Why?
I suspect the reason for this error is the reservation system gives the phone to the first person to complete the transaction. So even if you find a store with stock by the time you get to the next page someone else might have got through 1 second before. A better system would be to lock the reservation to the first person who clicks (for say 5 minutes) to allow them to complete the transaction.

It's a poor design and not very well thought out but at the end of the day the phones are getting sold so I guess they won't change it.

I dont think he means the apple store, they only sell sim free. Some 3 stores will sell payg to anybody, some only to existing contract customers and some only on contract, every store seems to have a local policy

Apple stores do sell iPhone's on contract.

No I mean the actual apple stores. They have phone in stock but are only allowed to sell them on contract. They arent allowed to sell Sim free yet.

I don't think so, cause the avaibility of the iphone (16 Gb white and 64 gb black... if I remember) of the apple store in London yesterday night (the only one in the UK), remain the same for a lot of time... more than the time needed to place a reservation.
What you say, could be possible if you are trying to order the last iphone.

Infact you use the singolar "the reservation system gives the phone to the first"...
I dont think thay put every night just 1 phone.

And if they put more phones, is strange that always, when you arrive to reserve there is the last piece of the day.

I tried to reserve in france & germany, no problem... never.
Try tonight at you 7.55 pm.

I don't think the sistem is different, so i dont understand

Does anyone have a stand for their iPhone in the car? If so, could I have a recommendation? :)

Regarding Apple stores, this is completely, 100% wrong. If they have stock, they will sell them to whoever wants them, with a contract or SIM free and unlocked. If they're not selling them, it's simply because they have no stock.

Ordered mine on the 14th. Estimated delivery is 24th-31st. Still processing.. sigh

And for those posters who are following timelines, I ordered a white 32GB on the 11th; it changed from "processing items" to "preparing for shipment" yesterday afternoon, the 21st, and it has just shipped this morning with an estimated delivery via UPS of the 25th.

For those who are trying to use the 9pm reservation system, here is some advice that I found when buying the iPad 2 earlier this year. I may have been lucky, but after a couple of nights of frustration, I succeeded on the first night that I tried this.

When there is stock available, you need to move quickly through the stages of the process. This involves knowing which model you want before the page loads so that you can select it immediately and having your Apple ID and password pre-typed in a text window or a clipboard manager so that they can be copy-pasted smartly when required.

Someone suggested that the reason that this works is that there is a short "window of opportunity" built into the website where the link to the next stage of the process is reserved for a while. This window only lasts a few seconds for each stage and, once it lapses, your request goes into the queueing system with everyone else and you'll likely be disappointed. But, if you're decisive and quick enough, this fast-track seems to let you straight through.

Quick question thinking about getting two of new iPhones (upgrading from a t-mobile pulse horrible phone and my trust first gen iPhone) how is the data usage on these new phones like. I know it depends on usage but was wondering if the 500mb limit would fly past very quickly or not.

In normal use how much data have you used on your iPhone 4s?

This reserve system is a joke to be honest. Apple have given the networks far too many handsets, leaving the people who are finally astute enough not to pay £1000 over two years to refresh at 9pm every evening. Joke.

So many handsets that three is willing to sell one on payg. That tells you how many they have got. They must receive very little profit at all on selling payg.

When I had my BlackBerry, I never once surpassed 500mb. I understand they compress their data over the network which is why they're usually miles faster but...

I've already past it with my 4S. That's pretty bad. Keep a tab on it though, as I have downloaded quite a few apps over 3G. Hopefully in the months to come it'll pan on only a little worse :)

a friend got me a 3 pay as you one. Hope I don't have any problems getting it unlocked

Nope, you are wrong.

They are selling them on contract at the Metro centre Apple store today, no stock of sim free though, it's not mis information.

I just got a 32gb from 3 in the metro centre, Gateshead. They have them in black and are happy to unlock instore if you want. I'm with 3 on contract anyway so no need to unlock. For info, the guy said, most 3 shops are happy to unlock as they get commission regardless.

Concerning the unlock procedure, how many time is needed to unlock the mobile phone?

Is something immediate?
Or in the store, you just start the procedure, that will take some hours? days? ??

And sorry for that question... is the first time for me, but how can I be sure my mobile phone is unlocked?

Just putting in the microsim of my country, and if it works is ok? (I'm italian)

Can you finally repeat please, I dont really know how does it work in your conutry, if I'm going to buy a 16GB paygo,
I have to pay: 499 £ + unlock fee (usually 15-20£)+ other? what? and STOP!

And the best operator seems to be 3.uk to do this procedure!?

After the unlock, your iphone became identical to the ones sold in the apple stores?
So, can I come back to my country without thinkings?

thanks very much

3 are fine to unlock immediately, £15 charge and normally within 3 hours apparently. But best ask to make sure

Thanks very much,

But if it's not so sure, is a little be dangerous for me that I'll stay in London 4 days.

Cause I read somewhere, that to be unlocked, the mobile phone have to stay under the network of the operator that is unlocking it.
If I come back to Italy, under the roaming... :D
It doesn't work.

Anyway, I hope to find the 4s in one of the apple store :(

I got mine earlier and phoned 3 from the phone and they took all the details and said it can take 24 hours to reach apple and then it can take apple 24 hours to unlock it

I'm really glad I got mine on eBay rather than ordering through Apple! I was lucky enough to get it at retail price.

Anyway, I hope yours aren't delayed too much longer.

I am not spreading misinformation I rang up 2 apple stores and they told me that they aren't allowed to sell any iPhones as Sim free until next week when they get their stock in.

I wonder if this is to stop people buying them to sell online elsewhere? Much easier to buy a phone SIM free and sell it for profit than it is to sell one that is SIM locked - especially if the intention is to sell it in a market that has not yet launched the iPhone 4S. By restricting to contract only, people who want to buy one for themselves should find it easier to do so.
