"Yall were given free music and you complain. Bunch of whiners!"- says some people on here. Yet if Apple had did this with Justin Bieber or Nicki Minaj, those same people would be singing a different tune...or should I say autotune. Pun slightly intended

And the worst part about the whole U2-gate is that Tim and Bono were onstage talking about it, very excitedly, for several minutes.

That made my skin crawl. Apple's "coolness" factor went down significantly after that embarrassing scene.

It must have been quite a shock for the old windbags in U2 when they realized that most 'kids these days' do not care for that kind of music at all.

Let them listen to Justin Bieber!
It doesn't matter what you think of U2 really, they are great artists and not fake play-back studio type.

The best thing Bono made was Eve Hewson. I wouldn't mind Apple and Bono gifting her to me.

But it didn't automatically download. I had to go into purchases and then to recent purchases and download it from there. Why is he apologizing?

I'm
Wow, the first pop group to apologise for releasing an album. I love it!
Bono looks like someones geriatric grandfather who dressed up to look like Bono because he believed he was Bono. LOL

The interesting thing with this whole fiasco is that if U2 actually released an absolute killer of an album, a 'number one with a bullet' album, then we would have all been over the moon to have received something so awesome for free.
I mean all U2 had to do was give us a good album that they put their heart into and not some collection of bad, uninspired song ideas that all the record labels rejected.

The album should be renamed to "Songs That Made No Sense"

Or "Requiem For the Tired and Boring Opposite of Innocence"...

Whilst not a U2 fan and what I think of Bonio can't be shown here. Apple are the ones at fault.

It was their technology, their ecosystem, not U2's. I think U2's management deserve are slap on the back, they got $100m for a pile of crap and a few ad's.

As for innovation? Well unless it's how to avoid paying even more Tax, Tim really decked up on that one.

I noticed some bad U2 music in my library, but it said I had to click to download them from iCloud. I didn't do it. Not sure what all the fuss is about. Probably 99% of it is from Android users.
In the apology, Bono says that the group "got carried away" with themselves and were worried that songs they had spent two years working on "might not be heard."
Sorry, that's a pathetic apology if I ever saw one.

What? I'm not blaming Apple. She chose to have them do whatever they wanted because all she wants to do is get on Facebook, she could care less about the optimal experience. I used the roll eyes to express my feeling about her using the genius instead if learning to do it herself.

Sheesh.

OK... yes, see what you mean...

It is good for people to learn about the devices they intend to rely on. I've seen a lot of people hand over their computers and phones, etc. to someone else, and say here you set it up.

The problem with that, is that someone else agrees to the terms, and therefore the end user has no idea what to expect.

A better option, if someone feels that they need help, would be for them to ask that person to sit with them, and let the end user do the work, but be free to ask questions about what some setting does as they are stepped through it. Granted, that helper may not adequately explain it, but it might be a start.

I remember the days where getting a license meant learning about cars in addition to how to drive them... the thought was that if you understand why and how it works, you'll be a better and safer driver. For example, if you understood how a limited slip rear differential works, you'd be better prepared in the event you needed to perform an emergency maneuver on ice covered roads with a rear wheel drive car.

Likewise, if you drive a front wheel drive vehicle and have the same situation occur on ice, understanding the difference between front wheel drive and rear wheel drive characteristics would be beneficial so that you execute the right maneuver to avoid injury.

Today, we just hand people a car and say you use this to point the car and this to make it go, and here's your license. Then as people come to be unable to perform simple tasks with cars, we computerize the cars more to compensate for unskilled drivers.

People should understand what they use, and why and how it works. That doesn't mean they need to be a programmer. But, they should learn the basics and what the consequences of the various settings are.

Classy response given the situation.

Yeah it was pretty good. Quite well measured.
Would have been happier with;
Oops. Um. I'm sorry about that. I had this idea and we got carried away with ourselves.

For those who think this isn't a big deal at all and people are just whiners, let's imagine this hypothetical situation.

Let's say Apple purchased Snapchat for two billion dollars. In order to make that purchase worth it, they want all iPhone and iPad users to start using it. So, they push the app onto everyone's device.

Would this be a problem, or would you simply shrug it off and say it's not a big deal?

Not a good example, there are already unremovable apps forced on you in iOS.

Songs they spent two years on..

.... and I still don't get that whole blasting, clipping, raspy guitar sound at all. The opening of the Joey Ramone song sounds awful.

Even the Ramones themselves didn't have anything that bad.

I'm a fan of music....ALL MUSIC, I love that we have such a broad variety of music. I really appreciate the opportunity to listen to any new music for free.

I don't care if they put Zamfir master of the pan flute on my iphone, if I don't like it I will delete it, but I will probably listen to it first:)

Some like Taylor Swift, some like Kanye, others like Riverdance, or whatever...Great! I don't have any hate toward them or the fans. Music is awesome, Patsy Cline to Black Sabbath and Chuck D and all in between, oh and Zamfir rocks too:p

I thank Apple, Bono and U2, but in the end I don't think Apple gained anything from this, and wouldn't gain anything no matter what artist they did it with.

I'm not a U2 fan, although I don't find them offensive in anyway and their songs do remind me of college. That being said, the Songs Of Innocence download was a gift from Apple to their customers. There were no strings attached, nothing else to buy, and if you didn't like it/want it, you could just delete it from your device. I was disappointed by the backlash Apple received from this. All I can say is I hope the people that raised a stink about this "gift" don't treat their friends, colleagues and family the same way when they receive a gift they don't like and/or want.

They throw the unwanted gift;
a) On eBay, and buy somehting they really want with the money.
b) In a cupboard, but bring it out everytime said friend comes around.
c) Into their hearts and lives but secretly curse everytime they see it.
d) Say they don’t want it, and can they swap it for something else

Yes they do reject it as I suspect do you.

Because I had better things to do with the next 35 minutes of my life figuring out how to get that **** off my devices.

U2 can suck it, because they do.

You can easily remove it from your device. There is no way for me to unsee your stupid post.

No no no no! What the hell did they buy Dr.Dre for? Have Dre do all the music and get him to get Eminem to do some music. YES EMINEM I WANT APPLE TO WORK WITH HIM!!!!!!!!!!!

Eminem is as irrelevant today as U2 are.

Great in his day though, which was a decade ago.

Nothing really to apologize for, just reiterated the world is 50% numb skulls.

Partnership is fine. But pushing an album to people's devices is hardly an innovation.

Yes because we have an extensive history of 500 million albums given away for free, before.

Anything Apple does will be met by a mob of haters. Automatically.

If tomorrow Apple says "We are celebrating Jony Ive's birthday by giving all iTunes customers a free $10 iTunes credit, automatically deposited to your iTunes account balance!" Then 2 days later, there will be a huge MacRumors hate thread complaining how Apple is a stingy billions-dollar company and they should have given everyone's account at least $30 worth of iTunes credit because "they can afford it".

Likely not too far off. I can be harsh on Apple about a few things yet it's not just on Apple. I can dislike the actions of any company. I don't do blind hate for anything. For the other away around I will never understand how someone says they tried a Windows computer again to play a game and then say they bought a $300 laptop and it did not work got gaming. Well, no kidding, they are going to have to do a bit better then that.

That's going off into something else. As for this, is it pushy? Yes, it's really not a huge deal and not going to get on their case about it. Still having 16GB as standard is something I will get on ones case about. (NOT just Apple though the upgrades are cheaper with other companies)

Again, if you're concerned about bandwidth, then leave the default settings alone so that you can choose what is downloaded and when.

Really? How about Apple doesn't spam everyone with anything, especially crappy songs. This is a foul and tarnished Apple's image slightly.

Um, I doubt it.

Congratulations, America. You've forced an apology from someone who gave you something for FREE.

The price of the album has nothing to do with his worth, otherwise the album being free would mean it being worthless. It's value is subjective and depends on your taste: to me it might be trash, to you it might be a treasure. Feel free to have your treasure, but I don't want trash, even if free of charge...

The problem was not the album being offered for free: the problem was the users not having the option to say "thanks, but no thanks".
