It's definitely not a place holder, multiple stores show quantities on order
The retail price is $999.99
iPhones, iPod Touches, Cinema Displays, Software aren't categorized under the mobile computing subclass.

It's probably some update to the entry level MacBook, nothing earth shattering. It will probably be announced tomorrow, on a Tuesday.

13" MacBook "Pro" as rumored? Or maybe new white MacBooks?

Another thing to point out, it seems to be in stock until november.
Clarksfield Mac notebooks were rumored for November…

:p

(I'm not getting my hopes up on anything.)

Except for the "mobile" part... Anyway, something that weights almost 9 pounds is NOT mobile (the 17" MBP weights already 6.6 pounds).

The Mac mini weights 3 pounds, so this new device would be like 3 times the Mac mini. Now make it about 10" x 13" x 4", it fits in the given dimensions.

It could be:
- a home server (combination of Airport Extreme + Time Capsule + AppleTV, with 2x1TB HDDs + Superdrive)
- a mini Xserve (one LV nehalem Xeon, up to 3x4GB RAM, 2 HDDs + ODD)
- a new headless desktop (one C2Q "S" series, up to 2x4GB RAM, 2 HDDs + ODD)

$999, said someone above?

idk if anyones noted this yet, but:

I went to UPCData.info, typed in the upc (885909337972), and it came back with:

Registered to :apple:, so bestbuy got that part right...

Nope, those model numbers are IDs Apple gives to their products.

Also, check this out:
Original iPhone: MA...LL/A
iPhone 3G: MB...LL/A
This product: MC...LL/A

Maybe it's a coincidence.

iPhone 3G Model Numbers: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937?locale=en_GB
Note US products end in LL

If my old mind serves me, the original iPhone was not called that when it came out. However, after 1.2.1? they changed the model number to what you said. Therefore, I think the first one deserves an *.

I want to say that last year we had all the same speculations. I think it turned out to be just a system placeholder. The dimensions did not mean anything. I could be wrong, but I thought I remember this being the case.

8.9lbs (FOR BOX WEIGHT) seems heavy, but considering the total box weight including power adaptor etc. etc. weighs aboutt 9lbs for 15.4 MBP, makes sense.

Last year, just before Feb 2008 update of MBP, there was a screenshot of Best Buy inventory just like this, However it was actually called 'Macbook' though.

Or maybe the 'Mobile computing device' is a smokescreen for MB/MBP?

If it's for the rumoured 13" MBP it's packing a lot of padding, as the box for my Blackbook is 15" x 15" x 3"...

I'm in the "oversized dimensions made up by Best Buy" camp.

I don't think this photo is supposed to be showing us a new Mac tablet...if the dimensions are infact true, at 8.9 pounds, this sounds more like the mini-tower everyone has been waiting for.

But then it wouldn't make sense putting it in the mobile computing category. I will check the MC240LL in the system and see if anything comes up at my local Best Buy. I won't be surprised if that entire photo was staged.

#2 I wouldn't trust any of the specs or information from Best Buy. BBY usually gets all the information regarding new products at the last minute. From what I've seen at my experience at BBY, they usually input the products into the system once they arrive in the store...so this information doesn't seem very credible to me.

Those dimensions and weight are for the unit in the box with all the accessories. I used to work at Best Buy and had to stare at that god forsaken screen everyday for 3 years. Best Buy did this with the Macbook Air as well however their dimensions were wrong from what I recall. This is most likely purely just speculation as I can't see Best Buy knowing anything about the new products being released from Apple yet.

I work in computers at Best Buy, and there is this inventory page, in addition to three inventory pages for Project Charlie" The supplier for that is AT&T. Also, if it were an iPhone, it wouldn't be listed under the computers department. Suffice it to say that that particular inventory page is definitely a computer

Good joke if this were middle school. However, the next line I have to disagree. when has Apple placed boxes in boxes?

That would go against their "green" campaign they have marketed thus far.

You've never seen how Apple ships things to stores ? The iPhone comes I think 12 to a "case". Each case holding boxes that have iPhones in them.

tomorrow

Something may still launch this week. Remember, on weeks with Monday as a holiday, launches move to Wednesdays. Doesn't mean it will happen, but nothing was going to be announced today, the day after a holiday. Tomorrow would be the day.

I'm betting next week the back to school promo will start on tuesday as it has in previous years on the first tuesday in june. One never knows for sure with Apple tho.

You guys do know that EVERY other item in this particular category at Best Buy is a tablet-like device, right? Just thought i oughta point that out since no one else has.
