It's not just mum. When the animator who made the actual promo video has trouble showing this as a positive thing, you know there's something wrong.

Look at this wonderful Tetris-like game that will lead to vast acreage of empty space you have to scroll past:

If the people trying to show this in the best possible light even have trouble, imagine just how poorly "mum" will do.

I'm not opposed to widgets, but some thought has to go into how people will use them. This system seems to prioritize "looking cool" over any sort of usability.

Another example:

Look, I hope the iPhone does add widgets and all sorts of other cool new things. I don't want it to stay the same forever any more than you do. But drooling over this doofy design just because it has those things added in a silly way doesn't help. I'd rather wish for them to be added in a useful way.

Totally agree with you.

I think it's pretty cool but is a bit cluttered. There can totally be a happy medium between the two (that and iOS). iOS is getting pretty bland and boring and starting to look a bit dated. Yeah iOs is easy, functional, user friendly but it is also cluttered. I'd say that my home screens are cluttered with apps, and folders that just sit there. I have apps that I don't use everyday but need them when I travel, look for something new, etc. And we all know the notifications finally got better but they aren't the greatest and the lock screen is a total waste of space. I have used intelliscreenx in the past and it shows how much real estate can be used and not kill the battery and it's not all about having "live weather".

I think the iPhone is in need of some kind of overhaul. Doesn't have to be something that crazy but I do think they need to start paying attention to what else is out there and at least giving people the options of some of the functional enhancements that we all know the iPhone could easily handle and Apple would probably make pretty slick.

I complain that the method for moving widgets is badly designed and your answer is "yes, but you can move them?"

That's not really an answer. In fact, it's basically just you telling me half of my own complaint and then stopping.

So widgets should all take up the same amount of space even if it's not required, just so it's all "equal"? Your complaint wasn't about moving the widgets, it was about how the widgets are differently sized, and if one were to choose to have an empty area, that would be "inefficient." That's hardly a "flaw" in a UI.

Yes, I am serious. What's the point of showing me an animation of a widget that's harder to use than an actual app? As I said, they're just showing stuff that looks cool but isn't actually helpful. If, as you say, there are better ways to use the lock screen, they probably should have showed that instead.

That's hardly "harder to use than the actual app." I don't have to unlock my phone to take a quick glance at my top stock ticker. Sure seems much easier than unlocking the phone, opening the stocks app, and then being able to check up on it. It's not supposed to replace the actual app or be better than the app; it is supposed to give quick and easy access to a piece of information that one might want to check up on.

We must be watching a different video. That sure didn't look like a choice to me.

Simple and boring huh. Enjoy the flip phone.
I'm not saying the UI has to serve me breakfast in bed but for me personally. I have a couple a of iOS devices and they all look the same. I just feel for me personally it may be a time for a change for me.

That's why I'm thinking the SIII. If I decide to reup my contract. I miss the 2012,2013 iphone and by 2014 it should be time for Apple new revision.

Again, I do not live on the home screen of my device. When I unlock my phone Its already in the email client. I then will pull down the notification shade to see my latest updates.

Live tiles would be useless to me. Pretty home screens with the latest weather would be absolutely useless to me. I don't need animated wallpaper, or the latest news widgets (If I want the news I will open my news apps).

Windows phone 7 has the same thing with the tiles. I agree it doesn't look good sometimes, but if you manage the spaces right you can get a very unique and simple UI

The Windows 7 homescreen (and Windows 8) makes me feel like I'm going to have an epileptic seizure. Its mostly movement for movement sake.

The Android home screen looks pretty much the same, they've just put a different wallpaper and default icons on the first screen. Consistency is good; change for the sake of change isn't.

"To create something that's genuinely new, you have to start again"
- Jony Ive, Senior Vice President of Apple's Design team

I think that if Apple puts their heads together they can make something far greater than what iOS 6 currently looks like. I agree, consistency is good but if you're too afraid to make a change, you'll never get anything accomplished.

Right now, iOS looks great. It's easy to use with a consistent look across the different pages. But there are also a lot of things that could be done to improve it. Maybe they can improve it and still keep the same UI-look but I think an all-new design would be a great thing. Not only would it give a whole new look and feel to all of our iOS-devices but it would also open up the door for Apple to include features(or rework features) in ways they could never do now because of how the current UI looks.

I think the quote by Jony Ive hits my point spot on. The new rMBP is a new design, a thinner design, a more slimmed design - but it's still kind of the same so it's familiar to those who are used to MBP's in the past.

A complete overhaul of how iOS looks could be done in much the same way. New design, sleaker, easier, more features and usability - but still kind of the same so it's familiar to those who have already used iOS in the past.
