This iPhone seems like such a conference room idea. The product of a desperate 'let’s rattle out innovative ideas' brainstorm session. I mean, I could be completely off, but is anyone asking for a thin phone with a camera bump?
If this meets my desired specs I might do my first single year upgrade and go from 16PM to 17 Air. I'd like a lighter big phone.

Its not just a camera bump anymore. They're using the internal space for components that won't fit in the thin body. They'll use the extra volume for a better speaker and better front facing camera.
Yup. The Face ID and front-facing/selfie camera still need room/housing depth, since it seems like Apple hasn't redesigned them yet to be thinner.

So the iPhone Air might be just a thin luxery product (akin to the 2015 MacBook, which should have been an Air), the iPad Air is a mid range thicker product and the MacBook Air is the entry level product.

The Air branding, is all up in the air.
Well they have been actively working to get the 'Air' products to where they need to be i.e. thin and light. Macbook Air M2, they done a great job with that. Now they are making this iPhone Air which is incredibly thin. Next on the agenda is the iPad Air for sure but the iPad Pro M4 is pretty much both the Pro and Air in one device!

Everything sounded reasonable until the last item. Can't imagine Apple doing an off-center usb port. Even without Jobs and Ive, that sounds like a big Apple no-go.
Apples tend to deform when rotten.

But if the iPad Pro can have stereo speakers, the iPhone 17 can too.
Look how large the speakers are in the iPad Pro (it’s the four circles):

Everyone I know puts their phone in a case to make it easier to hold and protect the screen. Those people won’t care if it’s a few millimetres thinner.

I've had a lot of iPhones and never in my life have I wished any of them to be thinner. What is even motivating this product?
I think there are a majority of people who want a lighter large phone, and one way to achieve that with a large screen is to reduce the thickness. With greater efficiency and improved battery technology today, going thinner and lighter makes sense.

I wonder if the speaker will be internal like the MacBook Air. The off center charging port Steve is rolling in his grave. I think it will have MagSafe, I think the iPhone 16e didn't have it because of cost. I just hope the Pro isn't just a spec bump and new colors, don't let this be the gimmick for this round of updates.

Why does the iPhone 17 Air, with a single camera, go inside the elongated camera bump, but the regular iPhone 17, with two cameras, gets placed in no camera bump? Can someone explain that?
Maybe some internals are being relocated into the bump because the main body is so thin.

The iPad Pro 13ā€ is thinner than the iPhone Air and fits both Face ID and front camera. So it’s not clear that this would be a major impediment.

A thinner phone with a case will still be thinner and lighter. I think they might appreciate the thinner and lighter weight.
Maybe. Time will tell. Personally I think most people will continue to buy either the cheapest model or the model with the biggest screen.
