Mainly frequencies, I would imagine. It's not in their interests to offer the same facility as they have spare capacity at 900MHz from their GSM network. 900MHz propagates much further than the higher frequency stuff and would give them a significant advantage over the other three networks. 3 in particular have been vocal in objecting to this advantage. If they were to offer to share their radio network, this advantage would be eroded. T-Mo and Orange all have their 2G networks at 1800MHz, very similar in characteristics to the ~2100MHz that 3G uses, so not such an advantage.

That said, Vodafone and O2 are doing some work together at a limited level. Google Cornerstone for more information.

*disclaimer* I'm a core network engineer, not a radio engineer, so tend to view some of this stuff as borderline black magic. But you can't spend 13 years in the industry without gaining a basic understanding of the technology :)

Interesting reading - thanks for the info :)

Yes. It's outsourced, just like the rest of 3's network. It was managed by Ericsson, last time I heard.

Orange have done something similar with their network - all the radio and switching kit is managed by NSN, as is Vodafone's.

Maintenance is all well and good although it would be quite nice to see some network sharing so us end users get a better experience (or an experience at all) whenever we enter our host network's blackspots. It's for this reason that I carry around a Mifi (on Three) with me even when I'm just going out with my iPhone (on O2's network).

Woah, no posts in 30 mins!! I feel the need to state that my order is still processing :p

Also does anyone use/have experience with phonedevil screen protectors?

And do you think that the fact there is no cutout for the two sensors that are much more visible on the white version will interfere with their functions? As in will the screen protector covering the sensors 'mess' them up?

Micro-SIM shenanigans with Three UK

This will be my very first iPhone and I'm very much looking forward to receiving mine from Three on Friday morning... Except, I'm a little bit concerned about how I'm going to get my number on it...

My contract isn't due for an upgrade, because I done one in February this year to get a HTC Wildfire. Needless to say, the phone was absolutely dreadful and I gave it away to my Mum to use, whilst I went back to my ancient Samsung fliphone. It didn't take much effort to get her sorted on the Wildfire, she just slipped in her SIM card and she was ready to go. However, this is not the case with the iPhone 4/iPhone 4S is it?

I'm going to need a Micro-SIM, but not just any Micro-SIM, I need one that is going to be MY number (not the one that is getting the iPhone 4S as an upgrade). I am also on Three, so I would hope that it's not going to be a problem...

Is it possible for me to just get my SIM card cut down to a Micro-SIM, ready to put it in the iPhone 4S that will arrive from Three?
Or will I have to do something a lot more complicated?
Or is it impossible, even? (I hope not) :(

Thank you for any help people. I signed up just to ask this. :p

I avoid them, they don't really protect the screen, all they do is stop finger prints and oil getting on the screen, but that can wiped away, also i find a screen protector hinders the image quality of the display.

You can cut it down with a template or sim cutter. It has been widely discussed on these forums. You could ask Three for a micro-sim, and transfer the service to the new sim.

yep you have 2 choices, cut down the sim yourself, or take it to a three store and they will use a sim cutter to cut it down for you, both have the same outcome, then when you get the 4S just pop the sim in and go, data mins, texts will all just work.

Thank you very much Deako and androiphone. My worries about the iPhone 4S have now completely vanished. :)

Sorry if it was a stupid question, I just panicked and wanted a straightforward answer straight away from someone on here. I couldn't find any help on Three and everything I was reading on the forums didn't seem to be exactly the way I'm doing it.

It's sorted now though. I must say, I love this site too, very active and full of interesting posts. :D

You can cut it yourself using a template from the www but if you goof up just
tell Three you need a micro-sim with your number transferred over. You don't need to tell them too much, just tell them you're getting an iPhone (just in case its not obvious enough for them already). There may be a small charge for this but don't let them rip you off over this. If you go down this route, your number won't work for a day or so whilst the transfer is happening and when you get your new sim.

Edit: Me too late. :)

got back from working in newcastle, checked post and i got a 3 pay monthly sim through the door!
not a micro sim just a standard size sim.
now when i rang they said they would send another sim to give to another person.
but they have sent me a pay monthly sim.
i hope i aint getting charged for another sim aswell as the iPhone 4 contract

Pre-ordered my 16GB White O2 4S with The Carphone Warehouse just a few minutes ago... Very nice lady on the phone, she said that most of them have had to work overtime to supply demand! Very easy process, was put on hold for around 10 minutes.

iPhone is gauranteed to be here between 7:30-9AM on Friday. Let's roll!

Hmm, I ask because I'm going the whole use a pouch with the phone naked route. I honestly think the only reason I want one is for peace of mind maybe. Phonedevil's are apparently 100% see through (well a lot more see through than some other one's out there).

Thanks for your input! I'll probably wait till the last second before I decide, as always :p.

Ugh, can't believe it's working today...wouldn't work last night at around 5 for the white 16 (in store!)...may ring up tomorrow morning and see if I can somehow change it ;)!

Mine says ship by 14th October? Not ships on. My order gone through before 8:50 any chance mine is coming earlier? I'm using hsbc debit no money deduct so far

There is always a chance but there is no guarantee. It will be delivered when it's delivered.

Tesco £7.50 (200mins) + £5 (500gb data) = £12.50

[ or you could try auto top-up on giff-gaff for £10 a month but seems a bit of a hassle to remember to make sure you top up at least £10 a month (auto-topup only triggers for £3 or below) ]

+ you need one of these:

:)

are you sure that's not 500mb of data? Three have good deals on and you don't need to deal with their customer services much, if it at all, if you are on sim only :)

like i said a couple of posts up (or down depending how you look at it) i have received a pay monthly sim card!
not a micro sim one, so god knows what thats for!

ill have to ring em tomorrow

Jesus... what a good start eh!

I'll update in here if I get anything (right or wrong) tomorrow in the post

I have just seen the same thing for my debit card account. I ordered straight away last Friday and the available balance was reduced by £499. However, the available balance has now gone back up to the original balance (prior to the order)

Mine has done the same, except I ordered on my credit card (two by mistake at first but cancelled one now!). It immediately showed the pending transaction on my online banking. However, I've just checked online and it's now showing no pending transactions and the balance on the card prior to the order....I hope it's gone through. Apple asked me to verify my identity for security which I did and when I spoke to them they said they had received all the paperwork and it was all going through fine so fingers crossed it's okay!

I'm already with 3, i forgot about the micro sim but the advisor mentioned it would come with the iPhone

i remember briefly she mentioning something about they would be sending me another sim to give to someone else, but i assumed it would be a payg sim!

Yeah, I tried in-store too but didn't have any luck either... Make sure you call early tomorrow, only the first batch of iPhones will come on release (5,000 I think)...

Ah right

Did they give some estimation of the date? Or if they have stock?
