If the update comes at the right time (IE, a time when I have $2K to spend,) I may upgrade even though I don't really feel the need to ATM...

Umm... A New Mac Pro anyone????

How about that Midrange Mac that people want, that would be midpriced without a monitor built in. and you can upgrade graphics cards and such. get a nice 4-5 year use out of that.

That's in direct collision with Apple's interests.

Buy new every two refreshes, and then you are a good customer.

My MacPro1,1 ran the Mountain Lion beta with no trouble (except for the usual beta bugs). I put Lion back on it for now. I didn't have to hack it either.

That's really good to hear, maybe there is hope that the Mac Pro 1,1 isn't getting phased out.

The majority of iMac or MacPro/Book owner does NOT buy every two refreshes...it's more like every 4 years if that.

I tend to refresh when there's at least a 50% performance increase. I've got a 2009 MBP - so the new 2012 will be on my list. Saying that though - I've also got a 1st Gen Intel Mac Pro - that's still going strong. About as fast as my MBP at most things... Might sell that.. not sure at the moment.

Definitely do not upgrade every two refreshes though.

Agreed...the every two years is iOS devices which honestly do improve vastly every two cycles.

As for the MPro, mine is from 2007 and it's fine...but I wouldn't mind upgrading to a newer machine and selling this one...it's still a good machine but if they have a smaller form factor, I'm in.

My guess is new MPros with Retina individual displays in late summer with new MBPros with Retinas in April.

I'm pent-up, don't make me wait til June, just release the hounds already!

I'm surprised that so many consumers would be aware of the Mac refresh cycle. I don't see most consumers checking sites such as MR for when the next chipset is expected to roll out.

I am also waiting. I haven't bought a Mac since I got banged when I bought a Power PC based machine and then Apple switched to Intel a short time later. I have forgiven and I'm ready and waiting to purchase another one.
My niece got money for her birthday to buy her laptop for college and she is also waiting for the new line for her first Mac. I hope we hear something soon.

Waiting for new MacBook Pros so I can purchase my first ever Mac! So looking forward to ditching Windows 7 and laggy OSes forever.

If they discontinue MacPro line and focus all to laptops and iOS devices at least Apple can do is sell OS X to the PC world. We are waiting.

I am sure that 100 million new OS X users would join Apple community in about 6 months

I’m waiting for the ivy bridge so I can try it out my first Mac, which is going to be the MBA. As for iPhones, it seems to me that most of the buyers these days are either old folks that are new to the smartphone world or teenage girls. The iphones have gotten played out and boring lately, they made a mistake by not making a new model last year since now it just looks played out and stale.

Obviously doesn't have an iPhone or doesn't realize that it is the Apps that make the phone. iPhone 4S is by far the BEST LOOKING, MOST CAPABLE and SMOOTHEST WORKING smartphone on the market right today.

I don't need toys Apple, some people have work to do...

Apple is currently selling a heck of a lot of professional "tools", which are available from either their online store or Apple stores. Existing "tools" have at least 95% of the functionality their updated tools will have, and it's very likely you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in your productivity using them.

You shouldn't blame Apple for your impatience.

This has to be the most agonizing, aggravating wait for a refresh. We have had to rent Mac Pros for overflow, and it's hard to estimate the cost of lost productivity. I have insisted over the last year or so that we wait, but it's looking more and more like a mistake. Anyway, at this point, we've waited so long that to buy new machines now would be like giving up. Apple, you cruel mistress! *sobs*

You shouldn't blame Apple for your anything, never, ever.

I edited your comment a little, please dont get mad ;)

Scenario

2 year old MacPro breaks down or get stolen.

What you can get from Apple to replace it?

Yeah. The same 2 year old MacPro.....

Just give me a Mac Pro, that finally supports the world of AMD and Nvidia GPUs please. And allow the OS to permit my Mid 2010 MP to upgrade beyond the 5870 GPU. That is why I bought an "upgradeable" MP. So I could use all those slots. There is no need for the nearly two-year-old 5870 to be the top compatible GPU card with a Mac. And Nvidia should be an option too. The most frustrating part of the Mac system to me.

Agreed! It's what's making me want to just get an iMac. The lack of decent GPU upgrades really leaves me eying the iMac simply because all the other hardware on it is easy to upgrade/service. I figure, if the one thing I am REALLY going to want to upgrade on my Mac Pro isn't upgradeable . . . . then what's the point?

That is of course because I won't be spending too much time putting my internal HDDs into RAID5, dumping in a bunch of capture cards and whatnot anyhow.

While they often don't know what they're buying, even clueless customers take advice from people who know better. One tech-loving son will often control the decisions of whole families.
