Contract phones are all locked to a specific network aren't they?
No, they're all unlocked. However when they're setting up the contract for a certain network then the phone automatically gets locked to that sim or something like that.
Yeah, the SIM lock is applied when the phone is activated, the iTunes server knows which network lock to apply. If you've ever bought an iPhone in an Apple store, they scan a bar code to tell the system which network the phone is being sold on (or if it is SIM free).

Ordered 9th from Apple website and shipping estimate was 24 - 31 Oct. this got brought forward to 18 - 24th a week later. Yes 2 weeks is a long time, to be fair though that 1st week was per-release. I'm now exhausted thinking and losing sleep over a damn phone so glad its arrived. Heh heh I'm do sad..

I'm joining the reservation lottery from tomorrow, been waiting for payday. Been trying to check my local store but the site really slows down leading up to 9pm and when I tried it showed none. Which doesn't fill me with hope.
It really bugs me that walk in is contract only. That's what the network stores are for.

I found when the site starts to lag its when they are updating it. Safari can never load it but chrome can. I also use the iOS apple store app as I see the reservations first on there.

yeah 2 weeks is a long long time!! i cant wait to get my hands on it! and sadly i have to send it to my fiance aborad via my friend! and he is gonna leave UK on 29th:/ and if it didnt arrive before time i have to DHL/FEDex it:/
My launch day phone came with a scratch on it which Apple promptly promised to replace. However, that meant i joined the 1-2 weeks queue and was in limbo since launch day till i got order confirmation on the 19th. Its now shipped yesterday 24th and is scheduled to be with me today 25th via UPS

I'll be in London from the 17 to the 21 of nov, for that date I hope to find simfree in the apple store... I hope they'll have good stocks anywhere in the stores.
But I'm thinking at alternatives.
The problem is that I'll stay there just for 4 days, and I have to be sure that at the end of my visit, my phone will be unlocked... if there exist the risk, the only way I have is to pay more and buy it in my country! damn
Cost me £530, which I was happy to spend given the wait for one from Apple. I was in a hurry as I was newly iPhone-less as well as my iPhone 4 was damaged last month hence why I wanted to upgrade to the 4s, otherwise I may have left it until the next iPhone.
The unlock usually takes 24 hours or less (i've been told) unless you buy on a Friday or Saturday. If you do you'll be waiting til Monday like me.

Do you mean buying the iphone from the store?
Things may be different at the end of november but right now you would be lucky to have any iphone 4s's in stock in the apple store.
Yes, I hope to find a freesim in an apple store (convet gardem regent st., etc) but if they don't have stock for that date, I could try to buy it in a voda, 3uk, etc store... but cause I'm not from Uk, I'm a little be afraid to do that.
On monday night I'll be at home...
I don't want to come back home with an Ipod paid 530£
Do you know if, for the unlock operation, is necessary the phone is connected to the network that is unlocking it?
Or is just an sms you have to recive, so you could recive it in Uk, france, new zeland, etc (roaming)
You have just to make start the operation in the shop, and after you can be anywhere. (?)

Ordered on 16th still processing. It says delivered 25th of October - 1st of November. So does this mean i will not be able to get it before 1st of Nov.? Because it's already within the delivery week and it's still not even preparing for shipment
