I've been having more and more problems with FaceID on my 13 Pro. It used to work great but sometimes it won't trigger at all. Three tries and you're locked out, and have to use a password. The frequency it fails has forced me to pick a simpler password, lowering overall security.

I really wish they would add TouchID to the power button like on the iPads.
Retrain it. Only takes 20 seconds and has always worked for me with past iPhones.

The "iPhone 17 Pro" will be the first iPhone to feature under-panel Face ID technology, according to display analyst Ross Young.

In an updated roadmap shared on Twitter earlier today, Young claimed that the under-display Face ID technology will still be accompanied by a circular cutout for the front-facing camera. This implementation is expected to persist until 2027's "Pro" iPhone models, which will also move the camera under the display for a true "all screen" appearance.

The forecast differs from Young's initial roadmap shared in May 2022. Previously, he expected 2024's iPhone 16 Pro models to be the first to feature under-panel Face ID technology. Last month, Young said that this one-year delay was due to "sensor issues." The change means that the two display cutouts that currently compose the Dynamic Island will apparently persist unchanged through three successive "Pro" iPhone generations.

Young also said that the standard iPhone 17 models will adopt ProMotion, a feature that is currently exclusive to Apple's high-end devices.

If I wanted a hole punch I'd buy an Android 😏
Happy with the iconic notch/dynamic island, until under display camera tech good enough.....NO HORRIBLE HOLE PUNCH PLEASE

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I tried to scan my face with sunglasses on and iOS explicitly told me that Face ID does not work with sunglasses. With that being said, mine are polarized, and that's very likely to throw off the infrared beams by deflecting them.
Polarised is the problem, I had to get some non polarised ones, which I'm actually happier with...so a win win 😊
Problem is most cheap sun glasses are polarised.

This screen change would be a good time to include support for the Apple Pencil.

14 - worthwhile major update
15 - seems to be meh, as expected, unless you need zoom
16 - cameras should have been under the display
17 - was expecting foldable
And with the 15 Pro, you don’t even get the extra zoom (periscope lens) so unless USB-C and additional battery life really floats your boat, it’s probably worth skipping unless your current phone is really old.

17 -was expecting foldable
And you would probably be expecting a price of $2,000 if the 17 materialized to be foldable.

Well, there be a foldable AND rectangle 14pro (max) as well. Foldable will be much costly verses rectangle form factor.

Despite all the nays, Young’s track record is been pretty accurate. I for one am hanging onto my 12 pro max.

Dynamic island never drew me away from the notch. It looks very distracting especially for movies.

If this rumour holds true, the iPhone 17 pro max may be the next worthy update since the X.

I get less and less excited for new iPhones the worse and worse iOS gets
I've been feeling that way more and more just about tech in general lately. We have hit a sort of plateau where a lot of tech could just be as good as it needs to be, but to keep making money they just keep changing **** so it's never optimal. Instead everything is geared around getting you to pay for more subscriptions and having more and more advertisements pushed in your face all the time. A lot of tech I have been enthusiastic about in the past has been ruined by the never ending need to make more profit.

I don't want Face ID. It doesn't work with sunglasses, it doesn't work from weird angles, etc. (It's all for safety and security reasons, but it's nonetheless a headache).

None of these problems exist with Touch ID, which works reliably in all situations except rain and gloves. It can easily be incorporated under the display using existing technology.

Agree completely - and for me it often fails even if I'm not at a weird angle. Or if I'm in bright light. I hate FaceID.

My previous iPhone was a 6s, and I used it regularly at the grocery store, bakery, and casual restaurants; hold the phone up to the terminal with my finger on the home button. Done.

With the iPhone 13, Face ID is so much more of a hassle that I stopped using it for payments. Credit card with chip is much easier.

I think the part of my brain devoted to keeping track of device/software generations has atrophied.
I hear ya. I think increasingly many of these developments don’t move me too much. Nice to have but meh, also couldn’t care less.

Looking at it from a purely visual/design standpoint and ignoring the tech for a moment it's pretty wild that it'll take Apple until 2025 to put out a phone with a single camera cutout when Android phones had it since like 2019.
That’s the problem: it feels “wild” because the frame to look at the issue doesn’t really capture the picture. It’s not hard to create a single cutout for a camera. Design as a discipline isn’t just about looks though. Design incorporates problem solving and not just aesthetics.
