I go out of my way to go to places with Apple Pay. Like the Chevron 10 mins from my house vs 3, the Vallarta 15+ mins from my house vs Staters (2 mins), etc... It's convenient and fun.
Well done sir, you have won the award for most non sensical ridiculous post of the year!! A) you go out of your way to shops further afield to accept Apple pay, but then say it's convenient!! Cos using a bank card is soooooo much of a pain in the ass!! , but the cherry on top... IT'S FUN!! Wtf!! I don't even know what to say about that..

They should allow both...
Yeah, why not? They sell Pepsi AND Coke. They offer Bic and Papermate. You can buy meat frozen or refrigerated. They sell just about everything "regular" and "sugar free". Why not this too?

Look out superior people that *don't shop at Walmart*!

That condescension looks good on you. Really.
Oh Puh-lease.

I do shop at Wal-Mart, and I pay with Amex. Every time. Have since they started this b.s.
Amex has the highest fee for merchants.
That's kind of funny.:)

^This. Sadly, it's still chip and sign here in the Status, although the signature requirement was removed by VISA, MC, and AMEX. I absolutely prefer contactless but I wish a 'pin' requirement was also added to credit transactions.
Worse thatn Chip and Sign, are the retailers who still make me sign even after using Apple Pay. I always give the cashier a hard time when that happens.
"You need to sign, sir."
Feigning dramatic incredulousness, I reply, "Wait, what? I just gave my fingerprint!"
"It still needs your signature sir."
"Well, at least it didn't require a urine sample."

There's a 100% chance that all of the folks in this thread who said "good I'll never shop there anyways" have definitely shopped at a walmart before.
You're probably right about that. This is all because there is no more subtlety allowed in our society.

So my reason for not shopping at Walmart is this: Even if you go at 2 am, it always takes at least 45 minutes for me to get thru the line at the cash register. I do go to Walmart, but maybe only about once every other month when they have something that nobody else has and I've decided that my purchase would be worth the added 45 minutes. I won't go through the self-check line either, because there are many accounts of Walmart accusing people of shoplifting when in the self-check line. The insidious thing is that they do it by having a law firm send you a letter, demanding a payment to make it all go away. You have no way to defend yourself without getting your own attorney. So I must always build in the 45 minute wait to go through a human-operated cash register line.

And after all that, about half of those visits end with me not purchasing the item anyway, because the line is more than 10 deep. That's when I order from Amazon and get it the same day or the next day.

Yeah I notice a lot of snobbery going on here.

I guess if you make 6 figure salary you can avoid shopping at Walmart. Must be nice.

I'm a teacher so I get teacher pay. I live overseas but when I'm back home in the states, I buy all my groceries and classroom supplies from Walmart.
Exactly. Also there are some good stuff to buy from there...so i don’t know why all the hate. I rather save money..not pay more.

Walmart does not make the world a better place. It facilitates unhealthy buying and unhealthy eating. Yes, Walmart is not shoving unhealthy food down people's throats, but they are basically giving it away for free at their low costs. The only people that truly benefit from this enterprise are the owners.
Funny, because I'm a healthy eater and have no problem shopping at Wal-Mart each week for groceries. And when did we stop having self-dignity and control of our own bodies? Eating healthy can also be expensive, and even more so if you buy organic. That's not a luxury that most families have.

It's not condescension. It's making a personal choice to not financially support a retailer that wipes out small businesses in every town that they move into. Here in Canada, that means profits being shipped over the border into the US. How is that good for our communities, exactly?

You act as if Walmart only sells unhealthy food. You can buy junk food at any other supermarket. Whether it's low or high end.

Walmart is like any grocery store. It has healthy and unhealthy food. I eat a healthy plant based diet and I'm able to buy all of my plant based foods at Wal mart.

Why is “no plans” in quotes. It’s like you mean something other than you have no plans to patronize Wal-Mart. Almost like you are being sarcastic in your “no plans” - like you have every intention to continue to patronize Wal-Mart.

Hey, by all means... avoid the great deals because you can’t pay with your phone.

Congratulations on your elevation to the upper end of the caste system. Please tell the Hiltons I said “hello”.

I was parodying the article title which does the exact same thing with quotes. Woosh.

Thanks for letting me know that you'll be partaking in much better deals than me! Sounds great!

Hate going to WM - despise it, but still want cheaper stuff sometimes - gimme a fast lane with AP and I'd be in and out.

But forget about dam WM - I want it at my gas pump...

Lol glad someone noticed that. :). Thank you. Very few places in the high desert accept Apple Pay. :(.

Was this a.sarcastic post? Wow, it absolutely completely went over my head

Half and half. It’s my bad. Apple Pay is so rare up here I have to go really far out of my way to use it. Closer to Los Angeles? It’s frigging everywhere. Here in the desert some restaurants have it but it’s always broken (EPL) and since few use it they never fix it. For me to use Apple Pay it’s so rare I have to go way out of my way to use it. Hence the fun statement. I should have added a :p my bad. I liked your response. :)

Same. One gas station has it here but it still requires a zip code and is this a debit question making it not a lot faster. :/ They need to fix this then it would be great.

Depends right ? Supercenter walmarts have healthy food and a full grocery store. The smaller Walmart’s usually just have a lot of bad junk food.

How is it more complicated then using a physical card?

You have to get your phone out and authenticate, versus just using your credit card. On top of that, you have to figure out if a merchant actually TAKES Apple Pay, whereas virtually everyone takes VISA except for a few small local shops that are still flying under the radar underreporting income and haven't been busted by the IRA yet. It's an unnecessarily complicated and roundabout way of paying for something.

Getting your phone out, and activating Apple Pay by double tapping either the home button on older phones, or the side button on the X, or the side button on your Apple Watch definitely takes less time to do that pulling out your wallet, inserting your card, waiting 5 or 10 seconds for it to read the chip in your card. Authentication with Apple Pay is instant.

It sounds to me like you’ve never actually used Apple Pay...

I've never had an iPhone that supported it, and I have no desire to ever use it. It's more complicated than just using my credit card like a normal person. I'm not sure what you're talking about, but getting and using my credit card is extremely simple and straightforward, unlike using a phone to make a payment, which is a silly kludge. I have Samsung Pay disabled on my current phone, it's another stupid attempt at phone-based payment.

When it works, it's nice. Subway? Come to checkout, hold phone over credit card machine, provide thumb print to phone when it asks (ApplePay) (don't even have to unlock phone), bam done in 2 seconds. Receipt prints out, I walk away with subs. Loves Gas stations on way to New Orleans from California and back... WOW just perfect.

When it isn't done nicely... : Chevron gas pumps still ask for zip code and "Is this a debit card?" with Apple Pay. Some places still require a physical signature. El Pollo Loco - it's almost guaranteed it will fail and you have to get out your CC anyway (at least here in the high desert).

Oh yeah, Whole Foods (at least in Pasadena) does it right too.

When done right, it's super fast and convenient - a bit easier than sliding out your chip CC on a $20 purchase.

There's no purpose to Apple Pay. It's a redundant and kludgy way to do something that we already had a way of doing, i.e. a credit card. I use my CC on $1 purchases. I use it for basically everything. It's not a big deal to use it. I use it for everything except gas, as my gas station has their own app with a 10 cent per gallon discount.

I just moved - so I signed up for fuelrewards? thing with Shell. I get 5-10 cents off a gallon but now I have to type in my phone number every time I go to the pump. (That and the Shell near my new place doesn't have Apple Pay).

I stopped carrying cash because I got asked for $ so often it was just easier to say No cuz I don't have cash. That was the biggest motivator for me to use a CC all the time.

I like Apple Pay when it works, makes the whole process a big faster. I find the whole process of swiping a card, signing a receipt, etc... to be pretty inconvenient. I like the idea of just taking my phone places. I have a Sena wallet case on my phone with 2 slots (ID and CC). I've been leaving my wallet at home / work when I go out.

Here we have Cumberland Farms, which is awesome, as they use their app and give you 10 cents off. I hate the stations that give 10 cents off for cash, since it just clogs the whole station up, as everyone has to go inside twice.

I won't go anywhere without cash. There are still occasional merchants who won't take credit cards. I just ignore beggars and keep walking. I have a nice, thick wallet with plenty of various cards and IDs and such in it.

Few merchants require a signature anymore, and they certainly aren't the ones who support Apple Pay.

This won’t have the outcome you’re expecting. Walmart will just raise the price a penny on 500 items and that’ll make up for the extra cost of business. But congrats to you for failing to think it through fully.

I’ve already started boycotting Walmart as much as I can because I like using Apple Pay. It’s so much easier and faster than getting out a credit card and chip reader, check out at Walmart is now a pain.

Well I still buy from Walmart on occasion, but I only do so with small cash purchases. Their prices are hard to beat. But yes, the one time my credit card was fraudulently billed was right after I had used it at a Walmart. So only use cash at Walmart now. Never a credit or debit card. Without ApplePay, Walmart payment is just insecure.

Costco is good if I had to buy in bulk. But hey, I'm not a parent with 7 kids, so bulk shopping is not for me.

This is why I stopped going to Target. Once they got those automatic checkout machines they rarely have 2+ human checkout lines and they usually go back 10+ people. Since I like beer and my wife likes Stella Rosa I can't use those automatic checkout machines. This has had more of an effect on me not shopping at Target.

Using Apple Pay at Costco has been a blast. It's a little busier but EVERY lane is manned by 1-2-3 employees and you usually get through there really quick. But yeah like @Solomani it's just my wife and I so we only go once or twice a month. Our local Sprouts has Apple Pay but it's a little pricey.
