I am not spreading misinformation I rang up 2 apple stores and they told me that they aren't allowed to sell any iPhones as Sim free until next week when they get their stock in.

OK, I stand corrected, but it's a complete about-turn from last year.

I wonder if this is to stop people buying them to sell online elsewhere? Much easier to buy a phone SIM free and sell it for profit than it is to sell one that is SIM locked - especially if the intention is to sell it in a market that has not yet launched the iPhone 4S. By restricting to contract only, people who want to buy one for themselves should find it easier to do so.

That's most likely the reason. Does it apply to the 9pm reservations, when they're available? Since an Apple ID is required, that would allow the staff to detect scalpers.

Agreed.

The 9 o clock reservations are for sim free, but I agree that the Apple id prevents the purchase of large numbers to sell at a profit.

Went to Apple store today and they had all models but refused to sell SIM free - contract or upgrade only.

Went to the 3 store next door and they gave me one on the spot. I needed to take a 1 month contract but the salesperson said I could cancel after 7 days and get the phone unlocked.

I am surprised that Apple refused to sell one SIM free. but like you got fed up with Apple and no stock, likewise VF and that smabolic systems, so went to Three, got one and a monthly SIM contract (which is cheaper than my current VF monthly SIM contract). Have already had it unlocked

Brilliant service as well

They aren't selling sim free models in store until this week.

Went into Apple Store Covent Garden today, asked what was going on with the reserve and collect system (as it hadn't reflectd any stock all week, except for Stratford store but they couldn't actually be reserved) and was told that it was reflecting all the stock they had for sale....was then taken to one side and in oddly hushed tones was told that if I also bought a Three PAYG sim then they could sell me an unlocked Black 32GB 4S.

For an extra £15, well worth it. Wife now happy :D

Anyway, I hope to find the 4s in one of the apple store :(

That's my plan also, In my opinion there shouldn't be a problem buying a 4s from a 3 store. You are coming in end of November so I am pretty sure there wouldn't be any supply issues by then.

Went into 2 Orange and 2 Phones 4U shops today, both had contract for sale but no PAYG.

I did ask could just not buy that one (the one he was holding. contract) on PAYG but he said no as its sold with a contract sim. Loada balls but what can you do about it. Have to wait till all the contractors have had there pickings as i have one on order but wont be here til next week :(

Anyone still waiting for their '3' phone to be unlocked? Purchased and unlocked a 4S yesterday and still waiting for it to be unlocked! When activating with a different network sim, it just asks to add a compatible sim-card! :(

I have an iPhone 4 so will wait for a 4s, didn't think that Apple would pander so much to their carriers, surprising that they have stock and will not sell to their customers without contract.

I was surprised too - I thought that hardware/software was their business but as other has said the kickbacks from carriers must be worth it. Perhaps the carriers are p1ssed that so many are buying SIM free to avoid the expensive contracts.

Interestingly the guy I spoke to said I should have reserved online last night ... I just laughed and walked away as I don't think it would be fair for me to take out my frustrations on him when his employer is at fault.

Just went into the apple store in Basingstoke and wouldn't sell me one with a 3 pay as you go. :(

Go the the Three shop in Basingstoke buy one from them. Take out a one month SIM only contract £10 per month and you are there. Ring 333 and ask their CS to unlock it

It's so simple
