I cannot use third party blades on my Gillette shaver.
I cannot play an Xbox disc in my PS4.
Same thing with Apple App Store.
It’s not a monopoly.
It is a monopoly. There's no technical reason why apps could not be installed from somewhere else.

No it’s not, and I have stated examples how the same business model applies to other industries, and it’s not a monopoly. Go and read what monopoly means.
It is a monopoly on iOS.

Shaver makers are granted a monopoly by patent law.

Apple is a business so it's all about money.

So if the rules of THAT land said images of child abuse was fine, then you would expect Apple to support this and not remove any such images as they are ok in THAT country where they are selling their phones?

Contrary to what Tim says, I believe that Apple will do anything for enough money.

Are you buying iOS, or are you buying apps? App developers can choose to develop for iOS, Android, or make a web app. Apple doesn’t have a monopoly.
It has a monopoly on the distribution of of apps for iOS.

Android and BB10 don't have this because they are not as greedy.

Not really. Apple could’ve just gave in to US politicians to make a backdoor on iOS. That’s easy and saves money. They didn’t. In fact they invested further into secured enclave.

But suit yourself. Vote with your money.

But it was Chinese law? What would people prefer - Apple to stop selling devices in China? I'm sure shareholders would love Tim Cook for that.

HA! This is coming from senators that support the Patriot Act. A law the hurts the freedoms of every american and allows the US government the right to spy on us.
I think this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Different business model != not greedy.
Google’s main revenue come from ads.
BB10 is, dead.
And Jobs stated from day 1 of the original iPhone that devs can make web apps and it won’t have any restrictions.
No monopoly here.

But people already forgot about that. These politicians simply wanted to be relevant with today’s SJW kids, so they are making some noise about this, no matter how illogical it is.

Apple acts so righteous loving to put on an act of being the virtuous protector of personal rights as it stands up to governments around the world, but when it comes to standing up to the government of the largest cell phone market in the world, they cave in like a bunch of greedy little children. Their hypocrisy is pathetic

This isn't about appeasing shareholders, it's about doing what is right. Since when is upholding the law of a corrupt and oppressive government Apple's duty?

If selling iPhone in China mean bowing down to a government with an abysmal human rights record, then yes I would prefer they stop selling there.

That sums up our government

I see a lot of people making statements like this and it always strikes me as quite odd so I have a question: who do you think your "government" is made up of? Isn't it your brothers/sisters/parents/children/neighbours, basically?

I'd imagine Apple has zero control over this situation. They need to abide by different laws and regulations all over the world. I am guessing these senators expect Apple to not sell iPhones in China because of this? Or not follow the rules and be banned in the country? Not sure what business would make that decision.

Agreed - this is a political problem. You can't expect for profit companies to be the protectors of privacy and liberty when the governments controlling whether they get access to their markets actually tell them what to do.... (i.e. you've already lost when you're putting it on for profits to defend your freedoms)

These guys should do something at the political level if its they really want to affect things...and Sen Leahy is a good guy on privacy etc..., Sen Cruz on the other hand voted to let our ISP's monitor (and sell) our internet data shortly after the current administration got into office (1st big thing they did). JMHO...
