I say that gizmo and engadget who got to handle the iphone should of made a call and put there fingers to figure if it was a proxi sensor
 
You're not crazy, but the Contacts app isn't a new feature of 2.0. The Contacts app is only for the iPhone Simulator in the SDK and the iPod Touch. The reason is because the Contacts is a core service in the SDK, but the simulator doesn't run the Phone app, so it is replaced with contacts. Versions of the 2.0 beta that are actually running on iPhones do not have this.

Not true. Contacts.app is on my iPhone when running the betas.

I hope it stays that way!

As a business person, I often want to access contacts for needed information (addresses, birthdays, etc) - not a phone app, then contacts. Heck, my Contacts app would probably be in the dock.
