I agree. We have lots of Apple products but this has left a bad taste in my mouth. Why in the world to I have to reactivate a phone that I've been using for nearly a year? I've also been an AT&T customer before that. This is a totally unacceptable screwup on Apple and AT&T's part.

So I wanted the update as soon as it came out? How is this the customer's fault? My phone is pretty much bricked until Apple or AT&T gets their act together.

Guess I'll have to pop the sim out and into my old Treo when I get home.

The answer to your question is that it is incumbent upon the vendor to ensure the update does not disable the users phone or, at the very least, a way is provided to roll back the update so that the user has a working phone.

Your points are irrelevant to the discussion. You sound like Microsoft.

I don't use Apple products at work. I would like to, but obviously Apple is not serious about servers.

Hallalujah! On the 42nd attempt (I counted) of going back and forth between "music" and "iPhone" on iTunes... I FINALLY got my ver1 phone updated, reactivated, and synced with 2.0.

I'm still pissed though....

Thank you. Exactly how I feel.

<irrational>

Only Apple supporters should have been allowed to buy the iPhone first. This means people who bash Apple or only own Windows PCs would have to sit out the first round.

</irrational>

Not sure if this is correct, but didn't Apple spread out the first iPhone (G2) every few days by country, so not to have these problems? Not sure why I think is was the way it happened last time.

I guess some people need to have an iphone right away. Well, some people needed the macbook air right away, and I recall how well that went. Personally I'm waiting until the first set of 2nd-gen iphones gets into circulation to see what random battery problems they'll end up having, etc. I'm not bashing apple, I love them. But am I the only one who thinks running out to buy the very first one is not such a good idea?

Most disappointing day ever...

... whining deleted ...

What an awful day,
Adam
:(:(:(:(

I'm sure the billion people on this planet who are living in poverty and hunger would be moved by your suffering of not being able to have a working iPhone right now.

Fill up your SUV, drive down to Starbux and buy a $5 latte. We'll all feel better.

Still waiting

This iPhone activation and iPod Touch 2.0 firmware update looks like one of the worst problems of it's kind with Apple at least. I guess patience is the order of the day.

iPhone 3G Activation process

I'm a bit unfamiliar with how the activation system works. But will the iPhone 3G not log onto the AT&T /O2 networks until you have activated with Itunes?

bit of a stupid question, but it would be useful to hear everyone's opinion.

thanks

From Italy. The iTunes activation doesn't work: -4 error code while it try to connect to iTunes servers. I've been trying since 2 hours.
Too bad Apple.

Guys, have some patience. This happened last year, why would you expect anything different? It may be a while before you can activate your phone. So what? Wait a few hours, maybe it'll work then.

I am with you 100%.

But this is MacRumors, all of the children in here are like spoiled brats on Christmas morning. Someone forgot the batteries for all of their toys and they are running around screaming and crying.

It would make sense to just wait a short bit and have some understanding. But then again that is more of a mature, adult-like characteristic.

I mean come-on, you knew it was going to be a crazy day, thus the standing in line and over use of "!!!" in the forums. Then you are angry when the craziness causes some delay on the processing side of things?

Slow down, relax. It'll all work out.

If you are really that angry and upset, then take it back, return it. Truth is, none of you will.

If you can't connect to the itunes store to update your iphone.
Close itunes (all the way)
Open terminal and sudo dscacheutil -flushcache (you'll need admin password)
then try and sync
It worked for me and others.

DO THIS^^^^^

I actually do have an SUV. And I work really hard for it... so get over yourself.

Time is valuable and today's launch was a waste of time... But really, to make a parallel to getting an iPhone and people living in poverty is just dumb. I guess we should all just take our iPhones and Apple products back and just stop consuming.

Apple screwed up. Whining or not, I'm sorry, Apple is running a business. I'm a unhappy customer and stockholder. Today was unacceptable. Individuals who work for the respective company's should lose their jobs because of today. They obviously aren't doing a very good one.

This is a bad day for Apple... and they keep having bad days. Maybe if they weren't so secretive about their inner workings, it might foster communication between employees and customers so mishaps like this don't happen.

At least you jumped the hurdle :D

+1

My time is worth way more to me than the iPhone will ever be. Apple and ATT should both be offering suggestions other than...keep trying.

AT&T Absolutely Sucks and Apple Blew It Big Time

Apple really blew this launch.

The management at the AT&T store we went to was hostile, IMO, to the customers in terms of checking whether you were eligible for the phone. We pay our bill online so the payment didn't show on the eligibility website, and the manager said out loud to the dozens of people inline that we were past due on our bill (which wasn't true). They also said that if you fell to sleep waiting for the phone that the police would escort you off the property for vagrancy. The also said that if you did not complete your purchase in 10-minutes, then you would lose the opportunity to purchase a new phone.

After getting into the store, the pricing for the phones didn't appear on the AT&T cash register. Then, their servers were SUPER-slow. It took us almost an hour to complete just the checkout process. To "speed-up" the process, they send us home with unactivated phones. Now, iTunes is showing the -4 error & we are both without phones!

I can tell you that the way this was handled did not make either Apple or AT&T look to good in the eyes of many existing and new subscribers.

Exactly

I left it plugged in. I would just click on "music", "Movies", "Ringtones" or something in the left hand column and then click back on iphone. It would again try to access itunes (I probably did this 12 times)

My Iphone (that won't activate) has been stuck on a screen that shows a USB cord connecting to the Itunes logo. Any idea how to get around this screen so I can play with the phone a little?
