Still haven't ordered mine. With the current delivery estimates of 3-4 weeks, I'm tempted to just wait until month-end and see the estimates again. Are people finding the estimates correct?
I was on holiday immediately after the WWDC and only got back last week. All the news of lag shocked me at first and was a little confusing. Finally got round to reading the full Anand review today and had a bit of an enlightenment. All of this lag is around the highest resolution, correct? This seems a moot point from my point of view as I'll be using 'Best for Retina' mode and not the 'More Space'. Am I understanding this rightly? Seems a lot of people's posts on here are very confused.
Also, if this is right, presumably the frames rates are identical when comparing rMBP 'Best for Retina' with normal 2011 MBP?
I can only give you what I saw from the Apple store, but I did spend around 15 minutes playing with it and then a quick comparison to the normal MBPs. (Surprised how busy the Apple store was, yet there were about 7 MBPR's on a table and I was the only one there on it aside from some people glancing quickly. Nor did an Apple rep approach me, which I put down to it probably not being in stock).
But the lag was over-stated. It was a tiny bit choppy on theverge but that is because it is full of rich content, but completely useable. Scrolling at 100mph up and down most normal pages there was barely any lag. Indeed neither did the GUI lag like people are saying. If you were to scroll in normal use, it would be perfectly acceptable. This was at 'best for retina'. The way some people talk about the lag issue on here they make it sound like it is unresponsive to your touch on the trackpad and that it judders everywhere. This was not the case.
Using 1900x1200, it did lag a bit more and there were some general GUI lag, and I think I would agree with Anand. Right now, 1900x1200 is borderline unusable in Lion, but best for retina to me was perfectly acceptable.
Oh, it is also worth noting that this didn't even have the 1gb software update applied. So I imagine if this was applied, it would be even less noticeable. Remember this is lion performance and will only get better once Mountain Lion is released.
However, unfortunately it wasn't to the levels of a normal Macbook Pro. When I compared to the original models, you could tell the MBP scrolled much smoother. Buut, if I hadn't seen the Macbook Pro original performance, I wouldn't have noticed a difference. So I don't think it is anything to worry about unless you are a true perfectionist and like to ping up and down rich content pages at 100mph all the time. I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it myself as I was expecting the worst and to go home and cancel my order. After seeing this thing twice, both times I have left the Apple store content.
