I've successfully upgraded to 10.6.5, but not without some trouble along the way.
First off, something is wrong with the Combo Update from Apple. Every time I try to download it I get the message "Mounting Failed."
I ended up downloading just the regular Update from Apple's support page. Then I ran the dmg and installed everything. Before I restarted I used Cindori's Zeus and downloaded Netkas's QECI patch for the 4890.
Then I restarted. Immediately after hitting the restart button I got a blue screen. It didn't seem like the computer restarted or was installing any updates. The screen just hung in that state. I let it stay like that for about 10 minutes. After that it was pretty clear to me that something was wrong.
I hard shut the computer and pressed the power button. It started, I heard the chime, and took a few moment before showing me another blue screen where it hung for about two minutes. This time it sounded like the computer was doing something and the hard drives were spinning up. Then it got to the screen with the Snow Leopard galaxies (the same screen you get at the login window). Once it got there I still couldn't log in, however. A new window popped up and said an additional installation was needed, and it gave me two options: "Restart" or "Install and Restart."
I chose "Install and Restart." Another message immediately popped up saying there was an error and I had to restart. I restarted. This time everything went fine all the way to the log in screen. I logged in.
Apparently now I'm running 10.6.5. Everything else seems to be running fine as well. No issues thus far.

So, is yours working with QE/CI enabled (checking with Zeus is the easiest way to find out)? If so, could you post the specific model of 4890 and the specific ROM you are using?

I am really curious about this. (also pissed because the 4890 is a very good card, better than the 5770 Apple is selling for an inflated $249!) I don't think the extensions are the problem because replacing them with various older, known-to-work extensions has no effect on the QE/CI problem. I suspected the real changes in the 10.6.5 update might be written into the new mach_kernal, so I tried replacing the 10.6.5 mach-kernal with the old 10.6.4 version... that didn't work, it resulted in a KP. When I have time I'm going to examine the contents of the 10.6.5 update package and see if there is something in there other than the ATI extensions that is messing with our 4890s.

I think you're right, I use the #2 ROM as well. It's worked better than any other one I tried (that is to say, it actually lets me boot in OS X). But it's always been much slower compared to similar tasks in Windows (and yeah I know, Windows is better for 3D games, but even just like Hulu or YouTube full screen will chug/skip/lose sync in OS X, and not in Windows). And yes, the cable warning.
I wonder if no one with our card ever ripped their ROM. Makes me think that if we could just get a legit rip of the original ROM from these things, and add the EFI to it, we'd be able to run 10.6.5 and not get the cable warning, like everyone else with a 4890.
What do you think, Cind? Do you happen to know the origin of the #2 ROM? Maybe it's worth trolling PC gaming forums with a "do you have this card? ----> [pic] if so, please give me ur romz" kind of post.

Cracking the 10.6.5 Update

I'm planning on using Pacifist to install parts of the update one at a time, restarting and reapplying the exotic patch after each, until I find which part is causing the problems with my XFX 4890. I'm pretty sure the Applications and Utilities can be updated safely. As I find parts that seem to be safe I'll post results here. I'm thinking that most of the parts of the 10.6.5 Update can be installed without losing QE/CI.

I had the same issue pop up, updated to 10.6.5 applied QE/CI patch before reboot, came back up with no QE/CI & tearing, applied my old working QE/CI patches I had saved, and I got the blue screen. I couldn’t even get into it via VNC.
So I just bit the bullet and just installed my old x1900 ATI card. It was fun while it lasted, but quite honesty had enough with patches. I'm going to save my money and just get a 5770 or 5890 (depending which one is better for video rendering)
I still have my 4890 if anyone is interested in it. I have it listed on Craigs in my home town for $125, but I'll let it go for $75 + shipping to any of you guys. Just PM me.

I just picked up a XFX 5770 (Will give model no. later) and so far it looks much more promising. (I basically want a PC card that I can flash and it would work with-out using patches) I would have picked up at PC 5890 card but none were advailable in any of the computer stores here. It's currently working via Bootcamp in my MP 1,1 with MP11.005C.B08 bootrom.

I am using Pacifist to install the 10.6.5 update piece by piece. So far I have installed the Applications, Library, mach_kernal, System.kext, and many of the items in the System Library folder. I have enough pieces in place so that About This Mac reads 10.6.5 and Software Update no longer asks to update to it. So far I have not needed to install the exotic patch, the one from my 10.6.4 + Graphics Update is still working.
Ouch, that's discouraging. Well, other people, including my boss and my wife, have unsuccessfully tried to get me to stop wasting time...

Hi. Just install everything from the 10.6.5 update except for the files that correspond to the ones you used to patch your system the last time and the OpenGL and OpenCL framework files.

From the System\Library\Extensions folder I put in the System.kext, the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, and the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementClient.kext. I then added most of the frameworks, avoiding anything that looked remotely graphics related- see screenshot 2. I also added a few other extensions (USB, Bluetooth, etc.) that looked like they had nothing to do with graphics. All the Applications, the Sleep function, and most importantly QE/CI have been tested and are working properly.

That was what I tried at first but it's not that easy, there is at least one other extension in 10.6.5 that is messing up the 4890's video, giving a gray screen at boot. I haven't out exactly which one(s) it is yet.

I'm assuming you guys realize that since it is a kext problem, you can just hold shift and Safe Boot in order to get back in and put working kexts in.
I'm currently rolled back to 10.6.4. :/ I'll probably stay here until I really need 10.6.5 for something or until I want to upgrade the card anyway. Maybe dculp here will find the problematic kext, and we can patch it... 😀
unfortunately I don't have time machine back up or install CD... so I'd like to offer a small incentive (20$ via paypal) to whoever finds a working fix for this issue.
I'm also using #2 Rom from the table (sapphire vapor-x, sku 11150-12, pn 288-1e115-320sa). I only got 10.6.4 QE to work through the mapp installation.

I made a patch for the 4870's. Try using it with Netkas 10.6.4 patch to see if you can get your card working.

It is definitely those two frameworks. Unfortunately you have to use a package to install the frameworks not pacifist(after updating to 10.6.5). I do not believe pacifist optimizes/register the installed files, hence the graphics corruption.

It's a good idea to have at least 3 drives in your MacPro: a boot drive, a bootable backup (created by Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, etc.) and Time Machine backups. I used all these when I was experimenting with the 10.5.6 update. Take advantage of all those holiday sales!

The problems in the 10.5.6 Update seem to be associated with OpenGL, the specific components are located in: System\Library\Frameworks\OpenGL.framework

I used the latest version of Pacifist to install 10.5.6 without these 4 parts and it is working perfectly, no issues with starting up, sleep, or any applications. Kind of strange however, as I was testing it bit by bit on my backup drive everything went smoothly but when I tried install all the working parts all in one step on my main drive it didn't work, I got the blue screen; I erased the main drive and cloned the backup drive to it, it works fine. So, I recommend updating in stages:
1. First and most importantly, back up your current working system and download the latest version of Pacifist (consider registering).
2. Use Pacifist to install everything BUT the System folder. From the System folder use Pacifist to install 3 extensions- AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementClient.kext, and System.kext
Repair permissions and restart.
3. Use Pacifist to install the System Folder, everything BUT Frameworks and Extensions. Repair permissions and restart.
4. Use Pacifist to install System\Library\Frameworks, everything BUT NOT OpenGL.framework
Repair permissions and restart.

Hi. Be mindful that you may need to leave the older graphics extension for other cards as well if you want to use them in your system. The new drivers are not compatible with the older Open GL drivers. I had make sure my patch installed the older graphics extensions for other cards just in case they were needed. Great work by the way.

So is this installation safe, in terms of stability. don't we lose some new enhancements or graphic optimization that come with 10.6.5 ?
If so, can someone tell me what is the best option for replacement. I have a MacPro 1.1. And which thread should I follow to flash the card etc... I mean the new one 🙂

As we're all aware, Apple decided to admit a problem with certain ATI X1900XT graphic cards, after more than four years, and the serial number of my (broken) card turned out to be in the series Apple had declared potentially problematic. I applied to the refund program calling the (German) Apple Store, and was asked to email the bill of my new graphic card (the 4890). I added a screenshot proving that this is the card that actually works in my 1.1 MacPro, and after two months, I find myself refunded of my 4890 !
