I finally managed to get a definitive answer from Apple today. I checked twice, once over the phone, and once in an online chat to be sure. They both gave the same answer.

Anyone on the iUP WILL on pre-order day be able to reserve a phone on the iUP page of the Apple website, provided you are eligible. Obviously you will have to go to the store with your current phone to complete the upgrade when the phone is available.

That's great! I was wondering this myself. Will we have the usual mad rush to get online at 8am as usual? And do we order to pick up in store or for delivery? And then take old iPhone in to complete?

I’m eligible for an upgrade now going from the website/app, but it says that I have to go into the store to upgrade.

Did they say that section will change between the 12th/when the new phones are available to pre order? Or will it just be a case of reserving and then going in store to complete the upgrade...?

I don’t want to be on the wrong section and therefore lose out on securing a phone.

Thanks for this mate! VERY helpful! Just out of curiosity is the iPhone Upgrade Program different from the financing? when I applied I clicked on the Barclays Partnership Financing but not sure if thats the same as the iPhone Upgrade Program as when I click on their site it says I'm not part of it. Either way I'll just trade in the iPhone 7 and pay off the rest and take out a new one

Yes, they said it would change

Also, it will be a case of reserving and then going into the store to compete.

Sorry, I have no idea. If you have the Apple Store app on your phone it'll tell you if you are on the iUP.

So just to confirm:

The AUP page will change to one where those who are on the upgrade program will be able to reserve our phones and then go into the store to collect/sign new agreement to complete?

Just checked and I get this;

So how does this work exactly? if you ordered one last year when you go to order does it say you had one last year and can upgrade? do you have to reserve it in store only? or can it be delivered?

If you go to the Apple app on your iPhone you'll see this. Not sure how it'll work getting the new phone though.

Read through what I've already posted. All your answers are there.

Thanks for clarifying.

Did they say that the app would be updated to potentially reserve one on there? The app seems to fare better when ordering anything on day one.

Apologies for all the questions - Apple should really be a bit more upfront regarding this.

Can you sign up for a new iUP account online or do you have to be able to visit the store?

I'm planning on selling my 7 to get the edition/X/8 but want to go on the upgrade program, but I may be away on business when the phone is released and may not be able to get to a store.

They said they didn't know about the app, but they assumed it would be updated.

Also wondering this. If they're allowing existing customer's to order online for the iUP it could mean they'll allow new sign ups online this year too, but obviously with a trip into store to complete.

On the other hand, it could also mean they're giving existing iUP members priority (which they should) and anyone wanting to join new will need to reserve for pickup when their local store physically has them.

I don't think the app will allow you to order online. All you'll be doing is reserving one for collection in store. Once in store, the Apple employees will have to check the condition of your existing phone to make sure it's in a suitable condition and then issue the new one. You'll probably have to take out a new credit Agreement too.

What I mean to say is that last year, anyone looking for the iUP had to reserve on on launch day, not preorder day, and the store they wanted to go to needed to physically have the phone in stock first. This meant a lot of checking the site early every morning until one popped up as available.

Clearly we'll have to go to store to get a new phone anyway, but if the store needs to have one in stock then we could be waiting a long time. What little stock there will be will likely vanish on preorder day for anyone willing to buy outright, and the rest of us will be waiting ages for more to appear in brick and mortar stores. That is, unless they allow people to preorder a reservation, then get a notification when your chosen store has the one you want set aside for you, however long it takes.

This is my concern as well.

Hi all, I'm on the upgrade programme and I am currently eligible to upgrade too. So I'll be keeping an eye on this thread over the coming weeks! I really hope we are given some sort of priority, if we have to try and reserve a phone on launch morning and every morning thereafter then it's ridiculous!

Hopefully Apple have learned from their mistakes with the mess that greeted US customers looking to upgrade last year. I don’t necessarily think those on the iUP should receive priority over those looking to purchase outright, but everyone should have the same chance to secure their preorder irrespective of payment method purely based on the time they pull up the store. This was not the case for US customers last year so fingers crossed we avoid a repeat

Last year I preordered my 7 on preorder day not launch day. I preordered it for collection on launch day at 1:30pm. When I got there they asked me how I would like to pay and I said I wanted to join the upgrade program. We did the paperwork, I payed the deposit and walked out with my new iPhone. This year I believe I will be able to do exactly the same but will hand over my 7 and take out a fresh agreement for the 8....as long as I can get that preorder in quick enough of course :(

Is there a special option to collect from store when preordering? I've never seen that as an option before.

I didn't know you could do that, something I'll definitely look into next Friday. Did anyone question you at the Apple Store when you asked to join the upgrade program?

I had one reserved to pick up and it was only when asked how I'd like to pay was I offered the upgrade programme.

This is what I meant too. You can just reserve for instore pickup and the do the IUP when in store.
