maybe i'm wrong but when jobs mentioned the display he said something along the lines of..."and the same gorgeous 3.5 inch display"

when it was time for the camera, he didn't say same 2mp camera. All he said was, " (pause) camera" Viewing a picture of the phone, there would be no way to determine its mp.

i'm thinking surprise 4 or 5 mp..????

im sorry but that would be the most useless waste of power and energy on a device like this.
For a start, the lens, i dont care how good it is, is tiny!
2mp is actually well suited for this size of lens, anything bigger and its a waste of time...

dont get caught in the glitz of higher pixel numbers, it means nothing without a good sized and quality lens..which the iphone doesnt have.

its like the megahertz myth all over again....

guys this is a lot of rubbish..

if you watch the keynote, and invert your screen using Ctrl, Alt, Cmd and 8, you will see no unannounced sensors on the face of the phone..

stop dreaming...

agree with yoiu 110%...

Mega pixels means zeroooooooooooo if you know anything about camera's esp when being this small.

If you really want to get techy lets talk about shutter speed and F/stop...
Why cant they put a 1.4 or 1.8 lens in my iphone??? I need a shutter speed of atleast 1/125 to stop someone...1/60 atleast for no blurred standing in front with proper lighting...Come on Apple atleast give me this

Phone cameras are HORRIBLE

I don't get this obsession some of you have with videoconferencing.

Do you have ANY idea how annoying a hand held cam conference would be? And when would you ever do it on your phone? People use cell phone's mostly while doing something else, where something else is walking, driving, typing on a computer, eating. You're telling me you're going to really want to look at your phone while doing these things and make sure to keep the phone stable so the video doesn't bounce around? People don't even use videoconference much on their PCs, cause there's no demand and who really wants to look at a person you're talking to? Maybe if you have family you haven't seen in Nambia or some place and they just got access to a computer with internet, but then you can do them the dignity of videoconferncing in the privacy of your home.. on your PC!

He paused because he's probably not particularly proud of the ****** 2MP camera, and didn't bring attention to it. Why make a big deal out of something that hasn't been upgraded and clearly should be.

When I do this I see the 2 dots in question, then see nothing but the speaker which means no sensors/holes show up with your negative image idea.

No. How would this be any more annoying than using a video camera? Do you find that annoying? Trying to shoot video with something that you have to hold with your hand?

And when would you ever do it on your phone?
Whenever I could. My fiance is holed up in Medical School residency 12 hours a day. We'd love this ability to "see" each other a few times a day, as apposed to only on the weekends.

Well you obviously wouldn't video conference while you were driving your car...That should go without saying.

What? There's "no demand?" Yeah, look at how text messaging has failed. Who would ever want to READ something someone is saying to you, as apposed to just hear them say it. I do use video conferencing on my PC, and I'm a person, so that shoots that theory down.

I'm generally confused by this.

In conclusion.....I'd use the hell out this feature if it were to come to the iPhone.

Not only would I really like a front facing camera for iChat with video, I think it would also be great to have Photobooth for taking fun pictures with others (it's not easy to take a good self portrait when you can't see the display).

Photobooth on the iPhone. That would be cool.

I'm not sue about extra sensors or a front camera but I think they are holding something back.

Although its only a month to launch, why give away all your specs to the competition so they can start their advertising campaigns against the iphone?

He never demoed the phones music player, photos, anything apart from a bit on the GPS as if he didn't really want to give much away.

Just watching slide to unlock would have got a round of applause but he never did this which was strange

32MB? Extra Mp (although why, its pointless) video, front camera, something.

To keep something up their sleeves apple could render all the carefully thought out anti iphone plans useless.

It would also tip the hype over the edge into hysteria.

I saw the keynote and he never said "And One More Thing"- I think he's saving it until July 11th or later this month.

I agree.

It was an unsually flat keynote I thought. They held something back.

Why did he even bother highlighting the camera if it hasn't changed?

Why the need to do a commercial in Hawaii? Set up for iChat ..... on the iPhone!

if there was a front view camera. and you can do video chat.....

att would charge you 40/month because they are greedy bastards.

Greedy for raising our prices to the same cost of all other 3G data plans? I'll STILL be paying less for this plan than I did my old BlackBerry plan. I understand the emotion, but PLEASE!

i agree that a number of people would use video conferencing. but most (my guess 95%) people would not or only a few times in the beginning because it's new. and apple has alway been careful to not add too many features to their devices.

in addition video conferencing would need an aditional feature to the contracts. it won't be included for free in voice or data.

and as long as apple can't negotiate a reasonable price for video conferencing across 70 nations they won't spend money and resources to integrate an extra camera into the iphone. even if some people want it. maybe the iphone G8 in 2013 has it.

How about only allowing it through a WiFi connection? Then they wouldn't have to worry about a cost being associated with it through a data plan.

Extra sensor might be another proximity sensor due to swithing og 3g while the phone is nead the ear. ie not surfing the net. this would save some energy as you might spend quite a bit talking per day.

Thats still a proximity sensor. You don't need two sensors that do the same thing. It certainly wouldn't save battery power to have two pieces of hardware that do exactly the same job!

Not to get off topic but, how funny would it be to know that Steve Jobs may be reading this very thread, and laughing his ass off because people are creating theories for a possible front camera.

Have we seen/heard anything about that supposed Hawaii commercial yet?
Apple 3G iPhone iChat. Now coming without backdrops, so we had to film in Hawaii...

If I was a fanboy, i'd bejumping on the fact that not all is know of the phone already. I hear that video is coming to the iPhone as per a O2 rep, who I had a chat with today. They're pretty clued up if you caht. Sh'ed just come back from training... ;)

If all the peripherals show an expanded cut out space at the top of the iPhone casing, that's a sign. Surely that's a sign.... ;)

youtube video

to the person who wrote about the protective cover and the bubble....a bubble is shaped like this " ) " when light hits off it it scatters it and warps the reflect light...when the above lighting on the stage hits the upper left hand corver it reflects back on a flat plane...i genuinly do not think thats a bubble!!!!

my money is on a big finish from mr. jobs....front camera, GB size upgrade...my two cents folks!

I don't know how likely that smudge is actually a camera, but it isn't like Apple hasn't done this before. When they announced the iPhone Steve said it had a plastic layer on top of the touch screen, and also that it got X amount of talk time.

Then, after the hype died down, they announced that it had a higher quality glass layer, and Y hours of talk time. They knew they weren't going to use plastic and that it had better battery life, they just wanted something to talk about later.

I don't think this is what will happen with the camera, but it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for Steve to deliberately skip announcing features to drum up hype closer to the release.

If Apple can send out dummy handsets to testers etc, they could sure as heckers get their "iMabigmysterious cable" plugged in for demos, they can make some v1's in v2's shape. Or a feature lacking v2.

I think needthephone might have a point. The keynote was for Enterprise to a large part. What did the consumer get Monkeyfrickinballsall. There were some interesting apps. But boy did it seem like they dragged it out. And they did. I think it was past the 1 hour 5-10 minutes mark, before they even stopped talking about a scientific calculator function, and said happy birthday. If someone can knock up a sellable app in a few weeks, with 1-4 employees, I think it's kinda indicative of what Apple could be doing in the background. Apps take time, and they could always drop them to us come MWSF 09. Then Snow Leopard roughly WWDC 09. I sure hope the beatching will have moved on from MMS...
Why no music demo? Nothing really on geotagging? Sweet nothing much on Google (and we sure as heck know Google's burning midnight oil on both sides (Apple apps/general apps, and Android).
With mobileme in the works, etc, they have enough on their plate. But I think there's still odds on for some fair decent suprises (and most of us know heart of hearts we'd just get that iVideo message mirror dock they made I think for an iLounge competition).

Let's face it the only reason you would want an ichat camera in your iPhone is to video your naked aroused crotch whilst looking at someone else on an iPhone video'ing their naked aroused crotch...that would officially make the iPhone a sex toy...
