Still OT, how smart is your house?

Mine is 95% smart. Have Yale front door, every door has a sensor, every main room has mmWave motion sensor, others PIR motion. Every light switch is smart (so you can e the switch or use voice). I haven’t used a light switch in ages as lights come on as I wonder around and go off if too light etc. Music follows me around the house. Watching TV in the lounge, no problem, lights dim and come back up when I pause/stop watching. Ask Robovac to clean the house, say goodnight and the thermostat is set to cool, garden lights dim to 10%, security cameras activated, all appliances turned off and alarm armed.

I use something called Home Assistant as the main hub that marries together all the disjoined systems. Oh and NO CLOUD. It all works locally :)

Back on topic. May use my iPhone 15 to control some bits in a few weeks :)
not anywhere near the home automation inside...

have started looking at home assistant with the home battery and car charger now but spent more time looking at cases for a Raspberry Pi than anything else 😂

seen this quality little one which makes it look like a NES and the SSDs are inside game cartridges!

How you getting on with UR @Apple Mac Daz ?

By OFCOM rules it has to be ported within 24 hours. Never had a problem porting my number, Been on EE, 3, O2, Voda and Voxi. My number was original an Orange number from 1995.
1995 - back in the day mobile numbers didn‘t all start with 07! Old skool

I’m slightly further on.

The locking and unlocking bit is kinda working.

The issue I have is when I lock the door using the app, the latch doesn’t actually lock in place (so you would need a key to unlock it).

Also, this new lock cylinder clearly doesn’t support unlocking with a key from outside (in case of smart lock failure), when there’s a key in the inside. 🤦🏻‍♂️

So I think the simplest option is to replace it with a Thumb Turn lock.
Using this with my Nuki lock successfully if it's any help 👍

Have you done the calibration option in settings?
Yes.

I‘ve had to order one of these on a 30 minute delivery from Screwfix, as there’s no way past the fact that the lock I installed earlier does not allow the outside lock to operate when there’s a key in the inside lock (That’s a separate “feature” when it comes to locks apparently).

We have a single room with lighting controlled on a motion sensor, and it's nearly cost me a marriage...!

I set the kitchen up so that the lighting is triggered by a motion sensor. However, quite obviously, the lights go out if no motion is sensed. Therefore, there have been countless times when the missus is doing something on the island, not moving quite enough for the motion sensor to sense motion. The lights go out, and all I hear is "Why the hell can't I live in a normal house with normal lights?!?!?! I'm gonna rip this thing off the wall!!! It's my house as much as yours!!! You and your stupid gadgets!!!"

Needless to say, the setup is still in place, and I'm on a mission to add as many more gadgets as physically possible! ;)

All other rooms in the house are on Hue bulbs/switches, lights in selected rooms come on at sunset, fans are on smart plugs with Siri commands, etc etc etc.
For motion - the new Aqara FP2 mmWave sensors are excellent at noticing occupancy (HomeKit (read LOCAL no CLOUD) out of the box too and wireless rather than Zigbee so you don't need a hub if you don't have one) - my sleeping chihuahua in the lounge is detected - they really notice even light breathing. In the downstairs cloakroom (well toilet actually lol), I use a Shelly 1L in the ceiling rose and a PIR motion sensor to turn on and off. As it is a PIR and needs motion (rather than slight motion like breathing), I have it to turn off after 5 mins of no motion, but after 4 mins 30 seconds it slow flashes once to remind the person sitting on the loo to wave lol to stop them from going into darkness. I swear before mobile phones no one ever spent 5 mins on the loo!

I have now started making my own sensors/relays for things running off an ESP32 microcontroller (about £5 from Ali Express) and use my latest toy of a 3D printer to print enclosures etc for them so it isn't a bare board with wires hanging out :) I have have printed mounts for my Apple TV behind the TV and perfect mounts for the motion sensors etc. If anyone has spare cash after the IP15PM purchase, I would strongly recommned they get a 3D printer - the uses are amazing!

These things are never straightforward, hope you get it all up and running soon.

Lol I have that very case on my 'RetroPie' game station.

A Pi4 is enough to get started on the Home Assistant journey (or rabbit hole lol), I am now on an Intel NUC with Proxmox (like VMware but free and better as run LXC containers) and have about 18 different LXCs running various docker containers (yep containers in containers) running all sorts of things like Home Assistant, Node Red, mqtt, Zigbee2mqtt, Zwave2mqtt, Adguard HOme, Duo MFA, NGINX reverse Proxy, Tailscale router etc etc. Start with the Pi though :)

My HA journey started with one Phillips Hue bulb and a motion sensor about 8 years ago lol. Got the bug and now even the non technical wife loves it all. It works 99% of the time lol.

To go back on topic. I am still genuinely on the fence what to do - stick or twist. Keep my 'new' 14 Pro or waste money of a 15 pro.

Upgrade or go home 😆

I’ve never known a lock work with a key in both sides.

The thumb turn lock is a legal requirement on the front door of new builds in Scotland. One of my parent’s neighbours was found dead on the inside of the front door after a house fire - he didn’t have a key to get out.

Welcome back, where you been, we been here for 2 months already!!

Unfortunately, the process for eSIM on O2 is messed up when it comes to moving it. Best ringing up now and asking for a blank physical and black eSIM, You can then move it to the physical and then onto new eSIM, I think you can move it directly to new eSIM once you have it but @CD3660 has been told otherwise.

For those that can’t get a discount on Apple gift cards via their work benefits, might be worth looking what you can get on supermarkets or Currys. I don’t get an Apple gift card offer, but 5% saving on Currys e gift cards which I’ve then been using to buy Apple gift cards. Bit of a faff, but for £70+ saving on the phone it’s worth the effort.
