Apple is unlikely to move Face ID components under the iPhone's display until 2025 at the earliest, according to display industry consultant Ross Young, who has a very good track record with display-related information about future Apple products.

Young had previously expected Apple to launch its first iPhone with under-display Face ID in 2024, but he now believes the timeframe has been pushed back to 2025 at the earliest due to "sensor issues," per a tweet he shared today. This means the so-called "iPhone 17 Pro" could be the first model with Face ID hidden under the display, but he still expects there to be a hole in the display for the front camera on the device.

Young's revised timeframe contradicts a report from Korean publication The Elec claiming that under-display Face ID would launch on the iPhone 16 Pro next year. Young is typically accurate, so the technology is more likely to be at least two years away.

In the meantime, it has been widely rumored that Apple will expand the Dynamic Island to all four iPhone 15 models, after introducing the feature on the iPhone 14 Pro models last year. If and when iPhones with under-display Face ID finally arrive, it is possible that the Dynamic Island will remain an optional software feature.

Young previously claimed that the iPhone could adopt an all-screen design with both Face ID and the front camera moved under the display in 2026 at the earliest.

Imagine if Apple introduced the world with "Under-Display Touch ID' 🤯
Touch ID literally fails me daily. I am constantly deleting and adding fingerprints on both of my Touch ID devices. The new fingerprint works for a day or two and then I have to do it all over again. I have no love whatsoever for Touch ID. I think it’s hot garbage. Face ID never fails me. Ever. I have no clue why anyone would want Touch ID, under the screen or not.

They also need to stretch out these features over multiple years to ensure you upgrade multiple times.

I however don't see an under the display selfie camera being as good as one that isn't cover by pixels anytime soon. I also am not that familiar with the tech so I could be wrong.

Next major change would possily be a smaller DI cut out.

I'd love to see the secret list of features by year. It probably goes out 20-30+ years.

How unrealistic are people to expect an under-display front-facing camera? On normal cameras without anything obscuring them, even slight dust and fingerprints can cause poor images. A screen on top of a camera will obscure the lens much more than dust and fingerprints.

Nubia 50 Ultra and Zte Axon 40 Ultra have Zte’s 4th generation under display camera tech. And it has been improving just like phones were improving back in the day each gen significant imo. So for apple to not just implement it fully when the time comes would be asinine. Frankly. No punch hole for the camera only! Ewes but I do love the Dynamic island <3

Opposite for me. Touch ID on iPad mini 6 (on/off button) works flawlessly for me every time. Set it up ONCE over a year ago and never disappoints.

I can't grasp why it is so important to get this feature under the screen when the button-based version works so very well. Why not just put the same, proven button on the iPhone rim? Perhaps the race to "thinner" is ramping up at Apple again and that thin iPad touchid button is too thick for upcoming generations of iPhone? Else, if iPhone is about as thin as it is going to go, the iPad touchid button would easily fit.

To be honest, I never had such issues back in the day on my iPhone 7, having said that, I can't fathom people wanting it back, I would never want to go back to Touch ID now that I've had access to Face ID.....ironically I was it's biggest critic, until I used it 🤣

So this means we have the same huge cutout dynamic island for a few more years, apple it’s 2023 it should be ready now tech really has been slow, I hate having a massive cut out

This is only a thing with a tiny minority of iPhone users and those influencers or competitors looking for something to knock Apple with, for me, skin tone recognition, over exposure, flares in night photography, big improvements to ultra & telephoto lenses, lighter Pro's & massively reducing the camera bump, are far more important than the notch / dynamic island, which are iconic! 😊

They've improved from terrible, to not as terrible!
The Notch & Dynamic Island are icons....love them!

If the under screen sensor is the Qualcomm sensor, it's actually more accurate than a capacitive reader. It uses high frequency sound to create and detect a more 3D version of your fingerprint's landscape.

I would have killed for just about any form of TouchID on my iPhone, but especially the under screen version, during the period everyone was requiring masks. FaceID was just a PITA then.

I've got an iPad Air and it works fine as well, however I would much prefer Face ID on all Apple devises, for me the whole under screen camera & Touch ID is not an issue, as I suspect for most iPhone users!

I've always had the same issue with Touch ID and Face ID never fails for me.It's far superior.I hope that Touch ID NEVER comes back to iPhones.I have the same issue with Touch ID on my MacBook Air but fortunately I can unlock it with my Apple Watch so I don't have to keep typing in the passcode like I had to with my last Touch ID iPhone.Removing Touch ID from iPhones is the best thing Apple ever did as far as I'm concerned.
