It's not really a feature. The adaptive notifications are the feature; dynamic island is the way they implement it to hide those two dead spots.
The island hides the FaceID array, just like the notch before it, the dynamic notification part is a feature which is integrated into the static island..
Put it this way: If they didn't have those two dead spots, they could do anything. But they do have those dead spots, so they do this particular thing.
Unless you want a phone with a big forehead, they could do anything except for having FaceID.
If a future iPhone doesn't have dead spots, it might still have some sort of always-on adaptive notifications (and that certainly is a feature), but it might be less prominent when in standby.
Yeah, once the FaceID array goes underscreen notifications will be different.

Still seems far away. Looks like Dynamic Island is here to stay for at least 3 years. I still believe Dynamic Island can offer so much more. It’s got potential!

But we thought the same thing with 3D Touch and that didn’t last longer than 3yrs as well

If this is a hardware trend at Apple it seriously needs to stop.

I don't want Face ID. It doesn't work with sunglasses, it doesn't work from weird angles, etc. (It's all for safety and security reasons, but it's nonetheless a headache).

None of these problems exist with Touch ID, which works reliably in all situations except rain and gloves. It can easily be incorporated under the display using existing technology.
Works pretty well with sunglasses but those really high-end UV blocking type glasses with polarized lens - of course it will not brcuae it blocks a lot of the light spectrum from reaching your eyes IF you have retina recognition enabled on FaceID.

Try disabling that while Enabling FaceID+ Mask detection it may resolve the issue you’re experiencing?

Yet for you to expect it to work at weird angles seems a bit entertaining as would you recognize someone else’s face poking at it at weird angles? ;) I mean come on man.

If you have “require attention for Face ID” turned on it may not work with sunglasses. It even says so in settings when you turn it on. Mine works fine with sunglasses or regular glasses or without glasses and it works from the side.

Touch ID or Face ID? Do you miss the Touch ID?

I still have it on my iPhone6 but after my upgrade to the 15 Pro, my 11 will become my work phone and the 6 will go away.

I will not miss it, although having the option for both I guess would be nice.

I remember how annoying it was to take my gloves off on the snowboard lift to access my phone. FaceID made that soooo much better.

I think this is why having both could be nice. There are definitely use cases where one is better than the other, but overall I personally liked TouchID better.

Asa motorcyclist, Touch ID is great because I don't need to remove my helmet if I pull over to do something quickly; removing a glove is much less involved. As someone who works with their hands FaceID is great because every so often I need to rescan my prints so my MBP will recognize them.

Having both would be ideal.

Some have suggested that they put a TouchID sensor on the back, perhaps integrating it into the Apple logo. I could go for that but i wouldn't want to give up any screen space for it.

Plus then it only is useful if you run your phone naked which is risky.

A few years back almost all iPhone cases had a cut out to show the Apple logo. It was purely to show people that they had an iPhone. It took me a while to find one that didn't. We could go back to that without too much trouble.

centering it on the back means that the sensor and supporting hardware would impact the battery.

Android's have had under screen touchID for awhile, so I expect it wouldn't take up any screen space on an iPhone.

i wonder why they don't just put touchID on the power button, like they've already done with some iPads. it would be good to have both
I always wondered about the quality of the on-button TouchID. The surface are of the button seemed too small to get enough data. But as a secondary method it would be good.

I serviced medical electronics for many years. There is no way that I would put anything as frivolous as a phone in my head, or any other part of my body.
I can certainly understand that, but I think it would help so much in doing things that are not so easy for me. It really doesn't need to be in my head though, but I'll take what I can get. :)
