Standard HDD configs are a 2.5-in 5400rpm drive for the 21-in and a 3.5-in 7200rpm drive for the 27-in model.

If you upgrade to Fusion, Apple sticks a 128GB SSD blade into the slot waiting for it. The HDD and SSD are then 'fused' into one 1.128TB or 3.128TB drive by software.

The base 21-in model doesn't have the slot for an SSD so can't be upgraded.

Can't wait

Awesome news on the 7200rpm fusion drive. Yay!

Ordered a base-model 27" with fusion drive on the first day (in the evening). 3-4 weeks when ordering, still the same. (2-4 Jan)

People, why dont you read what its written on Apple's specs site: http://www.apple.com/imac/specs/

- Default configuratin: 1TB (7200-rpm) hard drive (this is the default).
- Custom configuration: Configurable to 3TB hard drive (which is also a 7200-rpm).
- Fusion configuration: 1TB or 3TB Fusion Drive, (which is also a 7200-rpm).

What apple is saying is, that the disks are 7200-rpm but only mentions it for the default configuration as its obvios that any custom configs for different combination will remain with the same HD disk speeds, if not it would have been specified.

Hope this clears up any doubts!

What a machine!! Congrats and enjoy when it arrives. Out of interest, why did you opt for i7 processor (as did I by the way but struggling with justifying it)

Partly cause I get a HE discount and had saved my £, therefore since I could I did! Also I didn't tell my wife about that bit!

Replacing an early 2009 17-inch MacBook Pro. First iMac, second Mac. Can’t wait for it to arrive !

I've just filled in the customer survey they e-mailed.

Expressed considerable dissatisfaction at not being able to give my daughter her Xmas present (27" iMac) until perhaps about 2 weeks after Xmas.

I ticked the box allowing them to contact me to discuss my answers.

It will be interesting to see if they pick up on it and contact me....and what they say.

What are the chances of walking into a UK Apple shop on the day of the 27" release and actually getting one?

Just wondering as I need 2 x base models and haven't ordered online...

Trouble is no one knows the official release date, I had an online chat with one of the apple people and they had no idea when they will be available to purchase in the shop.

Pretty good for base model if you get there early enough. The highest volume machine is the 13" MacBook Pro and even when the retina launched you could walk in and get one from most UK stores. 27" iMac will not be a high volume product

Thanks for the reply, that sounds promising :)

On the date it's released, I'll rock up early and see if I can get lucky. Is there a limit per person or can I buy two?

I don't imagine there would be. They introduced a limit for iOS device launches because people were turning up with wads of cash buying armfuls of the stuff and selling them on eBay particularly to overseas people before launch day in their territories, obviously for a significant mark-up. A 27" iMac would be less attractive for such activity...

Ordered at 10:30am on the Friday launch day, £1792 inc VAT via edu discount through a friend. Excited as first Mac.

Placed my order on the 3rd for a BTO (i7, 1TB Fusion, 680MX). Order status has remained the same since then. 3-4 weeks, delivered 07 Jan - 11 Jan.

Located in Sweden. I'm hoping to get it a bit before that, but even if I don't, I'll be happy regardless. It'll be a great machine which will last me for a while :)
