Hmm... I just tried to get the update through iTunes, but it keeps telling me that 1.1.4 is the current version. Is this Apple trying to prevent further upgrades until they can get this problem sorted out?

My phone is also Jailbroken (using ZIphone), is there something I need to do before upgrading?

Also, has anyone else been able to get the MobileMe OSX update through software update? I was able to get iTunes 7.7, but the mm update never came.

I just left the Canadian release event at Broadway and Arbutus (Vancouver). There were about 150 people in line at 9:30am when I left. I was 57th in line and was told we would certainly get an iPhone..

The Rogers employees were scrambling and trying to get through to head office on their phones. Activations are a no-go. The doors opened at 8, and over an hour later the same 3 people were at the tills, waiting for their phone.

Lots of people started leaving, because they had to get to work. I left out of boredom and a fading interest in the novelty of owning one on release day. Glad I only wasted a couple of hours. First in line had been there since 8pm the previous eve.

The guy who made http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ was next to me. Nice guy... he writes about it more over there.

...but I have to question why they had to do a world-wide launch with not nearly enough phones to satisfy the demand they wanted.

Thank you. Exactly how I feel.

Only Apple supporters should have been allowed to buy the iPhone first. This means people who bash Apple or only own Windows PCs would have to sit out the first round.

The answer to your question is that it is incumbent upon the vendor to ensure the update does not disable the users phone or, at the very least, a way is provided to roll back the update so that the user has a working phone.

Your points are irrelevant to the discussion. You sound like Microsoft.

I don't use Apple products at work. I would like to, but obviously Apple is not serious about servers.

Ted

Sorry to say so, but if you are so dependant on a mobile phone, then comes my question:

Why on earth do you dare to do a rather unnecessary update to your phone without knowing, if there are any serious issues?

If you need your phone for...errr...sending and receiving calls, well you didn't need v2.0 on launch day, did you?

Just ask any professional here on the boards, that use their Apple Products for WORK. The major part of them waits at least a couple of days for the dust to settle, before they jump on any point upgrade (and yes, I'm referring to stuff like going from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3). We all know, that updates can break stuff.

Did you keep unplugging and replugging, or did you leave it alone?

I left it plugged in. I would just click on "music", "Movies", "Ringtones" or something in the left hand column and then click back on iphone. It would again try to access itunes (I probably did this 12 times)

uuugh

I got a 16gb White for myself and the wife and cannot activate them. I have tried now for the last 2 hours. All of a sudden it just let me go to the homescreen with no signal. Although it is not activated I am on the app store and trying out the new software. I just want it activated!!!!!

My 3g iPhone just activated; however, it still did not complete the process with the account info, so I can't sync the phone. Still not all there. Have been trying since 10:30 AM EST.

Mine just activated as well, it wasn't linking to the store however so I left it plugged in and played some games I downloaded, in the middle of the game all of a sudden some screens came up to verify my information and then it's not restoring all my old data!

Keep trying guys and keep it plugged in, hopefully we'll get a lot of these to work in the next few hours (still waiting on the first gen iPhone to really do anything ...)

Went to the Apple Store in Paramus NJ-

Line completley around the other side of the mall, the wait looks to be forever. People are complaining, employees looked frazzled, and the whole ordeal seems not worth the wait.

Add to this, the activation fiasco, I'm just going to pretend the iPhone comes out Next Friday...

By then all this mess should be gone.

God willing.

so people, just remember, iPhone 2.0 hits July 18th!

:D

okay, so i was just sitting at my mac waiting for itunes to connect so i could finish my activation, when i decided to "wake" my iphone up, and surprise to me, everything was working...

HOWEVER

it has not synced yet and i don't have any contacts or music/videos on it....slightly frustrating, but i've taken a step in the right direction...

I'm pissed about this as well, but I agree...KEEP IT PLUGGED IN!

My iPhone got the error and had the iTunes + USB icon on the screen at first because it couldn't connect to the servers to finish. As I was reading your posts, my iPhone suddenly came to life saying that it was syncing!

Talk about frown into a smile. I'll get the iPhone 3G tomorrow, but I'm glad I got 2.0.

:apple:

It's all a matter of perspective. See, I'm stuck at work until 5p. So, I could have had my iPhone charge up all day and then take it home for potential activation. Instead, I can't complain about activation because I can only complain about lack of existing iPhones in any real world store.

I guess what I'm saying is, I don't feel bad about the activation problems you're having because at least you passed step 1 - buy an iPhone.

For those who have seen Harry Potter and know what nearly-headless Nick looks like when he pulls his head off of his neck, well, that's what my Nokia phone looks like. It's about to die and I have no alternative but to get a new phone. If it dies before I get the iPhone, then I guess I have no phone at all, since this is my only phone (no landline).

:( :( :(

Nice reference, almost magical :D

I am with you on that.
I went yesterday to the AT&T store in Claremont(San Diego) and while I was there at least 5 people called asking about the iPhone.
My friend went to line at 4am and the iPhone 16gig black run out one person prior to him in line.

I figure out is just better wait few days and let this madness settle and then get my iPhone. Much better than go through this hell right now.

Come on, give them a friggin break. Blame Apple's problems at least to some part on all those sites like MacRumors. Yes, you read right, I blamed MacRumors.

Nerdy sites offered early download links to the new firmware. In fact the link to a direct download was posted here on the front page. There are millions of first gen iPhones out, and you wonder why their servers got hammered?

I'm sure what really happened is that one or more of Apple's servers went down, or had a software glitch. How could they not be prepared for this?

It's not anybody's fault but Apple that they PUBLICLY released a file like the iPhone firmware or Apps on the internet and couldn't deal with the bandwidth issues.

Probably shouldn't've fed the troll...

Ok, yes this is what you get for living on the bleeding edge, but if you were to get the first model of a car the day it was available, would you expect that the engine wouldn't start?

Here is my only rub:

They de-activated my current iPhone and now I keep getting error -4 trying to activate my 3G one. So, I have no phone at all. Oh, and yeah, I left the apple store unactivated b/c according to the (newbie) employee "their iTunes wasn't working."

I wouldn't care if it didn't knock out my old phone. Oh well. It will all be good.

Guys, have some patience. This happened last year, why would you expect anything different? It may be a while before you can activate your phone. So what? Wait a few hours, maybe it'll work then.

How long should we wait? Can you go back to the store to get it active?

If you can't connect to the itunes store to update your iphone.
Close itunes (all the way)
Open terminal and sudo dscacheutil -flushcache (you'll need admin password)
then try and sync
It worked for me and others.

Weird.. My phone just all of a sudden started working as well. Though it still wont let me sync/backup my phone...

I got up at 5 and was 17th in line at the apple store Houston galleria. When I get in there they have an IRU error with my account and call AT&T to resolve it. No dice, the AT&T rep said to go to an AT&T store to have it fixed, that's all they could do. My account was a business account YEARS ago but hasn't been for a long time. I even called AT&T yesterday to verify and was told that I was good to go. Now I am in line @ AT&T and almost definitely won't get an iPhone today. I HATE AT&T. HATE them. HATE.

update: i got the LAST FREAKIN' IPHONE THAT AT&T HAD IN HOUSTON. 8 GB black, i'll take it... now waiting forever to activate at home... what a morning. oh, and the AT&T guy said the rep on the phone should have been able to resolve my issue on the spot with apple, but apparently "he was trippin"
