Seriously? They're touting a saving in fuel when the weight of the flight bags is negligible compared to the masses of people that don't actually need to be flying in the first place?

So many of the posts in this thread only show how there should be an IQ test to be able to breed. People who can't do maths an eight year old could handle eg which is bigger 38, or 38x100,000 flights? Some say pilots are no more than train drivers - well clearly, these idiots never think much about anything outside of their own immediate needs ("gimme a muffin, dude"). Others just don't read the posts and reiterate the same bunch of crap.

Of course, I realise there are a number of teenagers on here who always post negatively against anything that is remotely mentioning anything from Apple in a positive light. I also realise there is a large dichotomy between the numbers of people in the US with high levels of education and those with no more than than a 14 year old - but really! Not all Windows users can be so thick, can they?

Pilots are clever people. Aeroplanes are designed by super-brainy people. The FAA is staffed by very nit-picky people paid by Washington to keep you safe by making sure pilots are trained and planes are well built and designed to be safe. Airlines are there to make money - get over it.

As for all the other options to save weight, you don't think they already do that? And you think it is OK to save weight on 90% of the things you discovered you can save weight on, and then say that a further improvement is not allowed "because Apple invented it"? Are you mad?

As for the person who wouldn't buy anything that had green on the box, that is plain unbelievable. If something does the job faster, better and cheaper, what does it matter if it is also more energy efficient? Don't you think saving fuel dollars is a good thing? Won't your stock prices and 401k go up if the companies make bigger profits? Oh, I forgot, Rush Limbaugh is giving out free fuel vouchers to airlines paid for out of Tea Party press appearances when they were talking down the credit rating of the USD in Congress... but no, not allowed to use them if it says 'green' on the box...

Don't get a job in business, the airline industry, or in anything that involves mulitplication. Actually, why not jump off a cliff with glued on feathers on because that's what makes birds fly, right? It's got nothing to do with weight...

You are getting voted down, but your comment rings true. Did they take into account the greenhouse gasses emitted to manufacture those 11,000 iPads?
What they should be stating is the break even time, because it certainly isn't a single year.

I would not be surprised if the break even (from a "green" standpoint) is in the several months.
 
these comments amuse me, it does not take an aviation expert to realize an iPad is much lighter than a 40 pound bag of papers meaning you will save fuel, the battery life is no problem, a 10 hour battery life can last for most flights and the plains do have electricity which powers your TVs and other things.
 
This had to give Ballmer major heartburn! Now he knows iPad is good for enterprise and mission-critical functions too! Nobody really needs Windoze tablets.
 
Since you can't run a laptop off USB it makes no sense -- OTOH you can plug in a cell phone charger into a normal plug. All modern computing/phone devices are 100V~240V & 50/60Hz -- and I'm sure they have heavy duty circuit breakers in case of a short.

Most laptops run on no more than 12v DC and most modern telephones run on 5v DC.
All iOS devices run on 5v DC. My HTC phone also run on 5v DC.
Therefore, no airline will install 120v AC outlets on the passenger seats, only in the bathrooms (for electric shavers). Some airlines do install special 12v DC outlets on passenger seats, good enough to power a MacBook Pro with the Airline adapter.

I don't know why people are making such a great deal out of powering 4 iPads for the crew.
 
I saw a documentary on American Airlines on CNBC. You'd be amazed at home much fuel/money they saved by doing stuff like this. Its just 38 pounds for this paper/ipad switch but when you add up all the little savings they have been doing (bringing less food/ice, replacing whatever with a lighter whatever), and then multiply that by all the flights, they save millions a year.

not true. Air Canada has 110VAC outlets in economy class on almost all their aircraft. USB power ports too.

Have you ever seen the cockpit of a commercial airplane? There are enough buttons to keep a 2 year old distracted for years.

I guess "someone" is in a rampage in pro of ignorance. FYI, that so called "toy" by you, supports something called Usage Policies, which serves to restrict usage of several features of an iOS device, such as installing non-approved applications or even restrict from browsing the Internet. Without this feature, I'm very sure the FAA would have not approved its use.

+1 then! I didn't know that. Considering that most electronic devices, specially those that have rechargeable batteries, run on low voltage (reason why these come with an AC Adapter).

All airlines should do the same. So this whole "issue" about iPad running out of batteries and planes crashing makes absolutely no sense.

Check http://seatguru.com - it shows the location and type of in-seat power receptacles on a plane-by-plane basis.

Mainly three options:
- 120v AC. At a minimum, US/Japan style blade sockets. Often polysexual sockets (US/UK/Aus/EU/CH/IT/...).
- Enphase - special DC outlets
- cigarette - US style 12v cigarette lighter sockets​

By the way, I seriously doubt that the failure of an Ipad will put any plane at risk. Nothing on the Ipad would be required to land the plane safely someplace.

Unless, of course, you're on a ScareBus and your pitot tubes ice over.
 
I understand what you mean but...

In a sense this is ultimately about consumption. It is about manuals, maps , checklists and other goodies.

In the end it is a great unintended professional use for the iPad. More so it is just a start when it comes to moving computing technology into new areas.

But remember, iPads are just for consuming content, not for real work!
 
Fly Qatar. According to my friend at Lufthansa they are uncontested when it comes to loading the planes with food.

The Qatar Airways' business class is like first class on some airlines. Had the pleasure a few times.
 
If you are seriously among those who refuse to board a plane because there might be an iPad or some other tablet being used in the cockpit, expect to pick up an Amtrak Multi-ride card, Europass card, or the like in the near future.

As for those saying the iPad will be a distraction:

An application called ForeFlight is currently available for immediate use. Not only are the approach plates available, but VFR/IFR charts, airport maps, and flight rules are as well. This provides for a less cluttered and more organized cockpit, which I believe to enable less fondling several paper charts and more attention can be given to flying the airplane.

People don't understand the power demands either

Many posters worry about the battery running out. This is a very invalid argument on two counts. First, we don't stare at an airport diagram, arrival profile or departure procedure for an airport for hours on end. The time I am actively looking at a chart or approach plate on even a 6 hour flight is probably less than 20 or 30 minutes. It is merely used for studying an airport or procedure in advance of actually executing the profile with the airplane.
Similarly, if I need to look up technical data to answer a question I have about how the airplane is, or should be operating, it is only minutes to find the reference and answer the operational question I had.

2nd, and most importantly. Every pilot has one of these. Both Federal and international regulations limit ANY pilot from occupying a control position on an aircraft for more than 8 hours a day. On longer flights, we have spare pilots on board that get rotated in to the cockpit so that no pilot exceeds that limit. That is simply the regulation. So EVEN if a pilot actively left an iPad on for his entire time at the controls while flying, it could not exceed 8 hours, well under the battery life of the iPad. When a relief pilot comes up on a long international flight, the relief pilot is coming to the cockpit with his own iPad and its subsequent 8 hour battery life.

Bottom line, battery life is ABSOLUTELY not an issue, from both a practical sense and a pilot duty-limit regulatory sense. So many posters have absolutely no clue what they are talking about, yet state their opinions as "fact".
