i am a fan of the new trackpad. the 3 finger swipe to the left that navigates back a page is fantastic. the two finger scrolling and clicking is also very convenient. as for the click to tap i think it just takes some getting used to. but there should not be any delay.

You have those gestures also on an early 08 MBP. And on the MBA. But they also have a button.

I highly recommend against doing such. I think that may void your warranty, when looked on a bigger scale, is worth much more than a few trackpad issues that you'd probably get used to after awhile.

It's one screw underneath the battery...c'mon folks. It's not going to void anything, it requires nothing but removing the battery to get to it.

If can turn a screw then you can do this.

Get a Delta screwdriver set and get in there!! It takes 20 minutes!! Be brave!!

I had the same problem with my trackpad, but I adjusted the screw and now it's fine. Tip: if you use "tap to click" don't set the screw so that the button no longer depresses....you'll need that button for logging in, and in various other situations where "tap" is unavailable.

Tapping instead of clicking seems to take just a little bit of time to register and sometimes doesn't.

If another finger is resting on the trackpad and you go try to tap-click it won't register. That may be the cause of it not registering, just something to be aware of.

I'd love to make my trackpad less firm, but the 17" UMBP's screw is behind the "touch it and die" battery. Bastards.

The clicking on the trackpad is a lot harder to use, I just use tap to click, and secondary two finger tap. It's awesome and I love it! Don't like reaching for the mouse nowadays :p

i dont find the pushing of the track pad to very hard. its just so damn loud, that's my problem with it.

Yea, I think that would be my main complaint. I've changed mice because of loud "clickers" before.

"tap to click" = silent. I might even give the tap-drag options a go, again (I tried it a long time ago and didn't like it).

Funny how Johnny Ive said that they spent lots of time balancing the firmness of the click as well as the loudness of the click.

Hardly..

when i have the separate button on my macbook air, i put my left thumb on the button and the right middle finger on the trackpad. with this new UMBP17" i use tap to click. first it's hard getting used to, but now i can't live without it.

but the china labour man didn't care about damn thing.

It's not a problem of poor manual work: it is very difficult to set up "correctly" the screw behind the battery. A very small "screwing" changes the pressure and the sound considerably. I think I spent hours for setting it up how I almost like: it is still too hard and too loud, but if I loosen it more, I end up clicking every time I use a "gesture".

A buttonless trackpad is just a bad idea (immo). Apple forgot there exists a "natural" form factor. This trackpad is a disaster and it is a pity considering how good the MBA trackpad is. On the MBA even the gestures are easier to do (and to detect for the software).

Just bought a new macbook pro 15' after owning a few pc laptops for a while. So far so good and I'm enjoying my somewhat costly purchase.

I can't however get used to the new trackpad. The button feels really heavy, clicking with the trackpad takes quite a lot of effort and makes a loud clicking noise. Tapping instead of clicking seems to take just a little bit of time to register and sometimes doesn't.

While I would never go back to my hp laptop and it's trackpad it seemed more responsive and the soft trackpad buttons more useful. I could click on both buttons to close a firefox tab for example.

Thanks !

I agree, the new trackpad and keyboard is crap. It's way too clunky (ka-chunk! ka-chunk!). Why invest so much technology in a track pad anyway? It's never going to be as fast as a mouse.

It won't wear in, that's the problem.

It's too firm.

find a kid, buy them ice cream and tell them to keep pushing on the button. It'll loosen eventually. :p

Honestly though, tap to click is the best. And that'll be way easier getting used to than clicking.

I heard someone mention getting a mighty mouse: my advice don't waste your $$. The logitechs are way more ergonomic for your hands and wrists.
