An alternative view is Apple could have made this part just as tough, which would have added nothing really significant to the price of a watch already costing the best part of a grand (over here in the UK) upon which they must already be making an eye-watering markup, but instead chose to cheapen-out on this part because it's obviously the least-likely part to be damaged. That unfortunately is so Apple.

And you surely have analyzed this on a material science basis to be quite easy, right? Because you know that the sapphire crystal that makes the top glass so durable has worse light diffraction characteristics than regular glass, right? Which, if used there, might negatively impact the sensors on the back of the Watch, right? Right? 🙄

this is the weakness of sapphire...or glass back...it resists scratches only but diamond...but shatters way easier

Let's be honest ... leaving the backside so exposed to damage is an engineering /design oversight for an outdoor / rugged watch (that needs to get charged regularly, so one has to take it off). Just wait for the next iteration, it will have a shock proof backside as well ... especially when too many claims hit the profits on the AC+, we'll have a new improved version next year.

Yes like „you‘re holding it wrong“ 🤦‍♂️

You do realize that "You're holding it wrong" was not something that was ever said right?

It always bugs me when people quote this line as if its something factual that Jobs said. He never said it.

Every Apple Watch since day one has had the same hump on the underside made from one of two materials. It is kinda indispensable if you want good contact with the wearer. If you are wearing your watch this areas is very protected. This only happened because the owner dropped her watch on a hard surface. I doubt seriously that Apple will be changing this design next year!

Maybe Apple could develop a micro parachute system that will detect a hard surface in a drop and deploy it before it lands on you bathroom tile floor?

I believe what he actually said was "avoid holding it that way."

‘Rule number one is that you never put on or take off your Apple Watch over a hard or tile floor. If you have to put on or take off in the bathroom, hold it over the counter.
Agreed. I wonder if a solo loop or BSL would offer some protection against the back hitting the tile.

Correct. Someone wrote to him "When I hold my phone a certain way it causes the signal to drop." Jobs responded with "Then don't hold it that way."

The "You're holding it wrong" somehow became turned into fact. It started out in Android forums and spilled over as fact and is quoted all the time. Obviously its not a big deal, but just something that bugs me when I see people put it in quotes like its some statement of fact that was said by Jobs.

Unfortunately I didn’t follow this rule and dropped my Ultra on a concrete floor, however, luckily no damage to mine.

It is designed to be rugged while worn. That side is against your wrist. If your watch is hit while wearing it and the back cracks, as others have said, you have bigger issues.
Some people just have no idea what the the words "rugged" or "durable" actually mean.
