit should get thrown out imo. Let me ask, just how many of those lawyers use bing or duck duck go over Google???? Yeah that's what I thought. They probably used Google search to learn how to spell Monopoly.
