OK, then. Lets see how the next decade goes because you are getting your way currently and I see the next 10 years societal change going in your favor.

I'm putting my money on us regretting the direction we are headed in.

Well, the West is heading towards equal rights, tolerance, anti discrimination, and religion in the west is beginning the start of a slow death.

A world full of more tolerant people not tied down by an ancient religion? Sounds great to me.

Its pretty clear to see its already happening.

I've been to France many many times, and despite more and more them ditching religion, I typically find them nicer and more tolerant than most Americans. Oh yeah, they have less crime to.

Something like 40% of the French are atheists or agnostics, and that was in 2006, that number keeps growing.

If only they had god...they would be in just as good shape as the good ole US A...wait...

Another sad blow against freedom and deeper intrusion of government into private business. Not to mention absurdly unconstitutional and more senseless overregulation that will further impede the business environment in America. Hopefully common sense will prevail in the House and put a stop to this nonsense and waste of time.

There is no freedom to discriminate.

2. Jesus, but Jesus did not come to the world to judge while he was in the world, he came to save mankind and not to judge. In Jesus second coming, he will be the judge and people will be accountable to him. It's easy for a person to falsely derive contradiction from this, but it isn't so. Separate issues relating to separate times

You assume that Christianity is the only religion on this planet, and the only religion that matters. Thank the gods you are so far from the truth.

It is also your naivety that believes that Jesus is the only one people will be held accountable to. Again, you can not be further from the truth.

I am accountable to four beings: my gods, my goddesses, my wife, and my family. If I choose to be accountable to Jesus, then so be it. If I don't, you are in no position to say that I am, nor does your religion override my beliefs. So do not impose yours on myself, or any other person. Our government forbids it, and your God and Saviour also forbid it.

BL.

You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. Well written. Bravo! :)

Where did I state taking anyone's freedom away? If you don't support equality among a democracy, then you do not believe in actual freedom. I support equality and believe if the United States wishes to show the world that we can be civilized, we need to pass laws protecting those who are discriminated against and cannot protect themselves. Permitting employers to reject qualified candidates based on their sexual orientation in addition to gender, race, physical handicaps, etc displays hypocrisy. This is not about religion, it is about intolerance. Stating homosexuality is a behaviour/act does neglect to take into account that it is a behaviour based on genetic disposition much like heterosexuality.

I'm afraid I didn't make myself clear.

I was actually arguing for you ... with you.

I was trying to say, that it shouldn't matter whether homosexuality is a genetic trait or a free choice, that there is no compelling reason to deny consenting adults the freedom to chose who they love.

Oy, apologies, comments and tone have become heated from some and it can be difficult to properly interpret comments in addition to keeping them straight (excuse the pun) :p

Virtually every culture around the world has affirmed that marriage is between one man and one woman since the beginning of civilization. Any brief study in anthropology or world history will demonstrate this.

If you actually think marriage was "invented" in the Bible please show us the verse.

Gen ch 2. Predates your other histories.

Really? This is what people are focusing on? Not the important part of separating religion and government?

Thank you.

What I have the biggest problem with—given your answers, which match my understanding of basic Christianity—is why a Christian would themselves attempt to judge, punish, shun or denigrate homosexuals.

Gays are responsible for their own salvation. Only God [Jesus] can judge them. So why is there this continued effort on the part of many Christians to try to condemn them ... or avoid them in the workplace ... or deny them civil rights?

Why can't you just let God do whatever God is going to do and live by Jesus's teachings: turn the other cheek ... love thy neighbor ... do to the least of these ... cast the first stone, etc.

It seems to me that there are too many Christians trying to play God, instead of being content to let Him handle things as He will. If they could just do that, I think everyone would be a lot better off.

The United States Senate has approved the anti-discrimination bill that Apple CEO Tim Cook endorsed in an Op-Ed earlier this week.

In a 64-32 vote, the Senate voted to pass the Employment Nondiscrimation Act today, sending the legislation to the U.S. House of Representatives where its future is uncertain. The bill adds gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals to the U.S.'s existing nondiscrimination law.

Tim Cook tweeted about the passing of the bill, saying:
From The New York Times:
In his op-ed, Tim Cook wrote that Apple has made it a point to create "a safe and welcoming workplace for all employees, regardless of their race, gender, nationality or sexual orientation", while also elaborating on employee rights to express identity in a working environment.

I totally agree with this bill and the stipulations of religion.

You can't force a christian church to hire someone who's lifestyle is totally different (and publicly so) from your teachings.

But if that company isn't religious, you shouldn't be able to discriminate against someone for how they choose to live their life. It's their choice and has NO BEARING on how they work.

I don't see why anyone would oppose that.

I want a bill that protects fat people. No doubt they're discriminated against. Why does everyone pander to gays?
.

Not sure about US, but in UK I have never seen overweight (fat) people being attacked for being overweight! And the place where I work is full of them too! Mind you, it's full of gay too so maybe in UK we are step ahead on the term of discrimination.

Amusingly, a Catholic scholar has found evidence of same-sex marriage in 100 CE Rome.

http://io9.com/gay-marriage-in-the-year-100-ad-951140108

Also, about 30 seconds and google lead to examples of same sex marriage in Ming Dynasty China, Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia, etc. The nice thing, someone even compiled these into a wiki article.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_same-sex_unions

So yes, affirmation that civilization has always made marriage between man and woman. </sarcasm>

Now that's what happened with lots of people I know, I was brought up in Catholic family, but realized it was all ******** by the time I was 10.

When I have kids, Ill be keeping away from all that silly stuff.

I won't. Atheism is stupid :)

----------

How would that even work?

And to the second part, really? Im pretty sure ive seen more anti progressive gay rights posts from you too. Can everyone like you just move to Russia or something please?

There's nothing anti-gay about opposing protected groups. I'm already upset enough that public universities and employers treat people differently based on the colors of their skins, as do private ones under pressure.

I assume you have facts to back up your enlightened comment? I really hope you don't tell your kids " Anyone who doesn't think exactly like our group is stupid and you should hate them! "

----------

At least if they do this for sexuality, I could become a closet straight XD

What would being a " closet straight " accomplish exactly?

Not the "hate them" part, just the "stupid" part.

Took it out to not cause confusion, but if they start giving extra protection to gay people (that is, harder to fire or something like how it is with certain ethnic groups now), I could pretend that I'm gay. But I wouldn't actually do that.

So telling your kids that anyone who thinks different than them, or their parents are stupid? Great way to raise a child. I'm sure that will get them far in the future America of reduced religion and tolerance. God forbid they ever set Foot in Europe, they won't stand a chance.

And where in this bill will gays get extra protection? Do you have a section of the bill that states that? With linked sources?

No, I was just trying to bait you into saying something hypocritical.

Not gonna happen! Sorry!

I will not allow my children to go to church or be involved in anything like that. I was forced to go to CCD and mass until I was 18, hated every second of that. Unless my children offer an actual argument of why they should go, they aren't.

However I would never tell my Children to call anyone stupid because they are a member of any religion, thats bad parenting and it creates a bad person.

It is illegal to refuse to hire someone based on sexual orientation. Although the bill does not state explicitly that gays will receive special protection, when you think about how it would be enforced and compare it to the similar laws related to race that we already have had in place for a long time, it should be apparent what will happen.

As it should be illegal to fire someone based on sexual orientation.

Proved my point, the bill does not state in any section that gays will get special protection over anyone else.

I highly doubt that will happen, tho we will see.

OM"G" - that means that my homosexual florist(...) friend in the US cannot refuse to hire a "straight Christian", even if he doesn't agree with that persons lifestyle or sexual choices/"behaviour"?!?! That's seriously bad, bad news.

It's really sad to see this many people on a technology blog not being advanced or intelligent enough to understand that 'being gay' isn't about dressing up for the carneval and having butts*x, but being just a person who feels and loves. There's hardly any difference!

It's society that makes A FEW behave a bit differently, but that goes for some goths too, as an example. You feel different, then you are bullied and don't fit in, so you revolt.

A gay man can still play football, and a gay woman can still be a ballerina.
A straight man can be a ballet dancer and a straight woman can play football.
