What? I'm not blaming Apple. She chose to have them do whatever they wanted because all she wants to do is get on Facebook, she could care less about the optimal experience. I used the roll eyes to express my feeling about her using the genius instead if learning to do it herself.
Sheesh.
OK... yes, see what you mean...
It is good for people to learn about the devices they intend to rely on. I've seen a lot of people hand over their computers and phones, etc. to someone else, and say here you set it up.
The problem with that, is that someone else agrees to the terms, and therefore the end user has no idea what to expect.
A better option, if someone feels that they need help, would be for them to ask that person to sit with them, and let the end user do the work, but be free to ask questions about what some setting does as they are stepped through it. Granted, that helper may not adequately explain it, but it might be a start.
I remember the days where getting a license meant learning about cars in addition to how to drive them... the thought was that if you understand why and how it works, you'll be a better and safer driver. For example, if you understood how a limited slip rear differential works, you'd be better prepared in the event you needed to perform an emergency maneuver on ice covered roads with a rear wheel drive car.
Likewise, if you drive a front wheel drive vehicle and have the same situation occur on ice, understanding the difference between front wheel drive and rear wheel drive characteristics would be beneficial so that you execute the right maneuver to avoid injury.
Today, we just hand people a car and say you use this to point the car and this to make it go, and here's your license. Then as people come to be unable to perform simple tasks with cars, we computerize the cars more to compensate for unskilled drivers.
People should understand what they use, and why and how it works. That doesn't mean they need to be a programmer. But, they should learn the basics and what the consequences of the various settings are.
