The GeForce 9400M can decode 1080p on chip. I think you just need drivers and software that is hardware-accelerated. No need to worry about CPU speed, as even the Atom + 9400M was able to keep up with decoding 1080P video.

Look, I can bash Apple with the best of them, from Apple, we saw them take a crappy GPU INTEL GMA on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd GEN WHITE MACBOOK and see the OPEN GL go from 70%, 120% to 171% with Leopard, but still no games, but you could run MOTION and PRO APPS (reported on BAREFEAT.com), nothing else mattered, no games, no fast dedicated GPU, so what did APPLE do? They released another GMA X 300 or X1300 and the benchmarks went from 171% DOWN DOWN DOWN to 70% making PRO APPS useless. Point is, laptops sell the most, PC or MAC.

Now, for the 1st time, not sure what the benchmarks are but if it does what I think it does, the MINI has just become a mini studio, PRO AUDIO (Firewire), Video (FIREWIRE) and ability to run Pro Applications, Motion, Adobe Illustrator - to me, that's a big deal. Not that I need a MINI but its nice to know that you can throw a few hundered down and throw them in edit bays, 2,3,4 and have a machine capable of running PRO APPS and FIREWIRE AUDIO devices. This is a huge deal. You can have two (2) machines for the price of one iMac.

This is a great back up device to, you can daisy chain them and create servers if you wanted, heck, if you don't mind voiding the warranty, take the HD out and put in larger HD, although w/FIREWIRE, you can have 10+ external HD's and a audio/video firewire device on one machine.

It really is a big deal, will have to wait to see the bench marks but if it runs any pro app and has firewire and comes un under $<1000.00 US, this is a huge step for Apple.

I will agree given the economy, they may not sell, simple economics, people want a DVR, COMPUTER, all in one device these days if they are going to plop down $$$ in the worst economy in almost 70 years.

Shame the laptops still lack 1394 (non mb pro).

Guess Apple realizes that since laptops sell much more, then can do what they want.

Hey everyone,

I honestly just registered to post.
I have been visiting Mac Rumors for a few months now but preffered to lurk...

Im currently a PC user, and have been thinking of switching over to a Mac, when I heard that the Mini was close to being updated I was excited since I thought it would make the transition easy for me, but Im dissapointed with the update.

Sure, there are some improvements with the speed, but I hated the look of the old mini, and was hoping for something... well, that more closely resembled the new Macs, maybe a black, glass top with white apple symbol or something and replacing the plastic in back with something similar. Then, not only would it have been sexy, it would have matched my PC Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse! (Im all about matching parts.)

However, I live in Canada and its simply not worth the 729$, in my opinion.

However, I didnt just come on here to complain.
While the Mac mini has left me a little sad, I have now turned my attention to the Macbook's.

I do miss having a laptop, and I would be willing to shell out a little bit more money (when the funds are available) for a machine that I personally, think is better. So, Apple seems to have won this round!

So... now Im thinking of the Macbook for 1,749 base model, no extras.
Its much more worth it than either mini. Now... just gotta hope I get a fantastic tax refund!

I'm trying to understand the logic of the mini + 24" display (one of the purchase options from Apple)

There really isn't a good reason to buy a mini with an Apple display, but you can save a bundle with third party displays. If I were building a Mac system from scratch I'd do something like this:
Base mini, $599
4 GB RAM, $65
2 Dell 22" 1680x1050 LCDs, $308
Mini-DisplayPort to DVI adaptor (for the 2nd display), $29
1TB FireWire 800 hard drive, $180
Decent keyboard+mouse, $50

Total $1231 which compares well to the $1500 iMac: slower CPU, but more total screen space and storage, and the parts can be easily reused later. Even if you pay Apple $150 for the RAM instead of installing it yourself it's a decent deal.

Lotta complaints about price. Did you really expect Apple to increase the specs...and lower the price at the same time?

...

Apple has always charged more than the competition, and they always will, and they make a tidy profit by doing so.

Yes, I expect Apple to increase the specs and lower the price at the same time. This is how the PC industry has worked since it was born.

And no, I don't think that Apple's business model will be sustainable for much longer. They are now only selling PCs in designer clothing, and the word HACKINTOSH is out and more and more people begin to realize that they get a much better value for their bucks when they just get one of those and install OS X on non-Apple hardware. And unless you live in the US, there won't even be any legal issues with that.

Apple would be well advised to quickly wake up to those realities or it's going to be the 1990s all over again for them. But to be honest, I don't think they really care anymore for their computer business. They only want to sell digital content and playback gadgets. The Mac's dead, because Apple lets it die.

Nice breakdown on the prices and parts. I'll be showing this to anyone that wants a new Mac now. :D

I've been pushing the Mac mini hard to some on the edge switchers. They were patient enough to wait for ant update too!

A $600 Mac that supports dual displays, neither of which is integrated with the machine, is exactly what I want.

I could care less what the rest of the specs are because when you buy a mac you know that even the base machine will prove more than capable with day-to-day tasks.

And yes, the price might be a little high, but not too high. This will keep me from switching back to PC when I go to buy a new system.

And no one noticed...they removed the Apple Remote.

We bought a mini a few weeks ago, the 1.8 base model. Saw the new one today. I called Apple and we took it back for a new 2ghz base model.

Got it home, got it setup, loaded Plex, went to grab the remote....looked in the box, looked around my desk...

Not there anymore.

As far as price, its very expensive for a bunch of laptop parts...but I needed a XP machine for doing data recovery and figured it would not hurt to have a Mac. So I paid the premium rather than sling another desktop under the desk for me to bang into.

Plus if you have an ioGear 4 port KVM it is IDENTICAL the the Mini but 1/2 the height. The mini stacks on top of mine and they look made for each other.

For only being a small bump in processor speed the whole machine feels much faster and the power consumption is a big plus.

We run a home based consulting business and our electrical bill is astronomical with a few servers, test equipment, etc...being able to put in a mini at extremely low power consumption does make a difference if your running multiple machines.

If I was spending $600 on a box alone the Mini wouldn't even come close to touching it. But it serves its place and the Kool Aid is good at Apple :) I absolutely love the 'ease of use' stuff, then when something goes wrong and you need to go into a shell everyone keeps that happy smile on their face.

The Mini could make a very nice, cool-running, quiet HTPC.

It does make a great little quiet sbs 2003 server for small office use. External HD to hold the Exch DBs and another for backup... its very quiet and quite usable in performance load with 10 people on it.

I just wish I could locate a bluetooth driver for it that worked with SBS 2003.

Boycott

I say we boycott in protest. Severely unhappy... especially after holding out for so long.

Get a Dell or HP 30" please.

Mr Maul, while it's true Apple gained marketshare, it's also true that IT deployment never embrassed Vista and nor did the public. Additionally, FireWire video and audio drivers took years to work fir vista and many recording audio people switched to mac, especially since samplers are on both max and PC. That said, Apple lost thousands with no FireWire on the MacBook especially since they really didn't want pro apps running on laptops, I don't want to go there, anyway fwiw, win7 is leaps above vista, works out of box with 1000's if drivers, works on old slow machines and IT deployment is taking win7 very serious. Meanwhile, apple can't get exchange or push to work properly and they only have to deal with their own hardware.

While I embrace FireWire and good gpu (mini), if they bench ark good we will see minis in a lot of studios but I think apple will LOSE a lot of marketshare. This is the one time in a global setting, that consumers simply will not buy. Compound that with all the buzz win7 is getting and you could be looking at apple at 5% in a year. All that has to happen is HP or vodko to make a mini DVR PC and out spec it and it will sell.

Apple lost a lot of desktop market last qtr. Add that MacBooks lack FireWire which many musicians and mom/pop bought for camcord and the recent prices I see a large blunder by apple this time around.

As well mac pro should have been i7 chips with cheaper memory/more cores.

I think Apple is losing it.

EDIT: As an iPhone user, I also forgot to add, add in that millions of people are coming up on their 2 year anniversary with AT&T with newer Android and Palm Pre's coming (which play flash movies, ala HULU on your phone), plus the prediction that all major players will have APP stores and this spells NIGHTMARE for Apple.

All their profits went back into the consumer, Apple 1 to 1 went from SHAKE, MOTION to most trainers just knowing iLife and how to add email attachments, smuggin not only the PRO user, but also the CONSUMER by releasing Macbooks with no firewire for their niece, nephews, grandsons video capture - these people (in addition to musicians), were pretty peeved.

I see Apple not doing so well. Look for $60 target if they don't revamp and price cut - sorry Apple, this is global and these updates (except mini with firewire, wait for benchmarks for GPU, as they will end up in editing, audio rooms), problem is, for years, while Steve said he envisioned the iMac in every consumers house, Apple only had 2.5% and the only places you saw iMacs were in Studios, Agencys, and fu fu houses (high end design, even if it was for the secretary)... I see Apple going back to this in a hurry. The economy won't provide for Apple to stay in the black.

My .03 cents.

Oh man, how silly must the people who screamed "fake!!!" feel now :D

hahahahahaha!

I thought it was fake and I don't feel silly in the slightest. Why would anyone claiming it was fake feel silly? I thought it was fake for many reasons. There were several questionable things about the leaked photos, Apple has a history of giving their consumer-level machines makeovers to maintain a similar look, and we've seen more convincing fakes in the past. I may have been wrong but I was basing it on logic, available evidence and rumors history. I'll never feel silly about being rational.

From my perspective, everyone who was getting over-emotional and defensive about the leaked images being real without having a shred of evidence or reason on their side are the ones who should feel silly.

Either way, I still say Apple holding on to a stale design like that is really out of character and a little disappointing. Imagine how awesome the Mini would look with the iMac/iPhone aesthetic.

I see several people talk about the new Mini being able to drive two displays. I realize it has two different display connectors, but - can anyone point to an authoritative statement that it's not just either/or with the display connectors?

I'm just curious - it's not a make-or-break issue for me.

From the Mac Mini tech specs...

"Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on a DVI or VGA display; up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)".

Question:

The Mac Mini has 2 display outputs now. Can it actually run two large displays in extended desktop mode?

I'm aware I'd need a mini-DVI to DVI adapter plus a mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter. (I don't want to use VGA at all if I can avoid it). I can imagine you can't use both adapters at the same time because the plug of one or both is too big (think USB flash drives and Macbook USB ports) or some other hurdle.

Anyone know what the maximum supported dual display resolution is? Running 2 24" displays would be sweet for audio and graphics people as well as programmers. I love the Mac Mini because it's super quiet and does not take away any space under the desk. You could just have it between the monitors' foot stands.

Nahh i don't like cheep plastic. I like metel and something that preforms well have is aesthetically pleasing.

I like the Dell Ultrasharps a lot because they're adjustable in many ways (height, rotation, tilt, etc.) and can be used with normal PCs, too. It's nice to have your display in portrait mode for text and photo editing or if you want to see more tracks in a video or audio editing software.

My only real gripe is the colorful LEDs on the front... messes up your color perception. I usually cover it up with some play dough when I do photo editing. The Apples look nice but the tech is pretty dated and overpriced right now.

2.0 GHz
2GB Ram
320 HDD
GeForce 9400M 256 MB
--------------------------
799 Euros ?????
that's about US$ 1000

Are they f*cking crazy ????

Apple knows that people are willing to pay extra to get anything from Apple, and as long as people pay that extra we won't get cheaper computers. Although Apple's latest quarter wasn't that good, the sales drop wasn't as bad as other manufacturers had. When people stop paying that Apple extra and buy PC's instead, Apple has to do something for the prices... but as long as sales are good, there's no need to lower the margins.

Wow I Can't believe that the new mins here but I wonder why it took so long? Can't wait to check out a display model. whoo hoo!:):)

Yes, it drives 2 displays just fine.

Lot of nonsense going on about the Mini Displayport to DVI cable, I've seen several posts claiming that it costs $100, but mine was just 29 Euro (official Apple one too).

Question:

Anyone know what the maximum supported dual display resolution is?

I think the mini DVI output may be limited to 1920x1200 but I'm not completely sure about that. The mini displayport output should support dual link DVI.

The Mini could make a very nice, cool-running, quiet HTPC.

Unfortunately, even with the new NVDIA chipset, I am wondering if the 2.0 CPU can run comfortably a BluRay movie. Running Vista, of course, since OS X still doesn't support BluRay playback.

I think Apple kind of missed the boat on this one, both in terms of software and hardware. Too bad, really, since the first Intel Mac Minis (back when) were really a good buy, IMO. But times have changed.

the old mac mini 2.0GHz could play bluray perfectly fine. you have nothing to worry about.
