I dont think the drivers are going to beg you for anything. It's in the App just like the Lyft app.

And the Lyft app offers tipping as well always has.

And Lyft lets drivers earn back their commission that is normally taken out if they drive a certain number of hours per week. Honestly I think that's the best incentive you can offer drivers.

Ugh great. Are the drivers able to see who tipped and who didn’t? Otherwise this is basically going be mandatory if you don’t want your rider rating to tank.

No, it'll probably be just like on the Lyft app where the ride total isn't associated to a rider name/ account, so kind of anonymous unless you're a driver who is keeping a very meticulous log of every trip.

Tip culture is basically a bribe by a different name. I hate tipping especially when I know they're not getting a fair wage. You tip at a restaurant but not at mcdonalds? When last in America our change wasn't returned, they didn't even let us give it back as a tip! I find that offensive as it wasn't a small amount of change either and the service was borderline horrific. I don't really care if it's cultural, ask for the payment you need and you avoid all that ambiguity. Build the gratuity into the price and state it upfront. If UBER wants to add tipping for people anonymously then thats fine though.

Too late. I deleted the app long ago. The privacy concerns were enough for me. Couple that with their absolutely horrible, super stereotypical SF tech culture and mishandling of several sexual harassment cases? Yeah no. Lyft, car2go, and ReachNow or bust.

so now i'm going to get charged when the drivers go to the wrong pickup location and I have to call them and find out where the hell they parked?

That would be true in Europe which doesn't really have a tipping culture. A tip is surprising and not at all expected.

In the US, a tip is almost mandatory. You feel like an asshat if you don't tip because you're guilted in knowing that they don't make enough and tipping is to be expected as a 'courtesy'.

It's very cultural.

My favorite are the resturants with mandatory 18% gratuity that get added to the bill automatically, even if you get crap service.

Tipping is getting ridiculous. Even places like Coffee shops are asking for tips on the screen when you charge your card.

I wouldn't know mate, I live in the UK... but that honestly sounds terrible. :(

There's a rider movement here in Portland to never give the rider above a four star rating if they didn't tip.

Done with Uber. I'll just buy a car.

One of the great things about Uber was knowing that when you stepped out of the car it was all done. There was no expectation of a tip - now there will be.

no thanks. tipping should be banned.
yes i get it, you work in a service industry and you don't get paid enough. but if your employers charged more and passed the profits onto you, we wouldn't need to figure out this whole tipping ********.
You won't tip because you think employers should pay more? Meanwhile, those employees still aren't being paid more, despite your stance on the matter. I'll continue tipping for those that deserve it. Sometimes I'll even tip people just for, you know, doing a good job at something.

Having said that, I do agree that employers should just pay more money to their employees. Having to rely on tips to make ends meet is crappy.

Tip-culture is arbitrary and unfair. A good example is that I and an American I know was at McDonald's and the cashier said she would bring out our meals because it would take some minutes. He always warmly talked about tipping. Well the meals arrived and of course he did not tip. Confronted with this there was silence "erm, hem, ahm" and more silence. He simply could not explain.
Since when does anyone tip at McDonald's except for maybe a cup up front? Also, constantly asking for or hinting at a tip is a surefire way to not get a tip.

A Tip at McDonalds? Avoid the place!:)

I think this is a good change. I like to tip drivers that provided good service, but I don't want the hassle of cash. This seems like a convenient way to do it.

BTW, to my knowledge Uber drivers can only rate you right after the trip (any Uber drivers correct me if I'm wrong), while you can rate and tip the driver later. If you're worried about "revenge ratings", just wait a while before rating (and not tipping) them.

I have never tipped them with cash so far and have a straight 5.0 rating (although admittedly I don't use them very often). Just be polite, don't mess up their car, and don't waste their time by letting them wait at pickup.

Well i’m sorry to see that you guys took something positive and slapped on the negative. In an ideal world the top would be on top of base pay (at or above minimum wage) but it’s not.

My opinion on tips remains the same though.

I think it has more to do with everyone's seething hatred of Uber and their ****** practices than the actual implementation into the app. Also, some people are apparently very much against tipping.

The tip will automatically be taxed now since it will be reported through Uber.

I used to deliver pizza in the 90s and would easily make $100 per day in tips. It was up to me to report that income either nightly or when I filed my taxes. I did so when I filed, otherwise my paycheck would be $0 every two weeks.

This will greatly reduce the Uber drivers take home pay.

Get a car. Uber is actually not much cheaper per mile, if not more expensive on short distance trips, than owning a good reliable car anyway. There's also the non-tangible benefit of on demand transportation and no BS. I used to be transit-only rider that hated everything car until actually got one out of necessity for school and now I understand the hype.

I like using services like Uber or Lyft when I need it though.

Yeah because Uber wants to make money. Doesn’t everyone lol. If you ran the company you’d try to save hours too. And I worked in a restaurant, I appreciated tips very much. I made minimum wage too, so apparently I won’t be qualified to talk because my pay wasn’t cut like everyone else’s. (insert b.s. response about it being anecdotal or whatever canned crap)
[doublepost=1498000262][/doublepost]And another thing... Pick a side:

- Generosity and caring
OR
- I hate tips

Not both.

Drivers only go where the riders input the address for them to go, or drop a pin in the wrong place.
Drivers aren't mind readers, they don't just know where your located. This is why I could never do a job dealing with the public.
Way to many ****** entitled people.

Well since the app tracks your location 24/7 they should know!! All jokes aside, no, they don’t “just know”. In regards to charging people for waiting, i’m down with that. People screw around too much and it slows everyone down.

But that had nothing to with the drivers, as the person I quoted suggested.
Also do you not think other apps know all about you. Apple knows a whole lot more than they would ever admit.

Tipping is a ridiculous system. I think it's disgusting guilting customers into paying companies' employee's wages. When I order a service or product, I expect to be paying for everything. I don't expect to then have to pay extra for their employee's service.
You forgot the part where Uber drivers are actually "independent contractors". So take that as you will. I choose to not use Uber at all, myself. But remember their every expense is theirs alone, and Uber is giving them *nothing* but access to their system.

And while you may "expect to be paying for everything" -- until the world catches up with that thinking, you should not be stiffing working people who are caught in a **** system. I agree with you that every server, driver, etc should be paid a livable wage, 100%. But sadly we do not yet live in that world.
