Is there any way for uBar to take control of Finder windows so that it can be an actual replacement for the Dock. The visual of the Finder windows going to the Dock instead of moving to uBar is slighty jarring.

I know that I can have the Dock at the bottom of the screen but the Dock often wants to show itself when being less than careful there at the bottom of the screen.

It's a great application though - for the 10 minutes I tried it until I realized that the Dock is so central to all things OS X in relation to Finder and what else OS X can come up with.

Hi Allan,

uBar should automatically position the Dock to the right/auto-hidden on launch for you. uBar actually has safeguards to quit if it detects the Dock at the bottom to avoid that very situation, so I'm surprised that you say they were overlapping.

Indeed minimizing animates windows going to the Dock. There is a workaround for you though:

1) Quit uBar

2) Go to System Preferences and set Minimize windows using Scale effect.

3) Set Position on screen to Bottom and check Automatically hide and show the Dock.

4) Go to ~/Library/Preferences/ca.brawer.uBar.plist

and add the key allowDockOverlap
And set it to YES

5) Open the Terminal and increase the Dock Auto-Hide delay using this command:

defaults write com.apple.Dock autohide-delay -float 1000 && killall Dock

Note: to undo this in future, run this command:

defaults delete com.apple.Dock autohide-delay && killall Dock

6) Open uBar

At this point, you have the windows quickly minimizing downwards to uBar, and the Dock is always hidden.

I'll have to try this - right now. The setting of having the Finder minimize effect set to Scale is something I've already set :D

Thanks!

The 2.1.6 update is out, and fixes a major bug where apps that had windows undergoing "Restoration" by the system at launch would act dead (couldn't display windows).

Release notes for Version 2.1.6:
  • Fix: Apps with windows being restored at launch no longer display 0 windows

I've noticed this problem recently while using my Intuos... A lot of times I'll be working in a fullscreen app like Sketchbook or Pixelmator, and uBar will show up and get stuck until I switch into an other window and do the gesture to bring it up (which will prompt it to disappear).

Ok I'll operate in fullscreen when I can to see if I can reproduce it. Some questions: how many screens do you have, and can you discern any pattern? How often does it happen? Anything you can do to help figure out how to reproduce it at will helps.

I got it. It's not a uBar problem, it's Sketchbook. It's because of the way they coded the brush settings window. It has the three dots while some of the other panels only use the close button. They all show up as separate things in uBar.

So what was happening is that if I kept that box right at the edge of the screen, uBar will show up as normally, but it won't go away if I go back up that settings window. The easy fix is to keep it just above the edge so a little bit of the canvas is showing.

I use my MacBook Pro in clamshell mode with another screen. The lid is closed though...

Hi. I'm the developer of uBar.

uBar is a task bar for OS X 10.9+.

Version 2 is a total rewrite that I have just published outside of the Mac App Store (due to sandboxing requirements). It is a 4 week trial and costs $15 to purchase.

I know some of you love the Dock and consider this heresy, but there's a good body of opinion that the pre-Windows 8 task bar was the one thing Microsoft ever got right UI-wise :)

I'm actively developing it and would love to hear everyone's feedback and feature requests.

The latest version is 2.1.6

Current roadmap/todo:
  • Reordering of Favourites
  • Bookmarks in uBar menu
  • Finder tags in uBar menu
  • Handle image drops on Applications (currently accepts files)

Hi,

I have still not understood clearly what this APP does ? what is its utility ? what can it be used for ? :( Can you maybe in simpler terms explain what it does and maybe if you have made a demo video on what it does ? and how it works ? If you can out the link for that video here that would be great !!

P.S : OK I got one thing that it creates menu bar ! what else ?

Thanks !

Ahh got it, those windows must not really be part of the fullscreen mode, so going back over them doesn't let uBar know the fullscreen mode is back to not showing the menubar/ui.

I haven't had time to do a video yet, but I did do a good image preview for MacUpdate:

Thank you for doing the airplane with the spoon. :p

That gets me another credit, don't ya think? Maybe something like "Main Task Menu Bar Pilot: Hikaru Chekov"? ;)

Btw, I am no longer testing uBar 2000 as I reverted back to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on my MacBook, since OS X 10.10 Yosemite was a bit slow, but sadly even OS X 10.9 Mavericks was less stable than that beta.
Maybe once OS X 10.10 Yosemite is okay again and I try it on my Hackintosh, since I like the app.

Ahh, decisions, decisions. Off to Vulcan.

Sad, my 4 week trial expired.....
Happy with ubar tho, So buying it @ next paycheque :D It's a bit expensive imo, but I do enjoy it.
Keep up the good work!

How is it Different from the Native Macbook Dock ?

Ok with some inhibitions I used the APP on a Friends MAC, I dont have one, sold off my last one. Planning to buy a new the coming week.

So my question and initial impressions are yes it works as promised it creates a menu bar, task bar on the bottom of your screen shows all the open app and whatever is open on your MAC.

I have 2 questions:

1. The Mac "Dock" already shows the running apps on your Mac so how is this different ? perhaps the presentation is different, maybe like a windows menu bar and task bar like. But other than that ? what is the biggest USP of this APP ?? still cant get it !! When even the Native Dock on the Macbook does it, and does it perfectly.

2. My second question is, after I have installed this APP, and after I have made the dock hidden. When I for some reason have to do all fingers swipe in and swipe out, the dock again re-appears on the dock position. That can be irritating as again I have to manually try to make the dock hidden. How is this problem tacled ?

The DevelopeR or the actual users if any of you can comment on this.

Just downloaded it.
Having a task bar back isnt has awesome as I thought it would be.

OMG I CLICK THE TIME AND THE CALENDAR APP OPENS! DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY GODDAMN TIMES I'VE CLICKED THE CLOCK AND I DIDNT GET THE CALENDAR? Ideally it would come up just like windows, but I guess the full calendar app opening up is good enough.

The 2.1.8 update is out, with a small but nifty feature: ungrouped windows that are document-based (that is, have what is known as a proxy icon) now show the icon associated with that file-type with the app icon in the corner instead of just the application icon. You can set the Window grouping preference to Automatic or Never to check it out.

Release notes for Version 2.1.8:
  • Feature: Ungrouped windows now use document icon when applicable

Good idea! I added a mini Calendar to the road map for when the clock area is clicked (road map is on first post).

Yup uBar does download notifications to replace the little file animation going into the dock when you have the Download folder there. You can disable them in Preferences.

Dermeister you are the master.

3 things:
Shortcuts: There is no visual cue for when I click them so Im left wondering for 2 seconds if it opened. On the dock the icon bounces up and down (tacky). If i remember right, on windows machine the icon could depress, or there would be some quick visual cue to let me know the program is working. On a side note, to my surprise OSX is damn slow. I thought it was fast, but no, its as slow as its always been opening up programs.

Clicking on the program on the bottom of the bar minimizes Finder, but it does not minimize any other program. The windows task bar minimized programs when I clicked on them in the task bar but uBar doesnt and to be fair neither does the dock.

Finally, if I have multiple tabs, for a browser, or windows open for a browser or program, like a messenger program, there is not mouse-over prompt or click to get a preview of what specific window I can click on. If I click on the program I get the most recent window, and not even both windows coming to the front.

Edit: Judging from your screen shot it looks like I can select a specific window from a program especially with the programs with an inverted triangle on them. However I cannot replicate that.

Dang, now i know why I liked windows so much. Had better file manager too. /rant

Why thank you :)

You're right I should add visual feedback to the favourites when they are clicked. Adding to the short-list. No bouncing, will either be the icon darkening for a sec or a surrounding round rect for a sec. Will probably be the latter since mouse would be hiding the icon.

For the minimizing, here is how it works: If the tile/button is grouped (an app), clicking it makes it open it's default window. If the app has a window, it gets minimized by clicking it. If you have ungrouped tiles (a window), clicking a window should bring it to front, and clicking again should minimize it.

I am actually planning a window preview mode instead of the window lists so that will help.

As for file managing, I do want to tackle doing one in the future as a companion app to uBar. I get tons of awesome feedback via email, and that has been a recurring suggestion. In fact I will be adding a Send Feedback item to the uBar menu to directly start an email as that should make it even easier for people. The file manager I do will be the file manager I wish I had, but I definitely want to hear about what people want before I start it (especially power-users), so I appreciate any suggestions you have on that as well.

By the way here is a little manual on the less-known features of uBar I have been typing up. Will post it somewhere eventually, but it could be useful to people here even unfinished:

Adding and Removing Rows
To increase or decrease the number of rows, drag the very edge of uBar up or down. The maximum number of rows is five.

Favorites
To an open application to the Favorites Area, control or right-click it and select “Add to Favorites”. To add any file, folder, or application, you can control or right-click it in the Finder and select “Services” and then “Add to uBar Favorites”. To enable this service, check it via “System Preferences>Keyboard>Shortcuts>Services”.

Window Grouping
The Window Grouping feature in the Preferences window allows you to determine whether uBar will group windows belonging to the same application together. There are three settings: Always, Never, and Automatic. Automatic means the windows are ungrouped unless there is not enough room, in which case windows will automatically group together.

Activity Mode
Hold the Ctrl key on your Keyboard to activate Activity Mode. Applications will show % CPU utilization and Memory Usage.

Size
The size setting in the Preferences window allows you to select three options: Automatic, Large, and Small. The advantage of Automatic is that uBar will automatically adapt itself to your screen size. A primary screen with a width of 1600 or more pixels will result in a Large uBar, while anything smaller will result in a Small uBar. This is especially useful with laptops.

Windows list, preview, I dont care. Im not getting anything right now. ㅠㅠ

The OS X dock minimizes app windows (to the dock) for me when they are on screen and I click on the dock icon.
