Agreed, that said, why bother putting the pro chip in it? Worse performance than the non pro chip in the base model.
Felt a bit like trying to justify the price of the air.
maybe it has some additional efficiency elements that help battery life? maybe its a smaller process node than the A19 which would save battery? Maybe faster so race to idle helps with bursty tasks?

The reviews make me laugh sometimes, like this quote from the Verge review on the MR homepage:

As long as it doesn't actually run out by the time you go to bed and put it on to charge, who cares what % it has left? And how is the cost of the phone a factor in that? A £200 phone that runs out in 2h would be OK, would it? And running intensive benchmarks or games on the Air and then complaining that it gets hot and it uses up the battery is like trying to render an 8K video with loads of effects on a MacBook Air and complaining about the same thing. It's not the right tool for that job! If you want thin and light there will be less battery, it's just physics. If you want big battery and sustained max performance there are other phones in the lineup for that, just like there is a Mac Pro. Doesn't make either model a bad product.

Everything needs to fit into the narrow band of activities that tech youtubers do otherwise its not useful for anyone. I think the Tech Chap is perhaps the most balanced I’ve seen so far in the rush to get launch videos out.

I agree. Having watched most of the YouTube reviews today I think The Tech Chap's one was by far the best and most balanced, while including plenty of technical detail. Well shot, reasonable, good amounts of geeky while remaining firmly down to earth.

At 12:24 in this video it looks like the signal has been massively improved on the 17 Pro models. I wonder if the same applies to the iPhone 17?

I need to upgrade my 12 Pro and this is probably my second biggest reason to change.

So, reviews are out. What's next? Ah yes, the thursday afternoon/evening "ship, darn it" panic before you finally get tracking information!
May the delivery odds be ever in your favour.

I’m feeling creative today so I’m presenting you all with a spoiler preview of a some pull quotes from a few of today’s reviews:

Nilay Patel (The Verge):
“A marvel of engineering that somehow still feels like a trap”
“It feels like the future … until it doesn’t”
“The new iPhone is pretty impressive, but in a way that makes you feel worse about everything”

MKBHD:
“This is easily the best iPhone Apple has ever made … but it’s still an iPhone.”
“I’m not crazy about losing the black option but… yeah… fortunately dbrand exists.”
“If you’re upgrading from an iPhone that’s four years old, this will feel amazing. Peace out.”

Joanna Stern (WSJ):
“I tossed it in my purse, dropped it in the kitchen sink, and used it as a coffee coaster and it survived.”
“The camera is great, as long as you don’t expect it to make your life any less stressful.”

iJustine:
(while peeling the protective sticker off): “OH. MY GOD. This is … this is SO. COOL.”
“I’ve taken about a thousand pictures with the new Centre Stage camera and I’m … obsessed? with how crisp every shot looks!”
(while talking about the iPhone 17): “Wow. This lavender colour is SO. nice.”
(while snapping the MagSafe battery to the Air): “WHOA! It just snaps on! That is so neat!”
(while previewing the new TechWoven cases): “This texture? Wow!”

You’re all welcome.

Do you not have a job?

I have a 15:00 - 15:15 timeslot on Friday to pick up a Pro Max but a conflicting engagement has come up so I'd prefer to pick it up an hour earlier. It's not possible to edit a pickup timeslot online so I just spent some time on a chat with Apple customer service and they can't change it either but told me that I don't need to worry too much about the timing specified for the pickup slot and can come in at any time after I've received the "your order is ready for pickup" message from Apple. I can't remember though from my past pickups when those messages get sent. Are they all sent in one big batch at the start of the day or do they get sent in smaller batches closer to each person's pickup slot?

Given that pretty much everyone needs a reasonable amount of travel time to get to their closest Apple store I assume that even if the messages are sent out in smaller batches they will always be sent quite a few hours before someone's pickup slot opens, maybe even after close of business on the evening before pickup day, but if someone with a better memory than me (or in my defence, someone who has done a pickup more recently than a year ago) could jog my memory about the timing of those "ready for pickup" messages then I would be grateful.

Just had a look for you and when i picked up the 15 pro it was sent the night before.

Has anyone ordered from Amazon? I ordered and AWU3 from Amazon but it still just says “order received” my friend ordered 17PM and has the same “order received”. Just wondering if anyone has a date.

I’m keen to be able to test this out. Just switched to EE from Three due to black spots in the places I walk regularly, but there are still some weaker patches. Just done some speed tests with my 16 and will see if the 17 is better (though ok, one test probably isn’t very reliable)

Thanks! I’m keen to hear your results regardless :)

Hopefully someone does an in-depth review, but it seems like not too many people care about signal.
