I like it. It looks very clean and professional and would not mind having a live demo with it to see if I could see myself using it in every day use. Looks like an Android experience that I would enjoy.

I don't like all kinds of crazy flashy crap saying "ooo look what I can do!" IMO it seems like that's what most Android devices do.

Because people like new stuff and get tired of the same ole same.

Had a 3G,currently have an iPhone 4,ipad2, 3&4 gen iPod touch and I'm really thinking about getting a SIII just to try something new. I don't have hundreds & hundreds of apps so switching wont be much of a problem for me.

ETA the phone is a little busy but nothing a person couldn't handle. It's 2012 we shouldn't have to dumb everything down.

It's a lot if UI just for UI sake. For day to day use, I will take simple and "boring" any day.

all that stuff is just unnecessary. like someone else said, the only thing i liked was the wifi toggle and so forth being in the pull down menu

Looks nice, something different. Some things I didn't understand, like what was the point of swiping through pictures on the lockscreen and adding dividers on a page. But some of the quick access features I liked such as weather.

You guys can keep downranking all the posts that don't align with your "widgets and doo-dads everywhere" meme but the reality is the consumer is speaking loudly.

Android has tons of vendors and is on every carrier yet they cannot seem to vanquish Apple ..the company that supposedly sells high priced toys.

Minimalism works! I actually like this Sharp phone's take on Android but it's just not going to translate across the widest sector of consumers that really want the proper blend of sophistication and simplicity. This isn't it.

What does "vanquishing" have to do with anything? OS X most obviously does not have a majority market share, but that doesn't mean it's in any way bad. And by that same logic, that doesn't automatically mean that Windows is superior.

Even if market share were the primary figure to toss around, Android shipped 59.0% of all smartphones in Q1 2012, and iOS at 23.0%. Note: I am not saying that marketshare means a superior OS, as obviously Android is on multiple phones.

Simple and boring huh. Enjoy the flip phone.
I'm not saying the UI has to serve me breakfast in bed but for me personally. I have a couple a of iOS devices and they all look the same. I just feel for me personally it may be a time for a change for me.

That's why I'm thinking the SIII. If I decide to reup my contract. I miss the 2012,2013 iphone and by 2014 it should be time for Apple new revision.

"The average user wouldn't be able to understand it."

This is why iOS will likely remain a dull-as-dirt icon grid. Seriously folks, just because your dear old mum can't understand how to move a widget doesn't mean iPhones can't at least make them an option. Yeesh.

"but it's just not going to translate across the widest sector of consumers that really want the proper blend of sophistication and simplicity."

McDonald's commands a huge portion of restaurant sales because they appeal to a "wide sector of consumers", serving relatively inexpensive food of marginal quality at a fast pace. Their command on the market doesn't mean they're making the best product they can, they've just devised a great way to push it. Apple could do a lot more with iOS, but their unchanged design is getting really, really tired.

But dear old mums buy a lot of phones.

It's not just mum. When the animator who made the actual promo video has trouble showing this as a positive thing, you know there's something wrong.

Look at this wonderful Tetris-like game that will lead to vast acreage of empty space you have to scroll past:

If the people trying to show this in the best possible light even have trouble, imagine just how poorly "mum" will do.

I'm not opposed to widgets, but some thought has to go into how people will use them. This system seems to prioritize "looking cool" over any sort of usability.

Another example:

Look, I hope the iPhone does add widgets and all sorts of other cool new things. I don't want it to stay the same forever any more than you do. But drooling over this doofy design just because it has those things added in a silly way doesn't help. I'd rather wish for them to be added in a useful way.

They'll figure it out just like they do with every other new tech device...

I'm not saying you have to go full steam ahead like the phone in the video but this we're going to dumb it down because mum can't use it shouldn't be an exuse. Technology moves. You move with it or get left behind.

Honestly seems like mum is busy buying the kids a phone and kids today are ADD, they're going to get bored soon with the same ole same

Actually it'll be Geeks that have to switch their ways and either adapt or move to another platform.

Geeks like to exploit their OCD tendencies ....I get that. But often we do things in the name of geekdom that just don't make sense.

Much like the GUI was panned early on. Real computer people used a Terminal GD'it! But eventually the siren call of "easy computing" made GUI the can't miss feature. The rest is History.

Here is the real reason why you're not going to see a lot of work or success in revamping mobile UI.

It's dead

Siri and other voice enabled technologies are going to render moot any substantial work on mobile UI and perhaps even desktop UI. Why? Because the masses will want it and use it. And us Geeks will have to follow along.

I don't see Siri or SVoice taking over the moblie UI any time soon. That stuff has been around for a while and actually it still has the same voice from way back on Microsoft Voice Control. It's nice and would be ok for hands free while driving though.

As for ease of use. Since people like to mention the weather widget. I can look at my lockscreen for weather than I can press the button, ask siri/svoice for it and wait for a reply.

This is just extremely ugly, even WP7 looks better than this, they've made it complicated, and there isn't a simple or minimal anything anywhere.

Uhm no thanks, looks like crap, but looks better than windows 8 metro ui. However I still prefer the simple, minimalistic approach of iOS. Nothing beats it's intuitive and elegance.

Talk about a misleading post. Here's is the page BEFORE the video moves one of the widgets to illustrate the fact that they are easily moveable.

And the lock screen comment. Are you serious? Complaining that you can only see one stock ticker, from the lock screen? Here, the lock screen not only gives you access to the date, time, camera, media player, and notifications, but it also gives you easy access to the phone dialer, email, weather, photos, widgets, and stock tickers.

I prefer a simple, easy to use interface. My android phone is down to one hone screen. With one dock and one line of folders. I only run two Widgets, digital clock and Play Music. The most cluttered place on my phone is the notification drawer. I have wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, accelerometer, and airplane mode toggles.

I like having all that I need on one home screen. And I can access all of my settings from the notification drawer, which also contains weather. I rarely have to use an app that is not in a folder. This is one of the main reasons I switched from iOS. I hated having to scroll through pages and pages just to find an app. (This was before the introduction of folders in iOS.)

I have since moved onto a full android ecosystem, phone + tablet + media player, and have no reason to switch back.

But there is one thing that will stay the same. I will never give up Mac os x until I'm forced to. Way to much going on in Windows 8, Linux is my backup plan if apple goes south (or puts all their eggs in one basket with iDevices)

I complain that the method for moving widgets is badly designed and your answer is "yes, but you can move them?"

That's not really an answer. In fact, it's basically just you telling me half of my own complaint and then stopping.

Yes, I am serious. What's the point of showing me an animation of a widget that's harder to use than an actual app? As I said, they're just showing stuff that looks cool but isn't actually helpful. If, as you say, there are better ways to use the lock screen, they probably should have showed that instead.

Your first example does display clutter, agreed. Your second example is more a matter of personal preference -- there are plenty of places in iOS where you have to over-navigate to reach an often-used feature. I'll give you one: disabling or enabling bluetooth. It's a little easier in iOS6, but not much. Another ugly: Safari on iOS. Mozilla is right, it's not a fun experience and feels like a desktop app squeezed into a touchscreen interface.

I believe the point many here are trying to make is not that the OP's video is a fantastic OMG perfect UI... but it represents progress, and shows that you can go far beyond a mere icon grid, presenting information or adding functionality in various ways that iOS is currently lacking.

The lock screen looked cool. Except I still find it stupid to have stocks and weather on the lock screen... just a waste of battery life.

Do you really leave your phone "on" all the time on the lock screen?

I'm sorry, but my office is a bunker and I would love to see more than just the date, time and an option for the camera or to unlock when I press the "on" button.

Adding weather (or the screen showing the weather like Android has done so well from the beginning), stocks, etc. would be a nice option.

Neat idea but the whole thing looks ugly. What is with the big grey frames around all the icons? And all of it sitting on a background of the same grey? Ugh, no.

And I feel like I would get lost with the way they showed off the widgets. Sure, nice that you can easily delete them but welcome to Android.

I thought the lock screen was a neat idea but it doesn't seem to unlock with a swipe. Rather, you tap the lock. Which means that you can easily accidentally unlock the phone, then accidentally delete a widget because it is so easy to do! Whoops!

I don't need a massive UI overhaul in iOS. What they have now is fine. If Apple comes up with a better idea at some point, then I hope they implement it. In the mean time, no reason to change for the sake of changing.
