I think it's either iPod OS upgraded with touch screen code or iOS cut down drastically. I think the mini-iOS concept is better.
They've already expressly said that it wasn't iOS but a custom iPod OS that was made to look as close to iOS as they could. Hopefully though they had the foresight to make it possible to add additional applets in so they could expand it down the line and potentialy have an App Store for it. Even with the limited screen real estate I can think of a number of useful apps for it. It will definitely be interesting to see how long it takes until someone 'jailbreaks' a Nano to put their own custom apps on it...

The Shuffle box looks like a capsule toy.

And I think the Nano should be a little bigger (at least the same size as the screen of the 5th gen Nano) to find a better middle spot between the Shuffle and Touch. Now it's lacking too much features to be called a Nano and feel like a overpriced Shuffle with a screen.

The new nano is perfect for us gym goers. I held off buying last years model of the shuffle because it didn't have any buttons. However the nano is only slightly larger than the new shuffle but adds the possibility to select specific songs, rather than just playlists. So for this I think it's perfect.

The nano used to be great because it combined the benefits of the shuffle and classic. The nano used to be practical and portable. Now it's pretty and portable.

With the old nano, you had portability, a screen when you needed one, and buttons/clickwheel for doing operations without looking at the device. This made the old nano perfect as a workout device and general music player, so it was the perfect replacement for the iPod Classic + Shuffle combo.

I'm sure it will sell well just based on the novelty factor, but it's really too bad that such a solid device has strayed so far from the basic things it excelled at.

My iPod Touch just arrived here in MN. Totally slim and sexy!

How did you get yours so fast? I ordered mine 20 minutes after the store went live after the Keynote last week and optioned for overnight delivery, and according to my order status it hasn't even shipped yet. It says to expect delivery on Friday. I would have expected to get it the same day as the Apple stores. Pretty lame.

I don't think it should matter but I ordered while Coldplay was still droning on.
I refreshed the store a few times and literally watched the graphics get scrambled, then reassemble into the updated version of the store.

I got the same email saying it wouldn't arrive till Friday.

Here is my tracking info:

Actually I ordered while Coldplay was on too. But I got the 64GB model - maybe they made less of those or something. Funny you got the Friday delivery notice. When did the FEDEX info actually update? Sometimes I've ordered from Apple and they say "not yet shipped" and then it shows up the same day.

I ordered the 32, never really needed more than that. I don't know when exactly it updated, all I know is whats on the tracking record. Yesterday in the morning it said it had left china. Today after lunch it said it was in my home town. Crazy!

I am never one of the early deliveries, I am always the guy thats waiting that extra day or two while everyone else posts photos and makes sweet love to there new Tech. Feels great!

Honestly I think this form factor is way better as a gym iPod. I guess it also depends on your workout as well, but I always hate having my iPhone in my pocket with heavy dumbells resting on top for any type of pressing movement. With the new nano, I can clip it somewhere where it's out of the way and go on about my business in the gym.

Disappointed

I went to my local Apple Store to check out the new nano and iPod Touch. I did not like the nano because the size is too small for my fingers. Another thing, when I scrolled with my thumb, I did not have a problem choosing a particular item or moving to the next slide. However, when I used my index finger and hold the nano in the other hand and depending on the condition of your finger (moist, dry, etc.), it can be a hassle to use.
I could not use the iPod Touch very much. The reason was every one on display needed to be connected to iTunes. That put a frown on my face. I couldn't get a chance to see the screen, facetime and all that good stuff. At the same time, I don't know if this is because all the iPod Touch models on display needed to connect to iTunes, but I was not excited all that much to see the new iPod Touch.

went to the store to check out the new ipods. The nanos are way to small for normal use or anything really. i hated the few minutes i played with it and instantly went to the Touch.

This is probably what Apple hoped - that many would-be buyers of the old stye nano would be upsold to the touch. It's a shame if Apple's design decisions are based so crudely on optimising profit, rather than producing great products (as has previously been the case).

It is a proven fact at this point that the iPod touch is more than likely cannibalizing the sales of all other iPods. Chances are the camera on the last gen iPod nano didn't do a whole lot to reverse this. I'm sure Apple is honestly just trying to truly differentiate this nano from all others in hopes of regaining lost nano sales. Apple won't wait time, money, and their resources on a new nano just to try and sway everyone to the touch instead. That just makes no sense, isn't very logical.

hahaha

the new nano will be the biggest fail since the nano fatty (3g), it's not as ugly as the fatty, but the design still sucks, looks a bit like an asia rip off and the price is ridiculous...

how many million you wanna bet get sold?

Does the nano have an accelerometer? if not they should definitely put one in the next model, so no matter how you pick it up, the screen is always in the right position. if they could perfect how that works it would be totally awesome.

Given that it has a pedometer app on it, I would presume that it does have an accelerometer of some sort. Whether it's of the variety to actually detect the orientation of the device though is another story.

Honestly though, I don't think it needs it- or it would REALLY need to be able to be disabled to hold one orientation. The Nano is intended to be clipped on to your clothing (or something similar), which means that you're likely going to spend at least a modest bit of time effectively looking at it upside down (clipped to the front of a shirt and looking down at it). Their decision to allow you to rotate the display manually was at least IMO a very smart move- you're not limited in how you can wear it by the clip and screen not matching up with how you want to view it, but you also won't be cursing it for the accelerometer thinking that it should be in one orientation when you WANT it to be 'upside down'.

that must explain why ever apple store in the atlanta area is sold out right?
