Yes, common folks are buying these products. Just not from Apple in great numbers. How can you say with a straight face that having 15% tablet share is good when that number was so much higher. Apple dominated the tablet market after ipad 1. They haven't adjusted. Just look at the ipads price and memory configuration; $500 at 16gig. Hasn't changed since the original release. And the ipad mini got a price increase in the face of capable devices costing half as much.
And don't let me start on Apple's computer business. The vast majority of people are cheapskates and Apple products are not even options to consider. No one wants to pay $1000 to check emails and browse the Internet.

Where did you get 15% iPad marketshare from ? :)

Chromebooks are the death of:
Privacy
Computing power
Offline use
PC Gaming
The major ones have oversized fonts, bold, red, and are underlined. What the chromebook does it submit everything you do to Google so they can give you targeted ads, and "better" search results(by removing a lot of links and promoting others. As a result, you only see >1% of what's on the web.) Honestly, the chromebook is the biggest step back in technoligy I've EVER seen in my life. What shocks me is people are buying them

Did you not see the huge growth in Windows tablets?

/s

Total windows market share has dropped to about 64%, although that includes the tablets, some of which don't run Windows. I doubt Microsoft will turn this around in 2014; Chromebooks clearly have amazing momentum (these figures don't reflect a full-year impact of the wave of the Haswell-models introduced near the end of the year, which radically improved the user experience). Windows could be down to a little above 50% next year, amazing. And this is the institutional channel, which is supposed to be more conservative and considerate of TCO: the channel which still doesn't touch Apple laptops despite how good they are. Microsoft could indeed be in surprising difficulty. A 64% share of this channel would have been inconceivable a few years ago.

See, this is a trolling post.... and this is the kind of post that spawns "apple sheep" comments and loathing.... and this is the kind of post that deserves that response.

Actually, a post that is viewed as a "trolling post" should just be ignored. Nice rant, though. :p

All statistics are baked. Period. If you think otherwise, you're a fool. Everyone always has an agenda. There is no such thing as pure statistic. Where do you think NPD makes money? You don't think they say what their customers want to hear? There have been articles that lay it out quite clearly that NPD and the likes take "contributions" for their work from "technology companies". IE, payoffs. Again, if you don't believe it, I feel sorry for you.

Not sure if you remember but ipads had 90% of the tablet market. It's down to 15%. And just because they have a backlog of $3000 plus computers means nothing. Just look at the surface 2. Reports indicate that it's selling out as well.

As a consumer, I couldn't care less how well or poorly the surface is selling. I only care that setting up and learning how to use a surface is one of the most laughable experiences I've had in a while.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that Apple can continue to offer an alternative to Microsoft - be it for tablets or PCs. I've seen the user experience according to Microsoft. It ain't pretty.

Because of the TCO concern, CIOs will evaluate new products like Chromebook for a year or two first, before deciding whether to proceed. Looking at the web traffic, it doesn't seem like Chromebook is gaining much traction yet.

It would be great if NPD identify what their specific commercial channels are, and how they derive their Apple numbers since Apple don't submit data to them.

On MS's side, CIOs will also be evaluating Windows RT in more detail now that Win 8.1 is out.

It is unclear where and how they will swing yet. These people move slowly.

All we know now is that the tablet form factor is indeed gaining traction after all these years.

EDIT: We also know Apple is claiming the high end PC segment at this point, which is away from all these noises. Neither MS nor Google has the necessary strength to combat Apple there. At the entry level, they may observe how MS fight with Google over the thin client segment while they continue to innovate on iPad.

Oh I knew that already. I was in that industry.

Cloud based devices like the Chromebook is the future. Companires like mine are already looking into this type of device. Easy to manage and secure. The people who cant believe in the numbers of Chromebook might need to take off the rose colored glasses. :)

What is your company, and what do your employees do on computers that would make Chromebooks an option?

I didn't realize that Dell, HP, Samsung, Sony, Lenovo, Toshiba and Asus were going out of business due to the lack of profits. I never looked upon these companies as "fly by night". Should I hope that my electric company makes a healthy profit at my expense too?
You haven't realized that Dell and HP (#1 and #2 in sales) both want to get out of the business of making PCs so they can make more money in consulting? Where have you been? They've both made that clear over the last year or so. The rest make even less profit and are one mis step from bankruptcy.

Yes, unless you've got alternate energy sources (solar, wind) you should most definitely hope that your electric company makes a healthy (not obscene) profit. If they don't you're going to find getting on the internet to be a difficult thing to do. Computers require electricity, and in a free market service/product providers that don't make healthy profits just stop providing them.

I was referring to 2013 which this article is about; Jan to Nov 2013

"The data in the report showed that the iPad accounted for 15.8% of personal computing device sales"

Then you are wrong. Considering all computing devices in the commercial channel, iPad was never at 99% marketshare. You may not be able to compare the numbers with other figures from the consumer channel too.

As a business, Apple will find its own balance of customer satisfaction, profit margin and marketshare. It will change along the way like all businesses do.

Still, the point remains that if Apple are making enormous profits and their customers are celebrating those profits, then those customers are celebrating the fact that Apple are charging them far more than the cost of manufacture/distribution.

In other words, those people are happy that they're paying $800 for a phone that cost $200 to make.

You can love using a product with out loving the price tag.

Remember, part of owning Apple for some is exactly that they are expensive and makes them feel special. They same with other products people buy.

Oh, you had to go to wallmart did you? Well, I have to go to a specialist store to buy my XXXX, they are not available in those kind of stores.

It would probably kill many people's hearts to see $199 apple tablets and the "great unwashed" covered in Apple Products.

What would they then have to buy to make them feel better than others?

Correction... the iPad is at roughly 30% down from 90%

But here's the kicker... Apple sold more iPads this year than last year.

Wha?

Here's why: Market share is calculated by looking at ALL products from ALL manufacturers in a particular market. As more manufacturers make more tablets... of course Apple's "share" will go down from when they were one of the only tablet manufacturers.

Apple sold 19 million iPads when they had 90% of the market... but they sold 70 million iPads with 30% of the market.

Which one of those figures do you think Apple cares about the most?

In 1921... Ford had 61% of the US automobile market. In 2012 they had 15%

See what happens when there are more manufacturers in a market?

There's your mistake.

This article only refers to "US commercial channel" sales... sales to businesses, government, education and other organizations.

It does NOT refer to the general market... which are the numbers we usually hear about. The iPad is at 29.6% at last count.

The golden years of the ipad.

Those are comparing iPad against other tablets in general. The figures in this article is comparing it against all work devices *in the US commercial channel only*.

Different comparison altogether. I knew you would bring those links up. That's why I already said they can't be compared.

That's also the infant age of iPad. I suspect companies can do more on iPad than the early days (besides web browsing and simple text entry). More competition can be good for Apple too you know.

No, in a deregulated "free market", this kind of thing happens:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_electricity_crisis
No, that was the predictable result of a deregulated monopoly. When you have a monopoly, you don't have a free market. That's a bit off point though: the key is that if you want to be able to get a product or service from a company in the future you'd better hope they make a profit now, regulated or not, free market or not.

Tons of apps that make tablets super useful to professionals in many fields, so if you think it's useless, it's only due to you failing to utilize it's full potential, and more of saying that you are useless, not the tablets.

Absolutely. The company I work at still does all our weekly planning in Excel spreadsheets which are then printed out and edited in meetings with pencils. Meanwhile, EVERYONE has an iPad and/or iPhone including Big Boss (except he has switched to droid due to his superior intellect and discriminating tastes - "I think I like it better" - oh really? iDevices work for EVERYONE else in the company, but we must all be idiots because we use iPads? Sure, Big Man). So we could all be using any number of VERY affordable solutions for project management, but no, every day I have to peck out a "daily update" email with some ******** percentage I make up for how far along I am in my project so Big Daddy can get a "snapshot" of what everyone is doing when all he'd have to do is open up an app and instantly see the progress of all projects. If droid is SO much damn better why aren't we all using Nexus tablets for project management? IT'S BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT. YOURE JUST A DUMBASS. Enjoy your BS 68% complete number and black and white Excel printout *******, meanwhile I'll be converting my coworkers handwritten quotes into multi page PDFs with my iPhone for you. Anyone looking for a talented designer?... Ugh.

Is that better than those who do the same with the $1000 MacBook Air?
The problem I see with chrome books is that they're attempting to be "good enough" but computers are still in their infancy, so what's just barely good enough now will not be good enough very soon. Better to get something like the Air which will be good enough even in a few years.
