I love all these comments that are so far from the mark! The UK does have a lot of problems- but they are as nothing compared to what’s happening inside the US.

The UK government can **** off. I love being able to post that because I live in the US.
Please! Don't make me laugh! Freedom is disappearing fast in the US. In the UK you can still tell the government to f*** off. Noticeably we don't have any soldiers roaming round our big cities, the government is still working and our generals don't have to undergo lie detector tests.

That doesn’t track at all. This will be derailed because Apple wants to profit from iCloud storage?

Sure it’s the way it is.
I don’t think the average Apple user is even aware of advance data protection and even when made aware I doubt they’d mind.

I’m turned off iCloud for 6 months when it was first announced but have just come back because it’s so convenient for syncing.

This article does make me want to change my mind again but I’ll probably stick with it.

Every government around the world has the right to protect it's citizens from foreign and domestic threats. How that government goes about it is between the government and it's people, it is not for large corporations to make that decision.

If the UK government feel having access to icloud will allow it to protect it's citizens from foreign and domestic threats then they have every right to ask, even to point of demanding that a company that provides devices and systems that have high end encryption on them give the government such access. Apple allows law abiding citizens to use it's devices and system but at the same time they also allow criminals to do the same and when these criminals do bad things and the authorities need to access the criminals Apple devices for evidence and to further there investigations into the criminals activity Apple turns around and basically says 'f..off'.

Law abiding citizens have nothing to fear but if they do and they find their government has been abusing it's power then that is an issue between the countries people and it's government to sort out. It is not for a company to decide what is in the best interests of a countries people because a company's interest only lies with it's shareholders and to make money for the shareholders.

I would hope the UK government continues it's pressure on Apple. The ONLY way Apple is going to win here is if they decide to pull out of the UK, the UK government will be scared they will lose ten's of thousands of voters because those voters will be extremely angry at not being able to use their Apple device/Apple service.

A simple response to all the nonsense and misinformation from the USA and the indigenous malcontents; UK citizens don't have Trump militia on our streets and the stupidocracy model of government will not be imported here.

I used to think living in the UK could be cool, but with their surveillance state, penalizing people for saying things in social media, and other insanity I no longer think that. Evidently living in the UK means the government deserves access to everything about you. I am not one who believes in the "If you aren't doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about" argument.
You should have been over here for the 80’s. That was one hell of a ride. 😀

a) but much of it is not centralised – an important distinction; there's no concerted, joined-up effort to have all manner of CCTV systems instantly accessible to everyone and his dog. A clue is in the meaning of the acronym…

b) these days, large numbers of people have willingly added cameras to their front doors, across the land. This has generated something of a 'vigilante' attitude in online community forums
I was about to say that the companies offering home security cameras are creating their own network that users do not fully control - and you have to pay a subscription for the privilege of providing them your data about when you, your family, your friends, delivery drivers, and passers-by come and go.

There isn’t any massacre. I know this will be downvoted. The tank man was not killed. Tank can easily run this guy over but they didn’t.
Not sure if serious - if not, it is poor joke; if so, then you need to review your understanding of history. Lots of eyewitness accounts and footage...

But yes, at least the PRC tank crew had the military discipline not to shoot this unarmed man. Alas, if that kind of discipline and respect for life had been in operation a day earlier, perhaps there would not have been so many murdered.

They Caught the grooming gangs red handed and they still didn't prosecute so why do they do need this access!
Which grooming gangs did they catch red-handed, and haven't prosecuted? Do you have some links to stories about it?

I really want the advance data protection back on.. its unfair we are missing out on a basic right of privacy..
ADP remains enabled for those who already had it enabled.
- If you had it enabled and you disabled it, you cannot currently re-enable it.
- If you never had it enabled, you cannot enable it.
- If you currently have it enabled and you disable it, you will not be able to re-enable it.

You already have privacy. The government cannot access your data (covered by Standard Data Protection, not ADP) without a warrant that has to be signed-off by a judge; just as the police cannot search your house without a warrant signed-off by a judge.

Unless you've been under a rock, you may have heard about a little thing called AI.
There's no need to be rude.

Centralising government surveillance networks and monitoring all feeds in real time is now a possibility. It's already being done.

That technology in itself isn't "evil", and it would certainly help in being proactive in stopping crime. The concern is how it's utilised by the government.

You need to realise that surveillance solutions that issues an infringement for littering will in fact be implemented in the western world over the coming decade.
If any government in the UK tried this, they would be out of power as soon as possible.

Americans are constantly telling us UK citizens that we just roll over and let our government do these things to us, but they're completely and utterly wrong. We fight back, we reject these ideas. Yes, we write to our MPs, and Americans might feel that shooting up the Governor's house is the way to go, but we don't do that. We write to our MPs and we voice our concerns. Our MPs raise these concerns in the Houses of Parliament, and these concerns are heard. That's what we do in a democracy. If our MPs don't help us out, we vote them out and vote in someone who will listen.

It’s easy to tell when a government no longer trusts its citizens… 🔥

I read a lot about this, especially when I came to Canada. I was more anti-CCP than most people here, but as I read more and witness the disfunction of western governments (here in Canada and United States), I think CCP system is way better than democratic system.

There is no massacre at all, bar none. I don't want make this post as proactive, but I do support the government crack down. Without government intervention, there is no China today. In some words, if the movement is successfully, China will under control by US influences and I don't think this is good for China.

You also not mention student went to burn military vehicles, burn soldiers alive. If this kind of thing happens in your country, there is no doubt police or military will using force. Just look at what happen in LA or cities where Trump send national guards.

The penalising people for social media posts is for incitement, not just saying things. Lucy Connoly the far right's idol told people to burn down hotels with people inside. That's not sharing an oppinion, that's a crime whether in a pub, or on social media.

The Home office can do one with this invasion of privacy and overreach.
Should be a crime here too but obviously is not:

Honestly mate, I bloody hope so.

I’m originally from Truro, so I would love to take my kids back to where I was born.

The UK is going down the ******* fast. If it isn’t this government the next one will try to bring in centralised monitoring and governance powered by AI.

I think it’s inevitable that both the western and eastern worlds will go down a mass surveillance micromanaged system.

The UK government has issued a new request for Apple to provide access to encrypted iCloud user data, the Financial Times reports.

iCloud-Versus-UK-Key-Feature.jpg

The report reveals that, in early September, the UK Home Office demanded that Apple creates a way for officials to access encrypted iCloud backups. Unlike its previous order, the latest request focuses on the iCloud data of British citizens specifically. The demand is designed to aid law enforcement with investigations into terrorism and child sexual abuse.

The Home Office's previous request from January sought access to encrypted user data worldwide, which triggered a diplomatic clash between the UK and U.S. governments. The Trump administration pressured the UK to discard the order and, in August, director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said that the UK had "agreed to drop" its demand, at least with regards to the encrypted data of American citizens.

In February, Apple withdrew iCloud's Advanced Data Protection feature in the UK and raised public objections to the request. It also registered a complaint with the Investigatory Powers Tribunal and supported a legal challenge from the campaign group Privacy International and Liberty.

Questions remain around whether the Trump administration has relaxed its view of the issue, and whether building a backdoor into encrypted iCloud data for the British government would jeopardize the security of global user data.

And the answer will be no, cannot do it, cannot comply. The UK government can just pound sand.

Even Trump didn't send in tanks, and to my knowledge military tanks have never been used by the US government against civilians (although bullets and so-called 'non-lethal' weapons have). I disagree with your view entirely and find it unfathomable, but it is your right to have that view, and nobody in the West would send tanks at you for having it. FWIW have a nice weekend.
