Not got the iPhone 5S I want yet. It's a long story...
- Attempted two stores on launch day - first sold out before it opened at 8am and the second sold out within 15 mins of opening (5 mins after I arrived). Never had a problem in previous years (I've had to wait but always got a phone on the day).
- Went home and ordered online with an 'October' date but I had already sold my iPhone 5 (expecting to get one on launch date - my own fault but wanted to get the best price).
- Tried a few Apple stores over the next few days but without success - too many scalpers.
- After a week without a phone, managed to purchase the 32GB Space Grey at an Apple store but wanted the silver/white as had always had black fronted iPhones.
- Went home with phone and decided to buy a silver/white one via Carphone Warehouse. I ended up with 64GB because they charged a £50 premium for 32GB. Was aware it locks to first network used but thought O2 would unlock it free of charge as per their website (O2 refused).
- Meanwhile, returned unopened space grey to store (didn't want to sell on eBay after being critical of scalpers and you'd have to sell for a premium to cover eBay/PayPal charges).
- Was happy using my using the CPW purchased phone for almost two weeks but noticed it kept restarting. Apple said they'd replace it instore but only had space grey.
- Returned phone to Carphone Warehouse and decided to attempt purchasing from Apple stores. Did the usual calling and checking instore first thing (I visited 3 London stores per day on 3 days this past week alone).
- This week I managed to get an iPhone - but could only get the Space Grey model (which is sitting unopened as I debate whether to accept that I'm going to have a space grey model for the next year or whether I should keep venturing to Apple store).
I have to say, it's taken the fun out of the iPhone experience for me. It's my fault for selling my previous phone ahead of purchasing the iPhone 5S. I also kicked myself by cancelling my original online order (as I would've had my phone by now).
That said, I don't feel that Apple haven't managed the demand/shortfall very well this year. Fair enough, demand outstrips supply but they didn't public state that there would be extremely limited quantities in store. Many speculated especially as online orders didn't go live until launch day. They could've done more to help customers get their phones or managed expectations better.
