These sensors are no secret... The ones on the first page anyway.

I don't think that there will be front facing camera. Given the history with the iSight it's possible, but i just don't think there will be.

If this were a real iPhone case it would cover the existing sensors on iPhone v1 which are located above the ear speaker (off center to the right). Perhaps Apple relocated these sensors on the iPhone 3G to the left where the openings are on the case...not really a front facing camera.

I hope a front facing camera is true for iChat but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I SWEAR I read on here a story a while ago that said that iPhone OS 2.0 had the contacts app on the home screen now just like iPod Touch does but I can't find it here on macrumors, however I know I am not crazy cause I found the story here at this link:

http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2008/03/31/iphone-os-20-leaks-gets-contacts-application-warning/

It says: "New features in the iPhone OS 2.0 release are sparse. Most significantly, there is now a “Contacts” application. Traditionally, contacts have been accessible only through the Phone application."

So what happened to that??? Can any devs in here with the 2.0 firmware confirm? Why are there all these lingering questions after the keynote?

I know it may seem naive but I am really beginning to think that Apple will announce a few more things when the iPhone launches on July 11th like they did with the first one and the YouTube & glass screen etc. I dunno about a cam and iChat though, that seems like a big stretch!

You're not crazy, but the Contacts app isn't a new feature of 2.0. The Contacts app is only for the iPhone Simulator in the SDK and the iPod Touch. The reason is because the Contacts is a core service in the SDK, but the simulator doesn't run the Phone app, so it is replaced with contacts. Versions of the 2.0 beta that are actually running on iPhones do not have this.

^Uh...I'm fairly certain that the proximity sensor has not been moved. Isn't it that speaker-like thing above the screen?

The speaker is the speaker. The sensors were above the speaker butt-up to the silver bezel. They are now moved. IDK why though. But for sure moved it seems.

They are hard to see in anything but bright sun/light or a flashlight. I question if Giz/Engadget could see any hole for a camera under the black glass without trying hard - OR, if the phone they handled was really 'the' phone.

I just can't figure out why they'd move the sensors though.

In another note, isn't that pink case just the fugliest thing ever? Probably just a tester.

those pictures do seem convincing which highlight the unannounced sensors. Maybe in order to get hype up right around the launch date they will announce iChat. Making the 199.00 price tag much more of an impulse buy.

whether or not these unannounced sensors are true, no third party would be able to create a mms app and call it iChat because of trademarks right? so if not by July 11th, if apple wanted to develop videoconferencing they could develop a native iChat app to mirror the os x platform ?

iChat is Apple's. And I would guess that when we see iChat for iPhone we see iChat for Windows.

They never put cases on the iphone that is up on the stage though.. I assumed that it was used to cover the new phone so people would think it's an old one. Why would they present on an old iphone when they have the new one at their fingertips?

then why did they have a protective case on it. i think it was so they could hide the black back before they announced it.

Admittedly, I thought the case was strange as well. But the 2.0 firmware will run on the original iPhone, as will everything which was demoed. So the same applies, Why would they present on a new iPhone when the old one works exactly the same.

THOSE WERE THE IPHONE 3G PEOPLE!!! Get your eyes checked geeze! Can you not see the new chrome bezel that is not as thick??? The iPhone 1.0 has almost no space between the chrome bezel and the screen, the new iPhone 3G has a noticeable space between the new thinner chrome bezel and the screen which I am not crazy about, it is like the Touch now, it doesn't look as good imo. It is beyond obvious that they put those covers on them to hide the new design. Discussion over!

maybe i'm wrong but when jobs mentioned the display he said something along the lines of..."and the same gorgeous 3.5 inch display"

when it was time for the camera, he didn't say same 2mp camera. All he said was, " (pause) camera" Viewing a picture of the phone, there would be no way to determine its mp.

i'm thinking surprise 4 or 5 mp..????

that'd be pretty sweet.. even though people with hands on time said they didnt notice any camera improvements :(

Would be nice...

I suppose since they're not selling yet and it is an improvement, they can update their website at the last minute. Because the website says 2MP.

Not to fuel the fire of speculation, but Apple could have easily had a few phones made WITHOUT ALL the features that the ones to be sold on July 11. Remember that field testing had to be done. They wouldn't need the final product to test the phone/GPS side of the device.

If all this does go down to have Stevie anounce the infamous "and one, or two more things" before the release date, I wouldn't be suprised.

It would be so Apple-like. We'll just have to wait and see.

Demo Phone

The demo phone they used was the new 3G iPhone. If you look at all the pictures of the 3G iPhone, the black area on the side of each screen is wider than the original iPhone, indicating that the new iPhone is slightly wider then the first gen. If you look at the video of the phone they're using on stage, it's clearly the 3G iPhone.

I believe the Sensors have been moved from the original spot because of the GPS. They said the aluminum rings around the headphone jack and the camera were antennas (I believe the Apple site says this) so therefore the GPS or whatever would be taking up that space

OR

2. They realized more people use cases and that the proximity sensor would work with the case on the phone when talking on it. (with my case it doesn't always turn off the screen therefore leading me to mute or speaker phone)

Also, I admit the whole introduction of the new phone seemed rushed almost like: "and thats the software 2.0, oh yea iphone 3g in stores in july 11" I believe something else is in store for the iPhone 3G and that the hands on phones weren't the final product.. and it was odd Steve didn't hold one up.. also was weird he started off by showing the side of the phone..(everyone laughed maybe knowing he was teasing them)

Extra sensor might be another proximity sensor due to swithing og 3g while the phone is nead the ear. ie not surfing the net. this would save some energy as you might spend quite a bit talking per day.

Hey wait look at this comes from Apples Website

iPhone makes it possible for the world’s best developers to create applications that are nothing short of amazing. Designed to leverage the groundbreaking technology in iPhone — like the Multi-Touch interface, the accelerometer, GPS, real-time 3D graphics, and 3D positional audio — these applications are unlike anything you’ve ever seen on a mobile phone. And they’re coming soon, right to your Home screen

3D positional audio???? Maybe thats what your seeing....Surroung sound on the the iphone...

I thinik everyone is reaching with the video portion...
YouTube was and application at the last minute so easy to put in..
Glass screen probably not that hard at the last minute and that was a production thing.

Video and getting approval different ballgame...

There was going to be a third thing which was never discussed but several tech guys (Gizmodo and such) have had hands on without stating a camera.

My wife works for Marketing Team out of New York that does cost analysis for computers and such. Her team members were able to demo the phone also stating no camera on front...

Sorry guys dont think its going to happen all though it would be ausome

Oh yes if you watch the Utube video again that is clearly a bubble in the protective screen....If you have used a protective sceen you know what Im talking about...
