I think it's clear that if you are going to push your iPhone to its limits for sustained periods of time you would get the Pro. that's always been a given really.
Agreed, that said, why bother putting the pro chip in it? Worse performance than the non pro chip in the base model.
Felt a bit like trying to justify the price of the air.

Came across this review. Haters gonna hate and yes, I can see the drawbacks but for a Standard user that wants to try something different, it's not a bad phone AT ALL. Is it worth the £1k... you decide for yourself. I will definitely take a look at the Air I ordered for the Missus.

The reviews make me laugh sometimes, like this quote from the Verge review on the MR homepage:

Personally, it makes me a little too anxious to see that battery indicator drop into the 20s before dinnertime, though in fairness I was going pretty hard on the battery with around five hours of screen-on time. On a much lighter day on my home Wi-Fi, three hours of screen-on time took the battery down to around 40 percent by bedtime. I'd call that within the bounds of acceptable, if a little on the low end for a $1,000 phone.

As long as it doesn't actually run out by the time you go to bed and put it on to charge, who cares what % it has left? And how is the cost of the phone a factor in that? A £200 phone that runs out in 2h would be OK, would it? And running intensive benchmarks or games on the Air and then complaining that it gets hot and it uses up the battery is like trying to render an 8K video with loads of effects on a MacBook Air and complaining about the same thing. It's not the right tool for that job! If you want thin and light there will be less battery, it's just physics. If you want big battery and sustained max performance there are other phones in the lineup for that, just like there is a Mac Pro. Doesn't make either model a bad product.

No praise for the Air in this review. Find the Iphone A19 chip outperforming the A19pro chip in the air a bit of a let down.

I'm now leaning towards the standard Iphone
Yup.

So this is slightly embarrassing, but I have gone stone cold over the Air after watching Mrwhosetheboss’s video.

I was seduced by how pretty the Air is. Which it is. It is pretty.

I really love my iPhone 16 regular. It’s my favourite ever iPhone. The iPhone 17 regular offers: more storage, better processor, better front and back cameras, better screen protection, marginally bigger screen. Did I miss anything? It’s a no brainer.

Argos still has stock for Friday delivery. I’ve placed a cash order. I am likely to refuse delivery of the Air (I can do that, right?).

You have 14 days to return it, so give it a try and see if it works for you.

One thing to say about mrwhostheboss's review. Watching a couple of others, I've noted not everyone is agreeing on points. Eg. He says the new telephoto is meh. That dedicated camera review smoke bar posted above though, is more positive.

Have to wonder about real life - if you want a lightweight phone for out and about, not a hardcore gamer, then why not the air? (That said, I still debate why they bothered with the pro chip).

£1099 for an Iphone and Battery pack with all the good hardware gutted out.
Standard Pro Max users will regret downgrading.

From watching a few reviews so far, it really seems like the entire range this year - 17, 17 Pro and Air - make up one of Apple's best lineups overall in years. So excited for Friday now.

Love The Tech Chap's review of the iPhone Air. He seems a really nice guy, feels like a real person. Love his take on it and his thermal machine thing! He showed some of the general public holding it and being wowed.

OK that review has swung me back to wanting the air 🤣

Watching MKBHD's video and I really feel the orange one is .. disgusting looking? under quite a lot of lighting conditions. The 'sticker' back glass just looks bad. The blue gets away with it most, it seems.

Good news is most people use a case so who cares, right? I don't though, never have and don't want to start now.

I get it, but there is the other side where folk come from an older phone and for them this phone would be a terrific upgrade. I am not a tech expert, but surely if you extensively use a Pro (or Max) and you compare the data sheet, you know there will be drawbacks?!

This image is savage.

Yea I’m thinking of cancelling the pro max and going for an air. Battery seems great, cameras fine and performance more than I need after running a 15 pro max for past couple of years. Orange is horrible and still not a fan of the blue I’ve ordered. Maybe a year to put design first and have a good looking Apple device

Genuinely shocked the battery is on par with the standard 17

I think it's cringeworthy, to be honest. 😆

Having devoured video and written reviews the last 2 hours it's clear the phone has no issues with all but intense load which the vast majority won't even get close to. And doesn't seem worse than any previous model.

Super geeky, benchmark-obsessed Pro users forcing it to heat and throttle to... do performative stunts like that photo... is a bit embarrassing IMO. 😬 It's like the modern day torture tests or "Will the new iPhone break if I drop it out of a 9th floor window" crap.

It's clear the Air is a really great phone, albeit with some compromises. I dunno why that's causing so many Pro users to crash out so bad - maybe because they want the sexiest phone AND the most powerful one, but that's just not possible this year?

The Pro models are incredible, the most powerful/capable and last time I checked, still available. The dumping all over the Air for trying to be something else, is a bit weird. Just my opinion.
