went to the store to check out the new ipods. The nanos are way to small for normal use or anything really. i hated the few minutes i played with it and instantly went to the Touch.

Originally I was fairly worried that Apple were attempting to bring touchscreens to these devices, which just seemed too small.

But looks like they've managed to pull it off, and now it's iOS this opens up the possibility for Apps that will work well with this iPod, like the Nike App, and especially Bleep Tests.

It isn't running iOS, just an iOS look-alike. The reviews mention that specifically.

if only the Nano did Facetime, we would have a true "James Bond" watch

Did anyone notice that Apple is giving us less and less extras each gen-with the ipod touch

1st Gen-we got a Plastic iPod stand and a really nice cleaning cloth
2nd Gen-We just got an okay cleaning cloth
3rd-Gen-we got the mic headphones and an a okay cleaning cloth
4th Gen-No extras

Apple is svaing on the cost yet were still paying the same:confused:

The iPod nano is not actually running iOS, just an OS designed to look and behave similarly. (Multiple sources are reporting this. Engadget is one.)

It doesn't look like it does but the new Touch does have a built in mic.

Yeah I know, but I'd have liked to use the remote or the mic for voice control when its in the pocket.

Then again, I only want to use the terrible headphones because my sennheisers got stolen.

Are the current headphones still as terrible as the ones included with the 2nd one?

The Touch is nice... Not a huge fan of the Nano but I can see where Apple is going with it. I wish the UI was more setup like the past Nanos, just with touch based input instead. I think the iOSish UI seems kind of out of place.

I'm really anxious to see what Apple does with the Classic! I need one but I want to wait and see what they have in store for the next model.

Who actually cares about unboxing? It's the most moronic thing on internet outside of girls and cups and cats with words on.

Seriously. Sure, take pictures of the product working, make videos, but "unboxing". How about "purchase receipt scanning and showing" or "handling in the store" pictures.

I agree..girls with words on are extremely moronic: I don't want to see anything on the girls :D

Amen brother. It's pretty toe-curling to watch adults get this worked up about something so trivial as a box.

Unexpected early delivery of iPod touch

Yayyy....I knew it had shipped, but it wasn't due to be delivered until Friday. Fedex just showed up though - my kids will be thrilled...

No more dock

I still have my ancient 2nd generation shuffle (that I bought from Apple's refurb page), and it actually came with a little dock. The new ones don't, which saves costs, reduces packaging size requirements, and is more "green" overall. And frankly, my iPhone 4 didn't come with a dock, so why should the shuffle (or nano or touch)?

Apple worked hard to differentiate the nano

I was surprised to see the nano shrink so much. I expected a slightly larger screen than the previous generation, with multi-touch and a virtual click wheel.

Apple clearly positioned the nano far below the touch in terms of screen size and features. But it wasn't easy. It must have taken a huge amount of effort to design the new nano OS. There is a small chance that it's all-new code, but that seems unlikely. I think it's either iPod OS upgraded with touch screen code or iOS cut down drastically. I think the mini-iOS concept is better.

Why iOS? Because if it is a mini-iOS, Apple can add nano sales to its overall iOS sales numbers from now on. The touch out-sells the nano now, but nano sales are still strong. And why are iOS sales numbers so imporant? Because iOS is the platform for iAd, and the more eyeballs there are on each iAd, the more Apple can charge its advertisers.

Right now there's no need for iAd on the nano. But as hardware margins drop over the next decade or so, Apple will need to generate revenue from non-hardware sources. I think that's the real reason why they created iAd. (And why they created Apple TV as well, once the App Store is available on it, but that's another story...)
