The problem is that so many people are out there with bricks of their old phone now and a brand spanking new piece of glass and plastic that won't work either and no cellphone on a work day.

I've had it

Today is a testament to technology project management.

You don't upgrade iTunes software and iPhone software, convert .Mac to .Me, launch new MobileMe services, and rollout new hardware to a demanding consumer base - all within 24 hours of eachother.

Steve got cocky. Shame.

I bet all you jailbreak haters would love a Dev Team activation solution right about now. :D

Bailed: This is ridiculous

I went early to my local South Salt Lake City ATT store. I got there at 6am and found myself at number 45 in line. I was fully prepared to wait and was ready to tolerate a reasonably lengthy timeframe.

I bailed at 8:45 for the following reasons:

  1. We received no communication from the store staff until after 8:30.
  2. When we finally heard from them, we were told they only had 50 phones on hand: 30 16-gigs and 20 8-gigs, with the 16s evenly divided between black and white.
  3. I did a poll of the 44 people in line in front of me and confirmed that nearly every one of them wanted a 16 gig, assuring that none would be left for me.
  4. The kicker: After 45 minutes of open season, they had only processed 7 people. At that pace I would have been in line for an additional 4.5 hours or so.

Absolutely ridiculous. I don't mind being subject to line-waiting-goofiness, but the signup process makes Disney on a holiday weekend look like a good idea.

I figured the biggest issue would be download the 2.0 firmware. So this morning when I checked and it started downloading right away, I was quite pleased. Then I started getting the same dreaded "Cannot connect to iTunes Store" message that many others are. Sigh. Different servers, different network? Who knows. Oh well, I can live without a cellphone for a day. (Although I really wished I had my new apps to play around with during slow times at work. :) )

iPhone update woes

I'm really OVER Apple's gross inability to manage a product launch. I fired up iTunes this morning and it wanted to update my iPhone. I said yes, downloaded the updater, installed, etc...and then it just stopped. Error -9838. My iPhone doesn't work. It's my primary # and business line. It's 8:30am. I have no way to make or receive work calls. When I call customer service, I'm told that no agents are available and that I should call back later.

This SUCKS hard.

I have a hard time blaming Apple for this. I mean the fact that its the activation process implies that its AT&Ts fault since they're the ones with the cell phone network, not Apple. If iTunes is trying to talk to an AT&T server behind the scenes and the AT&T server is hosed, then its really not Apple's fault.

That's right!

Didn't you know that someone put a gun to Jobs' head and forced him to partner with AT & T?

Yeah this is what pisses the HELL outta me. Excuse my language.
Why on EARTH would they wait until the very last minute to release everything? Now nothing really works.
Me is not working correctly. Downloading iTunes 7.7 is an issue. Downloading 2.0 is another issue. Activations are another issue, if not impossible.
WTF?!

And now the press is reporting it as if it were a software problem vs. the server problem that it actually is!

No joy here

Camped the Layton, Utah store and by opening had about 70 people in line (was #3). Wife joined up about an hour before the doors opened (yes, she got to sleep in a bed). Picked up a black and white 16 GB. Was sent home with a black and a white 16 GB brick. Wife is without a phone (was already an AT&T customer). JUST got connected to iTunes for her phone--wonder what the chances are at connecting for two phones in one day will be given all the issues.

Shoot me.

gee moron, what happens when to many people try to access a server all at once to get files and the traffic is greater than what that server is used to handling? it crashes.

if you were worrying about standing in line, problems with activation, ect you shouldn't of went out and bought a phone, you should expect problems with 200 people are outside lined up for a phone and there would be activation time and what not. if you didn't, you're stupid for lining up for a product and having no idea what to expect.

either way your stupid. getting my 2.0 firmware right now and have no problems with my V1 iphone and will be getting my iphone 2.0 in 2 weeks before my cruise and avoid waiting in the long lines and have problems with activation.

people are asinine
Looks like you'll be the one crying foul soon if you go to try and install the 2.0 software and it bricks your phone because it can't reactivate it (like has already happened for numerous people)!

What about Apple Stores

Has any existing att customer tried to buy an iphone from an apple store? Paid the full proce of 399 and 499? Thanks...

I'm totally screwed at the moment.

First, I was 57th in line at my local AT&T store this AM....and they were sold out at 50! WTF??!!! They offered the opportunity to wait in line and sign up for delivery on Monday... BUT I'm going overseas tomorrow morning and now won't be able to get a 3G for two freaking months! Can't believe that the store only got 50 frigging phones!!!!

NOW... I went to update my 1st Gen iPhone to 2.0 which went well UNTIL the end when I am now getting the same errors as others. My phone is stuck on EMERGENCY CALL only when sliding the button... AND I need my phone NOW for my final flight reservations, and at the same time, my company is trying to reach me on the phone from Asia, and can't! This SUCKS!!!

If they don't fix it by tomorrow morning, I will be completely without cell phone while traveling, and that is simply UNACCEPTABLE!

Apple looks like Microsoft this AM!:mad::mad:

old phone brick

I didn't even think about the fact that the update would brick my existing iPhone because of activation. I obviously didn't *need* to update, so Apple should have given us a warning if the update process would destroy usage of existing phones.

Not very happy, but I should have waited.

I'm in the same boat.

I can't believe they killed the existing users phones this way. What company in their right mind allows that to happen?

I can live without the cell phone, but it hurts. It's my only phone. I have no way to making or receiving calls at all right now. (I'm not at work.)

This is very Microsoft like. Very. It reminds me of patching an NT server.... oh God.... you never knew if it would ever work again... lol...

anyone who waited in line deserves this!

i don't understand the hysteria. it's not like there won't be an iphone next week.

I'll be willing to bet anyone that sometime in the next three months there will be a class-action lawsuit filed against Apple and AT&T for loss of service during this debacle.

C'mon... any takers??

I have to give props to an AT&T store in Oklahoma City -- the store at NW Expressway and Rockwell.

I arrived about 5:15 AM and was about 40th in line. The people in line were very friendly and helped the time pass very quickly. Starting around 7:30, some AT&T employees (dressed in black iPhone 3G shirts) passed through the line. They counted people, checked eligibility, and gave rate plan info. By this time the line had grown to at least 100 people and wrapped completely around the store. Around 8:00, the first ten people were let into the store. I got into the store about 9:15. In the store, there were about fifteen employees working, maybe more. They had about ten registers doing activations. I had a rather complex issue involving addition of a new line and a swap numbers on other lines. This took about ten minutes of work to accomplish. We waited another ten minutes for the iTunes activation process. Ultimately, we gave up on iTunes, and they sent me home around 9:40 with a non-activated phone.

At home, iTunes has given me error messages and endless progress bars. However, I noticed that I can send and receive calls. Yet, iTunes does not recognize it as activated. So it appears that I am at least partially activated.

So, while Apple's part of this continues to be a problem, I have nothing but good things to say about the AT&T store. They were friendly, well-prepared, and handled the load with exceeding grace. I'm going to call their manager in a few days and tell him/her how well the store did.

One way activation issues could have been avoided...

I am an apple fan and firm product supporter. I understand apple wants to see new iPhones, but for those that already paid a premium for the original iPhone, it would have been nice to get the firmware version 2 upgrade early.

After all we are the existing customers whom have made a version 2 possible.

By releasing the version 2 firmware upgrade to existing customers first, the rush to upgrade firmware and activate would have been over with already. All that would be left are new customers, and those who needed GPS and a faster connection. No big deal. They have waited this long.

My biggest concern now is: I have a generation 1 iPhone with version 2 software and no service because every tom dick and harry in the world is trying to activate at the same time. Oh and by the way, I am the primary contact if my son has a problem at daycare and the primary number is my cell.

Moral of the story: take care of the loyal, first.

Did I call you stupid? You must be 14 years old living with Mommy and Daddy still. If it is Apple's fault, than why are the consumers to blame? We should have known they were ill prepared for this launch?

Move on.

No, but that doesn't mean I can't call you stupid, which you were. if everyone is trying to jump onto something at once, it usually crashes, not rocket science.

nice work using the usual "I bet your still 14 living with mommy and daddy" line that everyone pulls, I see you're mr originality. Come up with something different, clever, and maybe an insult you made up on you're own, not taken from a thousand internet message boards. Pathetic attempt at an insult from certain pathetic individual.

MILLIONS of people are jumping onto the server right now to check out apps, download 2.0, activate through itunes, ect. do you NOT think there is going to be some slowdown? not only are the millions of people who are usually touring itunes right now on itunes, but increased traffic WORLD WIDE, as well. I think people need to be a little more understanding.
