The setup and activation took about 8 minutes total time. I obviously didnt hook up my music or contacts yet, nor gotten to play with any Apps.

I got to the Menlo park NJ mall at 645 AM and was 10th in line. everything went very orderly.

I was one of the 1st 10 people in the store and they opened the store in dramatic fashion with lights flashing and music while the store employees clapped and took pictures....it was quite odd.

Guys, have some patience. This happened last year, why would you expect anything different? It may be a while before you can activate your phone. So what? Wait a few hours, maybe it'll work then.

Maybe Apple and ATT should have realized that before they decided to have in store activation simultaneously all around the country and the world? Pathetic experience. 4 customers are going in for every 45 minutes. Completely poor performance.

Serves them right for their new ********.

If AT&T can't activate it in the store why would you expect to be able to go home and immediately activate? It is the same server! Just be patient and stop panicking.

THIS did not happen last year. ATT sucks. I waited 5 hours, bought my WHITE iphone, then waited 1.5 hours for the "activation" and then was told...take it home and try it.

Not acceptable at all.
Last year, many people had activation problems on iTunes. Same thing is happening this year. It'll probably happen the next time the iPhone is updated too.

Here in Spain the launch has been a massive disaster. Telefonica have been ultra secretive about pricing plans etc. until the last minute (yesterday) and then it turns out that on launch day you cant actually buy a phone anywhere in the country other than their flagship store in Madrid!!!

ALL THIS HYPE AND EXPECTATION FOR NOTHING. WHAT A ****ING WASTE OF TIME AND ENERGY!!!!

And also the plans suck. Apple screwed up big time on this.

Apple really screwed this one up. No kidding they knew very well that the demand for iPhone would be crazy.

Most people in the UK have been waiting 7 hours or so to activate their bricks too - I certainly have - its been down since about 9am here (4pm now)

I was 25th in line. Probably 20 people's iphone so-called "activation step" in itunes(which as long as it is recognized by itunes means it's activated!!! the manager got a call as I was waiting there with mine plugged in telling him) worked fine then mine was sitting for 5 mins. They let me go after that because they received a call telling them that as long as itunes recognizes it, it's activated, as mine is. So they are probably letting a lot of people go right now. My phone is still sitting at that step here at home as I type. This is just crappy because I cannot sync anything until this is done. That means no contacts, music, etc. I hope Apple gets this going soon.

all these 3g phones have 2.0 already loaded, so it has been ready for some time. Why they didn't release 2.0 a week ago to let existing users upgrade is beyond me. At least their servers wouldn't be getting hit half as hard as they are now.

Hopefully i can pick one up tomorrow morning at an Apple store. i'm hoping they will have decent inventory.

So is ATT still charging $18 activation fee when sending people home to activate the phone themselves? I think they should waive this charge if people are having to do it themselves. Actually, I think there shouldn't even be an activation fee but I'm not opening that can of worms today.

For real though, whats the big deal about getting it today, or waiting a few weeks. Wow you got it the day it came out, big deal, I'll wait a few weeks, walk in and walk out, no lines, no wait, no problem. Thats the problem with america everybody wants now now now. And it would be nice to hear that someone cracked it. So i'll wait

the couple 4 spots behind me sold their place in line for $250. the guy offered me $100, i laughed at him. he asked my price, i said "no sale". if i knew it would have come to that much...i really would have reconsidered haha. oh well. i guess that person gets a paid for iphone next week.

Same with me, only, I bought the Black one;)

NOT everyone like this year. Your defending a company or companies that should not be defended for their lack of attention to details.

Apple should have seen this coming and not played things so tight. The 2.0 upgrade should have been made available to previous iPhone/iPodTouch owners at the end of last week or the beginning of this week to get ahead of some of the iTunes bottlenecking problems that we knew would be a problem.

Seriously, what were they thinking!

Yeah this is what pisses the HELL outta me. Excuse my language.
Why on EARTH would they wait until the very last minute to release everything? Now nothing really works.
Me is not working correctly. Downloading iTunes 7.7 is an issue. Downloading 2.0 is another issue. Activations are another issue, if not impossible.
WTF?!

Older version of 2.0 that needs upgrading is what is on the 3G phone

Boca Raton, FL AT&T Report. Arrived at 6:30 AM. Received #41. Got into the store at 10:00 AM and out with iPhone at 10:20 AM. Obviously not activated. A very slow process, but I got the phone. They only had 80 phones this morning, but FedEx delivered some after I got in the store.

I waited with my iPhone tethered in the store for over an hour....the lines stopped after moving so smoothly for the first couple hours. Then they started sending us home saying just plug it in an hour. I'm at home and I still can't get it activated...

Perhaps it was total BS about the special version of iTunes in Apple stores that you had to unbrick special from them.

curse you Jobs. How can you make this day such a big deal and not even have enough iphones for half of your customers. Atleast make a huge first day sale then start to slow down stock. But seriously, to only have maybe 40 phones at an at&t store first day? If you were there at 4:00AM you were the only ones to have a chance. I believe i just got i****ed!:apple:
