Oh well by 0902 I had placed reservations for SIM free 32GB black & slate's in Milton Keynes, Leicester and Birmingham. One in each store. If they disregard my order for trying to get a single unit from at least one of those stores, a bit harsh really.

It's probably an automated system that believes you are trying to obtain sufficient quantities to sell at a profit. If you succeeded with all 3, you'd have 3 phones to sell on. So you get dropped from the lottery for not playing by the unwritten rules.

It doesn't play by Apple's own rules either then. I'm pretty sure you could have queued in to an Apple store on release day and bought more then one per person. Wasn't the limit two per person?

Yes, the limit was two per person.

Who says Apple have to use the same rules for launch day as they do now? We're guessing, we have no idea what rules and restrictions apply.

Not having done this before, is the reservation a commit to buy? What happens if I can't make it in the store, or indeed I reserve both the white and black (as I'm not fussy on the colour) and just pick up one?

Do I have to do a reservation each day or just it goes into a list?

tbh I may just go and order online if this is all a bit hard!

You're not committed. They hold it till end of day then it goes back in the pot.

To be honest I'm thinking may just order online. This process is ridiculous.

Yeah, last years method was simpler. at least you had some certainty when you made your initial reservation.

It wasn't perfect though.

Perhaps last years system (where you went on apple site at a specific time, selected your store, and then your chosen size and colour) should be used, but slightly adapted to avoid issues of people buying multiple phones.
(Perhaps you could input credit card details, and you would need to present that same card when picking up the next day)

This may be a over generalisation, but i Honestly believe that the overwhelming majority of sim free iphone sales paid by cash, are for resale purposes. No doubt n my mind

This current system is ridiculous. People don't know the rules, and are entering blindly.

orders on 19th sep

did anybody orders on 19th september or around it and get their status changed to..preparing?

i like to be informed so i can prepare for a case and a screen protector.

Not yet. I'm not expecting anything to happen till next week. I've ordered the 32gb black one which seems to be one of the more popular ones so I've given up hope of it being delivered early. I already have my case though!

That happened in the queue on launch day as well, you could see a fair number of groups with a "master" and 5 or 6 "drones". It was apparent to everyone that the "drones" didn't know an Apple iPhone from an Apple pie.

When they got to the front of the queue, only the "master" spoke and order colours and capacities for the whole group, and when led into the shop the "master" paid cash for the whole groups phones.

Everyone could see what was happening, I suppose there was nothing the Apple staff could do about though.

Not really, any shop has the right to refuse service to anybody, for any reason. They should have done that if it was really that obvious. Maybe they didn't want the hassle though.

So on the flip side .....

If you got e mails for 2 or even three of your reservations one or two other people will miss out !

Looks like CPW's availability has improved significantly since yesterday.

I'm still waiting for mine to be delivered. (Yodel... grrr!)

Yes, but in the current "politically correct" world we live in, I doubt the Apple staff would intervene and be accused of racism or similar. Especially as most of the "drones" had limited English, I suppose the "master" could pass himself off as their interpreter, don't know how he would have explained why he was paying for all the phones though

How so? The two I don't claim go back in to the 'pot' for the next days round of reservations.

The main issue here though, is a half baked system with no ground rules laid out by Apple. There would be none of this discussion if they had just put a disclaimer on the bottom of the page that said something along the lines of 'multiple requests will be rejected'.

Perhaps evidence as to why there is such a shortage here:

My iPhone (32GB Black & Slate) arrived today from CPW.

Serial number indicates production week is 39 (4th week of september), so has this been sitting around in a CPW warehouse for 1-2 weeks?! Seems hard to believe.

From http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html/ :

Code:
Serial number: ...
Production year: 2012
Production week: 39 (September)
Name: iPhone 5
ModelCode: iphone_5
Model Number: MD299
Group1: iPhone
Group2:
Generation: 7
Machine Model: iPhone5,1
CPU speed: 1.3GHz
Screen size: 4 inch
Screen resolution: 1136x640 pixels
Colour: Black
Capacity: 32GB
Factory: C3 (China)

It does have a slight, small smudge in the paint, at the edge of the "top" aluminium band where it meets the "middle" band, in the corner nearest the power switch. Not very noticeable and not something I'm going to go cry to Apple over.

Otherwise, seems perfect! I'm happy.

In a weird way, I'm sort of glad I'm failing to get one. Apparently Apple have now ramped up quality control so future batches should not be coming out of the box with scratches and scuffs.

SNIP

Well it does seem a surprise but then contract phones seem to be a lot more available than these mythical SIM free phones from the apple store.

Was doing my maths this afternoon and for a 64gb, it's actually quite close on contract v outright sale:

I'm looking at t-mobile/orange:

CPW are doing £31 per month + £270 up front, giving you a total of £1014 over 2 years on t mobile (can't seem to find the same deal on the t mobile site but wouldn't be the first time CPW have a better deal than the provider!)
Buy the phone outright & the £10.50 Orange SIM only contract and you get to £952.

Yes, the Orange SIM is for a year, not 2 but I was trying to compare as like for like on price as much as possible.

Is it black and slate? what about marks on the sides or back, is it spotless. Check it closely lol

Black 32GB

Yeah completely spotless.. No issues at all. Just got to wait a few more days for my wallet case to arrive.
